I picked it up before at 5.90 and sold at 7.05 then it took off to 8.50 I waited till it dipped today to pick it up at 6.50. Chart hasnt shown any downtrend yet really and the latest target prices have been from 9-10 so I am gonna try to ride it to 10+ this time unless I see it start tending down.

I must say I feel sorta proud to see the market down 350+ points today and actually somehow posted a gain.

this thread had some potential initially, but now it's full of day traders wasting money on fees and on overpriced, speculative stocks

personally i like to follow the Buffett investing method:

1) find a highly valued company with a niche and little competition
2) check for positive, growing cash flow over the last 5+ years
3) buy said company at a steep discount
4) hold
5) $profit

"Price is what you pay, value is what you get."
-Warren Buffett

Ok here is one I will throw in that I am long on, CPST (Capstone Turbine) they make microturbines for industrial, commercial, and utility use. They have around 80% market share and are bringing on new lines of product to broaden their uses. The chart has a nice steady uptrend and they are starting to get some coverage, buy ratings, and I have seen targets of $6 a share (trading at $4 now). On a small dip right now if it dips a bit more I will probably increase my position.

Well, I like playing fantasy football with my money. I have money in my 401k that I leave alone...

Anyway, I was looking at my tickers today...I thought it was broken because it was so inactive.

we're all seeking that 'alpha'. some folks do it intraday, some over weeks, months, years, etc..

the important thing is that we keep these threads constructive -- we've been at it since 2006. lets keep it full of ideas and discussions of going ons in the market. coming here to flame people and simply to brag is not what this should be about. i hope i've kept my bragging to a minimum in the past -- i know the market has humbled me enough times to keep me from boasting too much.

Fair enough...I've been sticking with an egineering firm called Kellog Brown and Root (KBR). They just bought out a company I've been working with for the last 6 months, and the company they bought was big time. Also, they have lots of contractors working in Iraq right now...it could be more volatile come election time...

Anyway, anybody had any success lately?

In the absence of a taxpayer-funded bailout, citi could go to zero.

More likely there will be a combination of continued "raising capital" operations (selling huge chunks of Preferred Shares to Soverign Wealth Funds) followed by a Fed-orchestrated merger a la Bear Stearns.

Citi not only has tons of toxic mortgage crud, but rising defaults in its former cash-cow credit card and auto financing operations.

According to chartist Louise Yamada in a Barrons article this weekend,Citi could go as low 10$ Fifth third could drop another 50% & Merrill is headed to $20 Article is on pg.23 "why the rout in financials isn't over".

And the closing paragraph:

"In short, it's no time to be banking on the banks. As Don Coxe, global
portfolio strategist at Canada's BMO Capital Markets, put it recently:
"It looks as if all big banks on Wall Street are going to be places
where not only would you not want to own their stocks but not even have
deposits with them." Lock up the vaults, folks."

Start of a new month. Let's see how the ole 401K is doing.

Personal Rate of Return from 01/01/2008 to 06/30/2008 is -10.7%

At least I'm beating the indices.

I think banks have almost bottomed out (writedowns have peaked)...note the good news for UBS and DB today (both up 5% in Europe)

I think we're in for an oversold bounce, but you're high if you think the banks are done writing their toxic trash down. Tread with caution.

HKGK - July 55 calls. HK got upgraded yet again with a new target price of $60 from Friedman Billings I believe. Things are looking good for this company.

Quote :
"Friedman, Billings, Ramsey & Co. raised its price target on shares of Petrohawk Energy Corp. Wednesday to $60 from $45, saying it now values Petrohawk's 275,000 net acres in the Haynesville shale at $7.4 billion based on a recent transaction.
Late Tuesday, Plains Exploration agreed to pay Chesapeake Energy an implied $25,600 per acre, or $1.65 billion in cash and $1.3 billion in present value of future costs assumed, for 110,000 acres in the Haynesville shale.

Friedman Billings reiterated its outperform rating on shares of Petrohawk, noting that the stock is up 142% in three months, but saying that its valuation is still not reflective of its inherent value of its assets if recent test wells and the Chesapeake/Plains valuation is extrapolated to Petrohawk's acreage position.

The firm estimates 2008 earnings for Petrohawk of $1.21 a share, while analysts polled by Thomson Reuters, on average, estimate full-year earnings of $1.06 a share.

Shares of Petrohawk, a Houston-based explorer of oil and natural gas, closed Tuesday at $48. Greg Saulnier gs/pc"

How realistic is Dow 10K?

At least one analyst is calling for it - http://www.cnbc.com/id/25490573

My take so far is that the medium term outlook for US equities is highly dollar dependent. A sinking dollar can support profits through increased exports, reduced imports and higher value repatriations.

Absent those effects, however, the underlying dynamics point towards a significant weakness both on an anemic economy and on a renormalization of profits as a percentage of GDP.

Yeah energy stocks got fucking hammered today, even a lot of oil stocks surprisingly, which may explain my shitty day, all my oil and alternative energy stocks got hit on the order of 8-15% it seems. 6 turned into 6.5% down rather quickly here at the end of the day. Hoping to see some bounces tomorrow if I had any liquid cash laying around there sure are a lot of ones I would love to buy at the price they hit today.
