She's definitely fly.
I don't keep up with it that much...but I feel like she bulked up a lot this year. I don't remember her being as "thick" (of course it's all muscle) the last two years...which is also why she probably wasn't able to win. Maybe that added weight/muscle finally pushed her over the top. 8/4/2014 4:05:49 PM |

A new crossfit gym is opening up here in downtown Winston this month, http://www.toptiercrossfit.com/
Is $175/month for a 12 month commitment the norm??? How often per week is it recommended you attend a class? Just curious. 8/4/2014 4:25:52 PM |

^^that seems pretty pricey, especially for your area. my gym ends up being like $160/mo (and that includes taxes, which caught me by surprise when they tacked that on) with a "6 mo committment" (which really means nothing except for I'm set up for auto-pay). Especially for a brand new gym. I would also be hesitant to sign any kind of contract until you see what kind of programming they use. 8/4/2014 9:30:35 PM |

^^Depends on what your level of experience with the Olympic lifting movements. I started at Crossfit RDU (off 70), and had never really done deadlifts, C&Js or snatches properly. They did a great job of working with me to work on my form before I really started moving any kind of heavy weight. Unfortunately, I had to leave the gym because it is just to far from where I work and live, so I couldn't tell you who any of the new coaches are. But Steve (the owner) and Dave are still there, and they are great. You couldn't ask for better coaches. When I went there, my monthly membership was $130. You can probably get one now for $150.
If you are just looking for the cheapest gym, the crossfit main page has a list of all affiliates and a link to their websites. 3/2/2015 10:54:56 PM |

$150 month isnt all that terrible for something that's going to change your life.
You'll be spending less on junk food/beer/etc. because crossfit. You'll be spending less on entertainment/movies because you spend all your time at the gym, talking and hanging with other crossfitters, or talking about crossfit on facebook.
However: You'll be spending more on minimalist looking shoes because crossfit. You'll be spending more on workout gear because you gotta look fly for crossfit.
It's likely a wash. 6/10/2015 7:00:15 AM |

And I take it you have changed your stance since the previous page:
Quote : | ""Crossfit is not for health. It's competitive fitness. When you compete, you voluntarily accept to sacrifice a modicum of health for performance."
I don't make that sacrifice, and nobody at ANY of the boxes Ive been to accept it either. In fact, that is why many people join a crossfit gym. There is always ample attention given to warming up/ stretching, and oversight for proper technique and form. No other gym provides this.
Obviously this doesn't fit the narrative you are trying to sell your clients, which is disingenuous and really not even necessary." |
Nope, you wouldn't accept that kind of sacrifice...well...unless it is a movement that has a high rate of Achilles tears with no real added benefit over step down variants.
Yeah, see this is why CrossFit gets a bad name.

When we do box jumps it is explicitly instructed that we step down.
I love my gym 6/11/2015 12:19:50 AM |
ElGimpy All American 3111 Posts user info edit post |
I've been doing Crossfit for around 5 or 6 years. Never once have I been told the only option for doing box jumps is to rebound. I have never seen that explicitly come up in a workout either. Anytime we do boxjumps the instructions given are, "Stepping down is the safest and least tiring way to do these. If you want to do them quickly while risking injury to your achilles, feel free to rebound".
It's dangerous to let certain pitchers throw more than 120 pitches in a game, but there's no rule against it. It's dangerous for hockey players to check, but clearly that's part of the game. Just about everything in pro football can be dangerous, the majority of which is just part of the game.
To perform at an elite level sometimes things are done not in the safest way possible. No one on this page is arguing that Crossfit can't be dangerous when done certain ways, but in my experience no one's ever pushed me to do something that would cause injury. 6/11/2015 9:01:45 AM |
skywalkr All American 6788 Posts user info edit post |
I would certainly hope that if you are just working out they would tell you that you should step down. My problem is that all it would take is HQ saying rebounding isn't allowed in competitions anymore and presto, you just reduced the risk of a pretty awful injury with no real changes to anything. It isn't like rebounding tests anything special, sure you can go a little faster but if everyone is doing step downs then it doesn't matter. 6/11/2015 10:08:33 AM |
ElGimpy All American 3111 Posts user info edit post |
Rebounding requires more skill and endurance than step downs.
Should MLB disallow running out ground balls because there's a higher potential for pulling a hamstring? If no one's allowed to run out a routine ground ball than it's fair isn't it?

Except rebounding box jumps are not a critical part of crossfit. You could completely eliminate box jumps and replace it with something else that works the legs and tests endurance with zero change to the competition or workout other than a different exercise. There are plenty of things to choose from that are far less risky. Or you could just eliminate the risky part of it and again you have no real change to the workout.
I'm amazed that this even needs to be discussed, especially after one of the biggest names in the sport just had a complete Achilles tear from this exact thing. 6/11/2015 12:13:26 PM |
ElGimpy All American 3111 Posts user info edit post |
To completely eliminate something like that from a sport I'd want to see proof that it's statistically more injury prone than every single other thing you're not eliminating. How many people have hurt their shoulders doing kipping or butterfly pullups? What about muscle up injury risk (that's how I hurt myself years ago)? Haven't there been some pretty serious OLY lift accidents? 6/11/2015 12:17:56 PM |
skywalkr All American 6788 Posts user info edit post |
I mean it is pretty damn well known that rebounding puts an awful lot of stress on the Achilles' tendon. All you have to do to remove this risk is program step downs. Such a simple change can pretty much eliminate the risk of that injury but it's use is still being defended because there are other things that are risky too? Really? 6/11/2015 12:30:37 PM |
ElGimpy All American 3111 Posts user info edit post |
From my understanding of Crossfit injuries kipping pullups cause a lot more than rebounding box jumps. They do nothing but prove you can do kipping pullups and test endurance. I don't do them any more, but I have no need in my life to argue that Crossfit should get rid of them 6/11/2015 12:37:02 PM |
skywalkr All American 6788 Posts user info edit post |
Also, I don't think it is really that crazy to suggest your shouldn't do kipping pull-ups until you are strong enough to use proper form which helps reduce the risk of injury. As well, I don't think it is crazy to suggest things like heavy Olympic lifts shouldn't be done in a metcon or when heavily fatigued. They should also probably implement things like you can't press out a snatch attempt to make those things safer.
You aren't going to remove all risk, no one is saying that but there are some pretty basic, common sense approaches that can be taken that drastically reduce those risks yet don't compromise anything. 6/11/2015 12:40:13 PM |
ElGimpy All American 3111 Posts user info edit post |
At this point we're just arguing an active vs. laissez faire attitude towards decreasing risk in the sport as a whole. You change all those things you mentioned and the sport is drastically different. I stopped doing butterfly and kipping pullups a couple years ago and that really changes a lot of the workouts for me.
If you view Crossfit as their motto of, "The fittest athlete" competition, than yeah, I agree with you, but then a lot of things should be changed. But I've never really viewed it that way and don't believe that to be the case. They have a specific sport they've created and it is what it is, I don't see a vast need to make those changes just to make it safer. Someone else can create that sport and see if it competes. 6/11/2015 12:51:54 PM |
skywalkr All American 6788 Posts user info edit post |
You are the one that brought up those things, I simply provided my opinion on how to make them safer (which I still don't think really changes the sport, there is zero good reason to allow someone to press out a snatch). 6/11/2015 1:00:40 PM |

I stopped Cfit a few years ago after changing jobs and not having time to attend enough classes to make it worthwhile. Still miss the camaraderie. But, I made the decision on my own while there to step down on box jumps and to scale other workouts bc I'm a rational individual who is intelligent enough to know my own limits. I was also in my late 20's/early 30's when I was doing Cfit and knew I wasn't going to compete in the Games so didn't worry too much about certain lifts/WOD's. That can't be said for everyone who engages in Cfit.
I saw one girl obtain a gnarly gash in her shin that required stitches from failing on a box jump and one guy tore a pectoral but I wasn't actually there to see that one. Otherwise, my particular gym was fairly accident/injury free from what I can recall. 6/11/2015 1:14:55 PM |

Not catching a snatch with your arms completely locked out at the bottom of the lift and pressing the weight up until your arms are locked. Not allowed in Olympic lifting for a reason. 6/11/2015 8:50:25 PM |
acraw All American 9257 Posts user info edit post |
Elbows lock out @ 2:40. Maybe you're trying to describe hyperextension of the elbow. I find most people who keep the weight overhead with hyperextension have poor "active shoulders". I've seen people pull the bar waaay back. But not sure if this is what you're describing. The video below is the catch of the snatch.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6s8z3CVB0w 6/11/2015 11:20:54 PM |
skywalkr All American 6788 Posts user info edit post |
What I am talking about is like you are doing an overhead press with the weight. Catch the bar with arms bent and as you stand up you press the weight all the way to lockout instead of catching it overhead and locked out in the bottom position and then standing up with the weight. Hope that makes more sense.
It isn't a big deal with light weight but as you approach maximal weight it can get quite dangerous
You can see a few examples in the video below. Not all of them by any means but you will probably recognize it when you see it.

lol because Castro decided to put a big compound lift at the end of the day, after 2 events that was shoulder -heavy already. 6/14/2015 11:13:05 PM |
skywalkr All American 6788 Posts user info edit post |
I'm not sure I follow your point because there were shoulder heavy workouts prior it is ok to use bad form that could seriously injure someone?
There are two ways you could remove the issue in the first place, don't program a near maximal complex lift after you have already heavily taxed a critical muscle group or require good form. I know this is all just CRAZZZZY and all but I don't think that takes away from the sport or competition in the slightest yet it improves the safety.
Also, snatches are allowed to be pressed out regardless so just because the example I showed you was after some heavy shoulder exercises does nothing to take away from the fact that it unnecessarily increases the risk. 6/15/2015 7:25:18 AM |
