I don't want Miller's ass if he can't beat shitty Rick Barnes. But I don't want him to do a lot better and take longer to go ahead and take over here. I'm torn.

"Re: Stevens

Completely playing devil's advocate here because there is ZERO doubt that Stevens is quite impressive, but I think some of our fans would not particularly care for this:

"75] Accordingly, he developed a strategy of always remaining calm and focused during games. He rarely raises his voice or gets emotional, instead quietly observing on the sideline with folded arms.[76] He does not get upset about bad calls by referees or player mistakes, preferring to focus on "the next play" rather than what just happened."

Our fans have been begging for a coach who would work the refs for years and many will suggest that he exhibits Sendek-like qualities in this regard."

lol, then we could say our coach crosses his arms too much instead of saying he just whistles and claps too much.

Problem with the last coach was that he was too much like a best friend to his players. Let's go after a guy that chest bumps everyone in the locker room. Let's also say that guy isn't emotional enough. Basically, let's contradict the fuck out of ourselves.

I definitely feel like if we swing for the fences in an attempt to get a homerun hire (Barnes, Miller, etc) we are in much better hands with Yow to at least wind up with double (Smart, Marshall, whoever else) than we were last time with Lee Fowler where we struck out completely.

Sid didn't get the money that was been rumored to be thrown around to Barnes and Calipari...I'm sure he'd get a smaller contract.

The man's been to the Final Four and now is in the Sweet Sixteen...at freakin' Butler. I don't care if he is naked on the sideline. The man can coach.

Add Shaka Smart to the 2nd tier/mid-major candidates list. Was an assistant under Donovan and is only 33, and runs a pressing, up tempo system. VCU is reaming Purdue right now.

Maybe becoming the hottest mid major name right now (excluding Brad Stevens)?

First, Jesus man read the thread

Second, can we stop perpetuating this fallacy

66.2 possessions per game, 196th in the country, below the national average. Would have been the 7th-highest tempo in the ACC.

Jim Larranaga was old as dirt when he made his run (and did nothing before that year). Shaka Smart at least has a high upside and has been an assistant under solid head coaches at major programs...

He's never finished higher than fourth in the Colonial!

He's only been a head coach for two seasons!

He's playing with Anthony Grant's recruits!

Do you really want to go down that path

^I'm not saying he should be our #1, but if we can't get some of our top choices then I don't think Smart would be a bad option.

I'm saying that Shaka Smart should be no higher than our 20th option. Way too much of a reach.

let's put this in perspective. hiring Smart in this coaching search would equate to a Sidney Lowe hire last search.

Shaka Smart has actually coached a college basketball game

and for the record im not clamoring for the guy, but it would not 'equate' to the Lowe hire IMO

Either way, hopefully it won't come down to Yow having to make a decision one or the other about Smart...meaning we get one of our top choices.

Last time we had no shot a good hire, this time we do.

Last time our ceiling was lower, so was our floor, our floor was Sid.

This time our ceiling is higher, so is our floor, our floor is Smart.

That make sense?

[Edited on March 20, 2011 at 9:01 PM. Reason : Basically hiring Smart, like hiring Lowe, means we struck the fuck out and we're doomed.]

I'd like to see your 20 *realistic* options higher than Smart.

1) Bill Self
2) Billy Donovan
3) Tom Izzo
4) Phil Jackson
5) Cryogenically frozen cross-spliced combination of Everett Case, Norm Sloan, and Jim Valvano.
6) ...

"Look at the speedy point guard of his attacking Purdue. Just think what he could have done with Javier Lopez!"

-Mike Gminskiism

Not saying we should turn to him right away but a name to add to the radar screen. I'd rather have him than the other coach from Richmond. Also recognizing that in most cases coaches at major conference schools come from mid-majors. Also worth noting that good mid-major coaches don't usually stay at the mid-major level for long (notable exceptions out there led by Mark Few).

Chris Mack is another 2 year high mid-major coach we could get. Xavier seems to do nothing but serve as the farm system for high major head coaches.

I would seriously rather have a box of Pop Tarts sitting on the sideline over Smart
