Though I did expect a complete mess.

People the night before were saying debating is her strength as she's done a lot of it as a governor. People were aiming the bar so low that just making articulate responses would win her points. Maybe she's smarter than we think!!!!! 10/2/2008 10:53:44 PM |

Actually Kennedy cheated (on more then his wife). Historians have alleged that Kennedy benefited from vote fraud, especially in Texas and Illinois, and that Nixon actually won the national popular vote despite the fact that Republicans tried and failed to overturn the results in both these states at the time--as well as in nine other states. These two states are important because if Nixon had carried both, he would have won the election in the electoral college.10/3/2008 8:21:00 AM |

they both did what they needed to do. she danced around a lot of the questions that she didn't have strong answers for, but that is what good debaters do. they focus on their strengths, and try to steer the conversation in that direction. i still don't feel comfortable with her leading the country because she clearly doesn't have a strong enough knowledge of the issues, but I was impressed overall with her delivery. I do think she was a little hokie and was trying too hard to be the "every man", and her continual use of the word "nucular" really started to bother me toward the end.
All in all, good debate. WAY better than the first Presidential debate.

The Kennedy administration did nothing to help the people of the United States at all. In fairness, he only served a little under three years, so he could not have been too effective in the first place.
But, his domestic policy was all talk and no action, and his foreign policy was awful by any estimation.
Nixon, on the other hand, while remembered solely for Watergate (and he does deserve that), was arguably one of the best Presidents in history, and his foreign policy was masterful. 10/5/2008 7:32:23 PM |

I think his handling of the Cuban Missile Crisis negates that last part.10/5/2008 7:50:48 PM |
mattinthehat All American 573 Posts user info edit post |
^ Kennedy did act decisively during the Cuban Missile Crisis (his actions coming from the script of Robert McNamara, his Sec. of Defense), which saved a lot of lives.
But, the Cuban Missile Crisis was encouraged by his complete blundering of the Bay of Pigs fiasco. It was this demonstrated lack of ability that emboldened the Russians to move forward with their armament mission.
And, the fact that Kennedy was responsible for hastening the United States' involvement in the Vietnam War doesn't help the cause, either.
