The stupid "reporter" was asking him why he was being paid $1.6 million by a state university in these tough economic times, and if he'd give any of that money back. Calhoun jokingly at first said absolutely not, trying to brush the question off. The reporter kept prodding him and Calhoun then put him in his place and mentioned that the basketball program actually did a service to the university by bringing in a net of $12 million every year.

Yes. Athletic donations don't really go to the school for academic purposes. When you give money to the Wolfpack Club you are helping to pay for facilities and their upkeep, paying for the salaries of the athletic department personnel, and some of it goes to paying for scholarships of student athletes. Calhoun though is still considered a state employee b/c the UConn athletic department falls under the umbrella of the university.
