^^ is there a way he could use a proxy server?

Support Cancer Research and the NCSU Wolfpack With Your Computer's Spare Time!

If you're like most people you've got a computer that spends a lot of time idling on a blank screen or running a cool screensaver. Did you know it's possible to directly support Cancer, Alzheimer's, and Cystic Fibrosis research using your computer's idle time? The Stanford University Folding@home project provides a small piece of software which uses your computer?s spare processing power to run simulations and help researchers understand these diseases.

The NCSU Wolfpack Folding@home team has been ranked as high as 81st in the world but we were recently knocked out of the Top 100. While our team has had
much success in the past, if we don't get some new computers and PS3s running soon we'll keep moving farther down the ladder

Got a PS3? PS3s currently provide over 60% of the processing power in the Folding@home network! Each PS3 that joins the NCSU Folding Team provides huge boost and brings us closer to getting back in the Top 100! If you have one watch the video below to see how easy it is to setup the client and help the NCSU Wolfpack Folding team.

Download The Client Here:
http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html We recommend using the "No-nonsense text-only" client for most computers. For multi-core systems, the SMP client will get you and the team far more points than the traditional client (but it doesn't start as a service, so you'll have to restart the client manually or automatically when your computer restarts). If you have a Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading, its best to turn off Hyperthreading in the BIOS if you know how.
If you have an ATI X1800 or X1900 series graphics card you can even run Folding@home on your graphics card (with great results).

Installation Instructions
Enter a Username
Enter Team [59] (thats the important part)
Launch automatically at machine startup, installing this as a service [yes]
Ask before fetching/sending [no]
Use internet explorer settings [no]
Use Proxy [no] (unless you want to use a proxy)
Allow receipt of work assignments and return of work results greater than 5MB [yes]
Change Advanced Options: [no]

The folding client will run in the background as a service at low priority and won't interfere with your work/fun or slow down your computer at all. And you can run as many PC and PS3 clients you want under your username to contribute to your points and to the team points. If you have any questions feel free to contact me or any other member of the team.

Did anyones SMP client stop working? If so theres a story about the SMP beta client "expiring", and its recommended that we update our clients (though there doesnt appear to be any real changes).

Thx for the heads up, my smp clients were still working on a WU. Just got them updated.

Looks like in about 2 weeks we should be <=100?

I end up having to reinstall every once in a while, for various errors, such as those listed above. you can also delete the two files KRUZNBY mentioned previously, think it was the queue file and work folder, then restart the fah.exe This morning i had to do the delete and restart 5 times berfore it would start going...

it has been something that i have had to babysit a bit, but it does bring in points.

do you have a fire wall up that might be blocking it from getting a WU? are there any errors in your event viewer from other files?

I turned off my firewall, that got a new WU started, but its been running for almost 30min and its still on 0 steps, but maybe that's just how the console client works in the beginning?

if it is over an hour let us know, mine run from 30-60 mintues depending on my use of the pc. you are running on a dual core right?

just give it a few hours, it will be fine.

you can also run fahmon to make sure the point production is where you want it to be.

the only problem is that if you don't have a dual core then you might not finish on time. they usually have a 3-4 day deadline. so if it doesn't finish each core in around 90-120 minutes, then it might not finish by the deadline (not sure what would happen then)...

well I'm thinking I might switch back to the graphical client... at least that was working, does the console client take more system resources?

Honestly, I'd go with what works. Your 2500+ should be easily getting between 150-250 PPD, based on my experience with similar processors. The console client isn't significantly faster than the graphical one and uses resources about equally as well, so I'd go with that if it actually works better for you.

^^^^ he has a single core (athlon 2500+), but thats a good point about the SMP deadlines.

^^ the console is supposed to use less system resources since the graphical client has to display the image. are you still at 0% or something?

does anyone know how I can get my firewall to let the console client thru? It's Norton security 2003. For everything else it asks me if I want to allow, this it just blocks. I'm gonna give the console version a couple more hours to see if this new WU does any better. The last one did an early end unit.

Uninstall it. Seriously. If you're behind a router, then just run the XP firewall and you're just fine.

^^I suggest the above option, since NAT and a router firewall will provide a reasonable amount of security, and the XP firewall is pretty good - but if you really want to use it, you'll need to find the setting for blocked/allowed port numbers and enable port 8080.

That's not really your firewall, that's probably an adblocker in the Norton suite of apps. You can just disable the firewall part, but leave the adblocker running and be just fine.

If you can just open port 8080 on it, that's the best way, but if you really need to disable the Norton firewall to make it work, it won't hurt so long as the XP firewall is running.

it already had port 8080 set to allow connections, and as I took a closer look at the logs it was connecting but just unable to get work. Regardless, I've been running it for 2 days now and couldn't complete a unit, its just not as stable as the graphical client for some reason, so I've switched back. Let's hope that helps.

Although they have mainly been project 3040; has anyone else had any troubles completing that one?

So, anyone got any solutions for the proxy problem where I can't send WUs back when they are finished?

Would it be possible to just put the finished WUs on another machine and upload them that way?

yeah i meant to add that to my post...that looks way too complicated unless you are doing something on a large scale.

as far as corporate firewalls go, there is sometimes an ip address range which are unrestricted ip addresses. get your IT dude drunk and ask him for the ip address range, set your computer to one of those ip addresses, profit.

time for water cooling... a bit noisier but a lot cooler j/k

for the $100 you'd spend in cooling the computer you can go out and buy an A/C unit that's what i did at least...

It sounds like if we could get a proxy going for some of these people we could up our production significantly. Anyone have an ideas on what we could use or how to do this? Can we rent a proxy service somewhere that we could share the cost? I'm not up to speed with this sort of thing.

keep it up guys, 5.6 days until we breach the top 100 again!!

aaron... if you are behind a proxy, you should be able to just do a tracert to http://www.google.com and use whatever IP is in your 2nd or 3rd hop (basically the first non-192.168 IP that's in the trace)

is your isp blocking port 8080, or is it your work computer? also are you limited to 8080. i dont have the program and wonder if the data is sent through a fakeass http connection (which my isp would ban) or what.

my isp blocks certain ports and i just accept connections on random outside ports and route them to the correct place inside my network. but i dont know if F@H allows it

just an idea cause im up late. i can also set up a couple of machines to help when i get time, but more importantly (it sounds) i may be able to talk someone into opening a proxy or 2 to select IP addresses outside our normal range (FOR THIS PROJECT ONLY OR I WILL NEVER HELP YOU AGAIN ASSHOLES!!!1)

pm me if i forget to check back, i am battling insomnia tonight and i never post here cause i hate nerds
