Wow...I started this thread a really long time ago. Little did I know that it would be one of the most memorable on TWW.
So, strangely enough, I now live in Atlanta where the Walking Dead is set...it seems this scenario follows me everywhere...

Unless you have a ton of food stored, those kind of things only work if the zombies disperse after they cant get to you or see you. 12/18/2010 11:07:06 AM |

While visiting my storage unit today, I realized how it could be a decent defensible position. It's gated, and the units have either roll-down doors or bolted. Food and water would be a huge problem, but you never can tell what you might find in a storage unit. 12/18/2010 3:40:19 PM |

Just make sure you have a contingency plan for both zombies and raptors. God help us all if zombie raptors attacked...
The good thing about a zombie attack is that the demand for foreign oil would go down and the world's supply would increase by like 1000 years.

Man decapitates apparent stranger in Canary Islands supermarket
http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/europe/05/13/canary.islands.supermarket.beheading/index.html?hpt=T2
Quote : | "(CNN) -- A knife-wielding man attacked a woman in a supermarket, eventually cutting off her head and running away with it, government officials in Spain's Tenerife Island said Friday.
The man entered a shopping center in the town of Arona, in the Cristianos area of Tenerife, and stole a knife from the supermarket before attacking the apparent stranger, a central government spokeswoman said.
Shopping center security guards were alerted and chased the man, subduing him until police arrived. The man, whom national police in Tenerife identified as a Bulgarian, was apparently known in the shopping area, the government spokeswoman said.
The British Foreign and Commonwealth office confirmed Friday that a British national had died in Tenerife, part of the Canary Islands." |

For those of you who might appreciate a traditional literary bent while also enjoying zombies, let me recommend "Zone One" by Colson Whitehead. Fantastic book that I probably enjoyed even more on my second read-through, which finished about fifteen minutes ago.
It requires some patience...a lot of references aren't explained until halfway through the book, flashbacks and flash-forwards appear with no warning or segue, and the prose can tend towards the dense. The payoff is well worth it, though. 5/18/2012 2:01:53 AM |

I'm about to leave on vacation and need to catch up on some zombie literature and need some more recommendations for books.
What I've knocked out so far: World War Z Zombie Survival Guide The Morningstar Strain books 1&2 The Walking Dead Graphic Novels
I plan on picking up Zone One and The Day to Day. I'd love to take 2 or 3 more since I plan on just sitting on the dock and reading. 6/22/2012 5:13:24 PM |

Walmart ammunition is the first stop. shotgun buckshot and 9mm ammo primarily
grab a ton of non-perishable food on the way out. also grab several door knob/lock/key combos along with screwdriver sets.
head to the closest gun shop to get what's left, hit the next gun shop, then the next one. mostly for shotguns and pistols. A few rifles but as many shotguns and pistols as possible.
go to the country and find a house with plenty of space around it to see what's coming from all sides. must be brick or stone first floor, and as few windows below 8 feet as possible. change out the lock on one of the upstairs bedrooms and store food and ammo in that room. start making trips to gun stores, pawn shops, grocery stores and stocking up on ammo, guns, non-perishable food, water, liquor, wine.
eventually get a tank and fill with gas to keep at the house. scavenge for a generator. from there i will play it by ear but definitely start recruiting for housemates/army members on trips to town. 12/14/2012 10:52:33 AM |

You think these things will just be lying around all over the place? Let's say you did find one, odds are it would have been sitting around for a while, how well versed are you in tank maintenance to get it up and running? And if you somehow did get it running, do you really know how to drive a tank? Do you even know where to put the fuel?12/18/2012 4:46:34 PM |

I read this thread from beginning to end last night, for the first time.
A couple of observations.
3 People who have posted in it are now deceased, one was a gun collector who used his own weapon to kill himself, another was natural causes, another was an OD.
The other observation I have is why the hell cant we use central prison as a fort??? Its not far at all from campus and would be way easier to get people to leave than UT, just fucking tell them its a mass prisoner release, once they get off the grounds they do not get back in, they are prisoners....they want out. They leave the gate running drawing the zombies away like bait. The guards will surely abandon the place as soon as societal order begins to break down. (See Katrina flooded jails for examples)
The cells can be used individual quarantines to make sure no one in the group is a zombie for the first day or so. Also anyone not standing guard can lock themselves inside a cell at night to make sure that if a zombie manages to get past the fortifications and whoever is standing guard it cant get everyone in their sleep. 12/31/2012 5:28:53 PM |

This always bugged me about I Am Legend. I know it's not a "true" zombie movie, but still... There's a scene in which you can clearly see a light tank (maybe an M113?) which has been abandoned. If the main character - who is military, mind you - knows that all he has to do is hole up until daylight and then the monsters go away... WHY DIDN'T HE USE THAT TANK?! If it looks even remotely like your house is gonna get overrun, get your ass in the car and drive to that tank lickety-split. 1/2/2013 10:38:56 PM |

compound bow with quality arrows and deadly arrowheads
a few select books on surviving in the wilderness (what kinds of wildlife/fauna to eat, how to make fires, fashion first aid, etc)
mountain bike with air pump and tire repair stuff
knife and other small utilities/tools/hand-crank radio
sharpener/rope/essentially camping equipment
i'd then hightail it on quiet side roads to the nearest military base if it was secure or the mountains
then i'd prepare to live like this for the rest of my life 1/3/2013 12:15:55 AM |

^^Sounds like a legit plan provided you know how to use a compound bow and are able to make your own arrows.
I feel like a military base may be a bad idea though, lots of people would be flocking to it and if anything, you want to avoid dense populations of people. Aside from the obvious that a zombie outbreak amongst said people would cause chaos in a very short period of time, there is a high risk that they won't have enough food/water/supplies for everyone they are attempting to shelter and the people would tear themselves apart. I'd think you'd be better off in the mountains where you don't have to rely on anyone at least until the early panic dies down.
The thing about the prison, Str8BacardiL is that tons of people have been watching The Walking Dead lately and would probably think the same thing. You'd roll up and find 50 Asian dudes in baseball hats claiming that they have "speed on their side" and 50 rednecks with crossbows thinking they are Darryl. 1/3/2013 1:48:34 PM |
