so i didn't even realize that "fernando" was on this j.lew record until i listened in the car...i fucking love that song, and finally it's a recording that i can use (they played it on conan and i've had it forever, but the levels aren't good at all)

"carpetbagger" is fucking great, as is "tryin' my best"

and that campesinos came out of nowhere, i'll listen tomorrow

i like the older TVOTR better. its was kinda more hypnotic and smooth. I used to always listen to it while working on cars. This one is a touch more upbeat and energetic and it kinda ruins it.

^blasphemy.....yea 'return to cookie mountain' was good and 'desperate youth blood thirsty babes' is an amazing debut album but this is probably one of the better albums of the decade. they pulled off what radiohead tried to do with 'in rainbows' but failed at.

Eh i know its all personal opinions, but, while that tv on the radio album is somewhat enjoyable for me, its also rather forgettable for me. we'll see in time, but it doesnt seem like something I will come back to much farther down the line.

EDIT: Ill also note that sometimes it takes awhile for certain albums to really root themselves with me

^^ I think Radiohead did exactly what they wanted on IR. Totally different musical styles anyways. I think this is the album Coldplay wishes they could make.

new campesinos isn't good...three decent songs tops on an album of ten.

i realize they can't do the whole "flying by the seat of our pants" act any more, and the production reflects that, but on most of these songs they're trying to straddle the snarkiness of their first record and traditional indie rock emotional sincerity and it comes off as super-forced.

meh.

i'd say half of it is bad, a third is decent, and there are two or three great songs

but i might be biased because i've loved "fernando" and "jack killed mom" since they first showed up two years ago

might have missed it, but did anyone pick up Chris Walla's solo CD at the beginning of the year? I just now heard about it, debating on whether it will be worth picking up.

also i just picked up travis morrison's "all y'all" super late (came out last year i think). its decent, but i think i probably like it more from the nostalgia of his voice associated with the dismemberment plan than anything else. its still pretty fun though.

and also, Im on the lookout for Copeland leaks of "You Are My Sunshine" and Lovedrug leaks of "the sucker punch show" both are scheduled for mid to late october releases and im hoping for some good things from both.

so I commented in 2k7 that i really enjoyed Protest the Hero and The Human Abstract's first cds. Both have 2nd cds now, though I'm having mixed feelings.

Protest the Hero - Fortress is probably more sophisticated musically than Kezia, but just doesn't flow as well in my head. Still a great album.

The Human Abstract - Midheaven just came out and is relatively differnet than Nocturne. Many of the song's are a smidge more mellow and it is a bit all over the place. It took me a listen or two to get used to, but the first half of the CD is really solid. Guitar work is a little more diverse than nocturne, but not as "rockin" for me.

so yesterday I stated that I enjoyed Travis Morrison's latest album (vocalist, guitarist from the dismemberment plan). In keeping with that, I kind of checked up on what the other guys were doing. I knew that their bass player had been in Maritime for awhile with some ex Promise Ring guys and I enjoyed one of their discs a good bit.

But I ran across another band that the bass player and the plan's drummer were in in DC called "Statehood". They had a record come out 9 months ago or so called "Lies and Rhetoric" that im rocking here at work and I really enjoy it. Eric Axelson is one of my favorite rock bass players in recent years and his lines stand out already in just my first listen through. Easley's drums carry that familiar, fun groove too. I also love the production. It has the unmistakable DC post-hardcore tinge to it that I love so much.

People might have already talked about this, but I tend to fall behind, even as much as I try to keep up with stuff these days.

oh and PS, I listened to the Travis Morrison disc again too this morning when I first came into work and I like its better 2nd listen through, always a good sign

they are GREAT live if you ever get to see them. first time I saw them was 4 years ago at the brewery. there was pretty much no one there (about 25 people, 10 of them in my group of friends) and they played a great set regardless.

This album is pretty good so far but I havent gotten to listen a lot yet. My favorite of theirs is their first one "Pretend You're Alive" but I also have "Everything Starts Where It Ends" and it is good too. I only have one of their 5 EPs though, Ive slacked on keeping up with those. But Id recommend picking up "Pretend You're Alive" for sure.
