Joie, I think your thighs look great! I personally love "thunder thighs" vs skinny ones.

Yes.
And just as a fun fact, gaining weight in certain spots more than others can be risk factors for certain disorders. I.e., they have found that a waist circumference of >35 cm is a risk factor for developing insulin resistance (meaning you gain weight in your waist area more than anywhere else).4/10/2011 4:46:18 PM |

circumference of 35 cm? that would be a newborn baby.
either you mean 35 inches, or perhaps 95 cm (~ 37 inches).
that would be definitely me.
i am 5' 7", 140 lbs, 34 inch waist. (i.e., skinny arms and legs)

sometimes, but when i say i dont eat enough protein i mean i'd like to get my protein at 50% or higher...i'm usually between that 30-40 mark daily.... i was at that high about a year and half ago and was really trim

Oops, sorry, yeah 35 inches... it has been a long day :\
And as for the >35 in waistline being a risk factor, my waist was probably 36 or 37 in when I was diagnosed with insulin resistance. So I believe it.

I thought it was more the waist to hips ratio >= 0.95, maybe that's a heart factor rather than diabetes related. 4/10/2011 10:38:36 PM |

Well this was specifically for insulin resistance, which I guess you can say is prediabetes.. research hasn't shown why exactly it's a risk factor, just that it is one 4/10/2011 10:41:24 PM |

i've been watching my sulfite intake the past few days and my weight is slowly going back down. i was at 142 but then shot up to 148 when i started having a lot of reactions.
i've also switched up my work out routine to 3 days weight training and 3 days cardio. hopefully this will help some. i would like to get down another 10-15 pounds but it took a year for me just to lose 10 pounds last year (which i have kept off) so we'll see
i saw some pictures of me from last weekend and i got all sad because i looked kind of chunkster
i'm really good about my diet normally but i'm wondering if it would be worthwhile to talk to a nutritionist again. i saw one a few years ago when i started having weight problems and she said i was eating correctly and couldn't figure out why i wasn't losing weight.

how many calories are you eating daily? 4/11/2011 10:42:32 AM |
CassTheSass cupid 35382 Posts user info edit post |
about 1200 a day. a good mix of veggies, fruit, protein, healthy fats, and carbs.
here's a breakdown of today (for example)
Breakfast: 1 banana, 2 hard-boiled eggs Lunch: homemade thin-sliced chicken with light panko breading with fresh spinach and goat cheese in it (rolled like chicken cordon bleu), homemade baked green beans with olive oil drizzled on it with salt/pepper Snack: 1 mini-babybel low fat/low cal cheese Dinner: homemade baked veal (thinly sliced - with seasonings), maybe potatoes, maybe broccoli/green beans
Workout (between lunch and snack): P90X back and shoulders
i think i might pick up some protein powder and start doing that after my work outs. i used to use a good one that was recommended to me by this girl that works at GNC. obviously something designed for a woman might be better for me.

what is your daily caloric requirement for your lifestyle?
i.e. if you have a desk job and get up very little, you are probably sedentary, so your requirement should be lower than if you have a very active job and run around and lift a lot
[Edited on April 11, 2011 at 10:51 AM. Reason : lifestyle as in what you do mostly during the week for work, not workouts] 4/11/2011 10:50:31 AM |
CassTheSass cupid 35382 Posts user info edit post |
oh i have a desk job - its sedentary. i get my work outs in with P90X and i also take the dog on 20-30 minute walks in the afternoon. so that combined is an hour+ of working out.
what my caloric intake should be varies depending on which website/app i use. some have said as little as 800 (daily plate) and some have said as much as 1500 a day (Spark People). i would think 1200 would fit nicely in the middle.
[Edited on April 11, 2011 at 10:55 AM. Reason : adding in caloric intake.] 4/11/2011 10:54:26 AM |
H8R wear sumthin tight 60155 Posts user info edit post |
basically, say it's 1500 calories for you, right?
to lose 1 lb per week, your net should be 1000 calories for the entire day
so you would not just eat 1000 calories total and work out and that's it, you would starve and probably not lose much weight at all...
you have to eat more on workout days Try to eat what you need to burn for your planned workout to end up at your net calories
4/11/2011 10:55:06 AM |
CassTheSass cupid 35382 Posts user info edit post |
i'm not making up excuses but a) i've tried doing this (Spark People actually is really good about factoring all of that in) and it didn't make any difference and b) honestly i'm not that hungry most of the time - especially days i work out. i'm actually LESS hungry than on days when i don't work out.
i eat when i'm hungry - when i ate 6 mini meals a day at set times when i wasn't particularly hungry, i gained 10 pounds.

Use that bmr calculate someone posted a few pages bck, it can factor in your activity level too. The calorieabout.com told me to eat 2200 a day and I was all I have a fairly active job, getting on the floor and back up again, constantly moving, and I work out but I still don't think that requires 2,200 calories. I figured 1,500 and I usually come in around 1500-1700/day.
My weight has been all over the place lately, last week I only lost one pound, buuuuuuuuut it is that time of month so I am sure that's a contributing factor because my caloric intake has been the same.
According to caloriecounter.about.com my defecit ranges day to day from 800calories to sometimes as much as 2,000 (days I work out). Is that TOO much of a defecit? I really can't see myself eating MORE to make the defecit smaller and I don't want to work out LESS... help???? 4/11/2011 1:34:35 PM |

My caloric budget right now (according to my LoseIt! app on my iPhone) is 1802 calories daily. That's if I work out or not.
It's actually been a pretty solid indicator. I busted through a plateau finally after weighing about the same for three weeks. I lost 1.5 kg (what, 3.2 lbs or something) and FINALLY lost an inch off my gut. Add in a 1% body fat loss and I'm feelin great.
I've not weighed 213 lbs since... probably 2006? I can't wait to get under 200! Only 14 more lbs to go!
Sidenote: I'm starting to feel strong too, not just skinny. Sticking to a regimen actually works well. I've been doing Power90 for 7 weeks now (That adds up to about 42 days working out six days a week) and I'm really pleased with the results. Looking forward to Power90 Master Series and then moving on to... -dundundunnnn- P90X. 4/11/2011 4:04:22 PM |

Sure there is. Calories in versus calories out. If you struggle to maintain weight then eat more. I can eat 3000 calories in one sitting easy. I know we all probably could. I can also burn 3000 calories on a good bike ride. That means I'd have to eat like 5500 calories in that day just to maintain my weight.
Sometimes I feel like Quinn always likes to point out how much of an under eater he is. 4/11/2011 7:38:31 PM |

I believe it's not as simple as that but as a rule of thumb your body burns calories and you take in calories. The conversion isn't always 1:1 but you can get a general idea of what foods have how many and what activities burn etc. 4/11/2011 9:01:01 PM |

What do you guys use to count your calories?? Or are you just guesstimating? I have absolutely no clue how many calories I'm consuming. I also don't really care...I'm concerned mainly with portions. I'm just curious about how everyone comes up with their calories. 4/12/2011 9:43:39 AM |

when i guesstimate i overestimate BADLY...like 50% (ie i thought forever i was eating 1500 but after weighing it out and measuring-it was closer to 800-900 )

lol. ahaha thanks.
like i said. its completely unintentional. i do not starve myself, i just do not have the time. and i dont even think about it most of the time, im too wrapped up in whats goin on . plus i can't exactly open a pack of tuna during a 5 hour sterilization lab (ahaha). and i guess i do have free time during my 45 minute commute but honestly i try not to eat in the car.
and then on the weekends cody and i have a million engagements that almost always revolve around dinner plans or lunch or brunch or wine tasting etc etc. (we had 5 separate plans this past weekend alone)
so yeah. its not like i think ohhhh i wont eat today because i ate so much yesterday or the other way around. it just works like that. and im sure im gonna get a lot of people throwing flack at me for it, and its totally understandable...its not healthy.....but it works for me, for now at least.
