I will say that OLN's HD feed seemed better than NBC, which is odd. I wish NBC had put a camera in the RBC Center like OLN did with Rexall. 6/11/2006 9:57:20 AM |

Maybe I'm just an "ignorant southerner" (who has been watching hockey for about 15 years now), but I could have sworn that in order to play a puck, you needed to have your stick on or near the ice. Ryan Smyth's stick was up, and his hands/arms were planted on the crossbar, making it pretty darn tough to legally play the puck.
But what would I know. I'm just a dumb southern hick who is too simple to understand hockey.6/11/2006 11:17:24 AM |

The problem (which I thought was glaring) and noticed it immediately in the NBC HD broadcast vs the OLN HD (INHD) is definitely the camera zoom.
If you notice NBC keeps swinging the camera in and out of zoom and it's so much harder to follow the puck when its shifting across the blue line. If it stays in a zone near the goal long enough the camera will zoom in and you dont notice, but any shift and it swings out.
Looks terrible and way too herky jerky. 6/11/2006 2:50:24 PM |

Very true. Commie and Wesley in particular don't seem to throw it to the front of the net enough. Edmonton won last night by scoring two "ugly" goals. We need to do the same in Gm 4. Let's just throw 'em to the front of the net and hammer away at the rebounds. 6/11/2006 7:27:58 PM |

by the way, i finally found some canes stuff here in charlotte, at value city. its actually the same place i found my canes jacket at several years ago. the t-shirt is kinda lame, but it was only 5 bucks. it says, "Losing...One Sign You Aren't a Hurricanes Fan". kinda funny since they were so bad the last couple years.

Quote : | "frankie's the only one who will shoot in a circumstance that's not the most beautiful setup ever" |
yeah, he's definitely the best point defender for the pp. is it just me, or does anyone else get nervous as shit with staal on the point? whenever there is a bouncing puck coming out he never plays the position on the opponent to try to contain the puck, he just keeps moving forward and trys to swat the puck back in.
Quote : | "the officials were bad, not biased" |
that is correct. there was no consistency in the officiating. some touchy things were called, like kevyn adams "hook" that led to the 5 on 3. some big things were missed, like aaron ward getting cross-checked right in front of the net (like none of the officials saw that since the puck was right there). there were also some things for the oilers, i just can't remember specifics.
bottom line is the 'canes lost because they failed to establish and offensive rhythm and puck control for the first 40. but to only lose by 1 on a lucky garbage goal makes it seem that if the canes can play solid for 60 minutes, they should be able to get the series lead. lets hope that they find their groove quickly and stay in it for the rest of this series.6/12/2006 12:57:01 AM |

That's a neat debating trick.
And ftr, I think we played like crap and deserved to lose. But, I thought the goal was questionable because he skated straight into the crease at the same time as the puck. I believe the commentators even said, during a replay, that he entered the crease at the same time as the puck. That's obviously not a rebound, and in my mind, it shouldn't constitute a 'loose puck' if it's still being played by the skater. I know that it's an extremely difficult call to make, but it seems like from what I've seen in watching hockey thus far, officials tend to be very protective of the goaltenders. But all that being said, I do recognize the fact that I am by no means a hockey expert, and will yield to the wisdom of such a person providing expertise without being a troll, a douche, or some combination of the two.
Could they have even called a penalty on the replay?6/12/2006 8:33:59 AM |

^^^^ The crease rule was never a penalty in the first place, and an interference call is unreviewable. On top of that, the crease rule was indeed abolished a number of years ago.
You're right when you say that officials protect goaltenders, but it's for good reason. Goaltenders where no protection against bodily contact, particularly on the head. The goal mask is made to protect against pucks, but it's actually very poor at protecting against large masses. On top of that, there is literally no padding on the back of the goaltender aside from a light spine plate and elbow caps, and goaltenders are often sitting ducks for injury, as seen by the relatively benign-looking hits that led to knee injuries in Roloson and Garth Snow. 6/12/2006 10:20:47 AM |
