we have less talent but a bit more experience then last year, considering we have the same team minus Smith, Javi and Harrow

so any improvement over last years record is a success, whereas some dropoff isnt necessarily a failure.

this is basically a free year for Gott but this thread will still be used to gather for/against arguments for good/bad trends.

end stating of the obvious

One thing that's quite different....we have a MUCH harder schedule.

We're also learning a new system, with a first year Point Guard, so that can't help.

Captain obvious says we are a decently talented team across the front line, but we have zero depth. The main thing I've looked for under Gottfried is defensive improvement, rebounding, and hustling.

Our hustling, conditioning, and rebounding seem a ton better. Defense is a bit better, but It still has a long way to go

lo played plenty of PG last year

also, somehow the acc might be even weaker then last year, which reduces our schedule strength a bit. also, we played duke twice last year along w/ really good wisconsin and arizona teams.

True...I was talking about "up to this point" really. Our OOC schedule, overall, appears to be a good bit tougher. Even though we played Wisconsin (Which probably equals an Indiana game) and Arizona (Syracuse this year), it seems we've played a lot more solid mid-major conference teams in between.

Not sure what the SOS says about Lowe's team last year, but it just seems like we've played some pretty tough "scrub" teams this year.

At the end of the year, I'd say it should equal out with a weaker ACC.

wisky finished the year higher in rpi than zona, both in top 20 along w/ Gtown (who actually finished higher than both) and 'Cuse. Mason finished 24.

to be fair i was also surpised at how high Gtown was and the crappy teams we played were really low.

Our schedule is significantly harder this year. Last year our SOS was 66th in the country. Currently it's at 20th in the country.

Moreover, our non-con SOS (Pomeroy) was 230-something last year. 35th this year.

^^I'll bet you my paycheck that this year's OOC SOS of 35th doesn't change to be worse than 230.

Can't say I'd blame you.

Just saying, last year we played some decent teams, but they we also played some horrible, horrible scrubs that dropped the SOS. NCCU has been the closest thing to a scrub we've had this year (and they are... just not as much of one as Farleigh-Dickens or whatever it was).

last year we really did play the bottom of the dregs. This year most of the teams are top 200 so our SOS OOC will be higher.

Just got an email from godaddy that http://www.firemarkgottfried.com/ is up for renewal.

I registered it the day he was announced to preempt any jackass ncsu fans from being jackasses.

I don't have any intention of renewing it. anyone want it?

Central has been one of the very worst division 1 teams the last few years. They are god awful. They are the epitome of a scrub.

Hey Justin-dude, they're actually much improved this year over year's past. They actually have two good D-I transfers on their team this year.

I realize they're (relativeily) a terrible team, but they've been stomping some even shittier teams this year:

vs JOH (who?) W 115-41
vs MOR (who?) W 112-50
vs. BBS (who?) W 104-55

Read the damn thread, jeez.

Somebody stated " NCCU has been the closest thing to a scrub we've had this year (and they are... just not as much of one as Farleigh-Dickens or whatever it was"

That's what all this was in response to. Nobody said they were actually a good team. Quit being such a black/white extremist.

So according to the Raleigh Nightlife thread this

is Coach Gott's daughter with Jaqawn Raymond. Positive cred points for Gott I guess? Although it seems like a lot of negative points could come from this as well.

Quote :
"Gottfried knows that the Wolfpack can get a whole lot better
By Josh Goodson

For the NC State men's basketball team over the past 2 decades very rarely did you hear much optimism surrounding the program. However, after a 79-74 victory to open ACC play on Sunday night against a team that they had lost nine straight contests to, the Maryland Terrapins, it is easy to be excited about what is going on in Raleigh.

While it's exciting for a Wolfpack (12-4, 1-0 ACC) fanbase who is desperately wanting to be nationally relevant again, Head Coach Mark Gottfried is not going to let himself or his team get ahead of themselves. "We feel like we can get a whole lot better. That's the good news right now," said Gottfried in an interview with The Insiders on 620 The Buzz. Gottfried realizes that while winning their opener is very important, he is honest about the situation and realizes there are still 15 more conference games remaining that are equally as important.

While there are many contributions coming from all over the court for NCSU at this point, it is the play of two specific players which has helped spear-head the Wolfpack on their current six game winning streak.

When Lorenzo Brown, sophomore guard, was given the task of being the Wolfpack's starting point guard this year, there was a bit of worry from the coaching staff on how fast he will grasp the role and duties come with that possession. Well after a 11 point, 9 assist, 7 rebound and most importantly only 1 turnover performance against the Terrapins, I believe all doubts have been put to rest. Gottfried said about his point guard, "He (Lorenzo) has a lot of confidence right now...and just needs to continue learning that position".

Another big question heading into this season was what kind of effort the Wolfpack was going to get out of sophomore CJ (Calvin) Leslie. Leslie, who was often ridiculed last season for lack of effort and being somewhat uncoachable has appeared to turn over a new leaf in becoming a complete basketball and dangerous threat for the Pack. Leslie is coming off a double double against the Terrapins, where he scored 20 points and had 11 rebounds. Gottfried will be the first one to sing the praises of Leslie. Gottfried said, "Calvin's been really good. He's a tough matchup for opponents."

Gottfried knows there is still plenty of work to do and many goals to accomplish and to do so he must keep his players on the track and keep them right on course.

NC State returns to the court on Wednesday night when they host the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets."
