I'm trying to figure out why you're saying that the rule that ernie posted doesn't apply to recruits who have signed an LOI.

well because:

1) they aren't enrolled students
2) they haven't had any financial aid from the school

you aren't a transfer if you've never enrolled at the school.

Yeah, signing that LOI makes you a student-athlete

Quote :
"What is the National Letter of Intent (NLI)?

The NLI is a binding agreement between a prospective student-athlete and an NLI member institution

A prospective student-athlete agrees to attend the institution full-time for one academic year (two semesters or three quarters).
The institution agrees to provide athletics financial aid for one academic year (two semesters or three quarters).
Basic penalty for not fulfilling the NLI agreement: A student-"

Signing an LOI would also satisfy the other conditions in the ACC transfer rules

Justin is correct. They aren't transfers because they haven't enrolled. The transfer rules don't apply.

However, the ACC has a rule that once a player signs a LOI to one ACC school, he has to sit out a year and lose a year of eligibility if he reneges and signs with another ACC school.

So an incoming freshmen would only have 3 eligible years if he went to a school other than the one he originally signed the LOI with if we played that following season?

provision of the National Letter of Intent may not represent another ACC institution in
intercollegiate athletics competition until the individual has completed one (1) full
academic years of residence at the latter ACC institution and shall be charged with the
loss of one (1) season of eligibility in all sports. An individual receiving a mutual release
per Item 5 of the National Letter of Intent may not represent another ACC institution in
intercollegiate athletics competition until the individual has completed one full academic
year at the latter ACC institution and shall be charged with the loss of one season of
eligibility in all sports. Waivers of the ACC rule must demonstrate objective evidence
that proves the student-athlete’s extraordinary personal hardship merits a waiver of the
normal application of the policy.
These waivers may be considered by the ACC faculty
athletics representatives, acting as a committee of the whole, only after all appeals to the
National Letter of Intent Steering Committee and the National Letter of Intent Appeals
Committee have been processed. (Revised: April 2007)"

Ok so yeah the ACC has the rule for this, I was thinking that if you got an unconditional release you could play immediately, but not in the ACC.

Justin was right that transfer rules have zero to do with Letters of Intent. Ernie was wrong.

Re: Julius Randle, it would be an absolute coup if we signed him, considering that he has been Roy's to target for well over a year now. Tarheel fans believe it's their birthright to snatch up the top highschool talent in-state and otherwise. Even when Gott pulled in Warren, Heel fans claimed that Roy had pulled his offer after they signed Brice Johnson.

Gottfried grabbing Randle would shatter the notion that we cannot recruit head-to-head with UNC, and signal a shift in the balance of power in the Triangle.

I don't care at all that he's being recruited by Roy

Of all the goofy stupid graffiti typography recruit videos I've seen, Randle's is the first that gave me a legit basketball boner. He is for real.

message boards are hilarious. doesn't the quote above basically say that a recruit being released from his loi can't attend another acc school unless he sits out one year? and he loses a year of eligibility?

Bullet, you're out of your element.

ACC transfer rules say that a player has to sit out 2 years if he transfers between ACC schools. Ernie was arguing that VT's signed recruits fall under this transfer rule; they don't.

I didn't see that as part of the debate. Maybe it's you that's out of your element? Basically, I was wondering if there was any chance that the VT guy would transfer to NC State. It looks like he'd have to be dumb to consider that. That's all I wanted to know.

Ernie was quoting the text of the transfer rule, not the LOI rule. That was my only point. Nevertheless, splitting hairs...

Suffice it to say that there are 2 rules, and Harrell absolutely gets ensnared in 1. He's not coming here.

Success is fleeting. Duke isn't what it once no matter that title. Really since K got burned nearly by Maggette he changed his recruiting ways.

Anyway, we need able bodies desperately now down low if Tyler Harris news is true.

Yeah his dad said it was official. Basically all stemming from PT, pretty much wanted Harris starting ASAP. Which is short-sighted since he'll have to sit out next year anyway and by then he'd have had a chance to take Leslie's spot.

Oh well, perhaps now Jefferson gives us even stronger consideration since he'll have a good shot to be first off the bench for Howell and Leslie. And with the way we pick up fouls, that's a lot of PT.

Amazing how after such a strong season, we're still losing players left and right to transfers. Painter I understood, this one is a bit of a head-scratcher.

The head scratching part is the timing. I could understand if he transferred if we had gotten amile or young but that hasn't happened. Maybe they thought CJ would renege on his position of returning and now that the draft deadline is officially past he decided to leave.

Quote :

Having a good or bad season doesn't have much to do with it. It's usually players realizing they aren't as good as they thought and not happy with playing time.
