I think the business data plan is $15 more for use of the Exchange push service?

The personal data plan does not allow for that I guess.

^^yeah it's windows mobile 6.1. It's got an integrated sony interface though that uses panels and looks pretty neat. There's a bunch of videos on youtube. After a while i've become a fan of WM just because of all the programs out there for it. You can find almost anything you need, whereas with BBs or the iphone (that will be changing very quickly) you're very limited.

^^ Yes it sucks, I could almost justify it to have a phone with gps & the internet everwhere I go. $80/month I would probably do, kind of paltry to quibble over an extra $10/month but at some point you have to just say no.

No, I think that feature is for everyone. They charge more for business data plan for the same reason they charge $10 more for data if you use an iPhone 3G: because they can.

there's a third party application called showtime (prob others too) which does video recording, and it works pretty well.

MMS and flash would be cool, but I read the speaker is better on the 3G model. And I suspect the MMS issue will be addressed in a software update at some point.

I'm actually fine with 2 megapixels. I'd say this camera is better than most I've used (granted, I'm not really one who chases uber phones but I've used a few nokia and a few samsung camera phones). It really does need a flash though because it's worthless in low light.

That video recording app is OK, but doesnt it top out at 5 seconds or something ridiculous? Maybe I need to give it another spin.

true, the low light performance leaves much to be desired. and i'm assuming that software isn't going to fix that one

Showtime is limited to 5 seconds unless you "donate," then they send you a key which supposedly unlocks it. There might be other apps out there, but I'm just saying that the technology is out there. I'm not sure what the 5 second holdup is/was all about, there was some drunknbass app which was limited to 5 seconds too.

Just bc it's only 2MP doesn't mean it sucks balls. Resolution is NOT everything. It does a hell of a lot better pictures than any other 2MP camera I've used and better than a lot that are higher resolution.

Just because other cameras have more pixels does not mean they produce a better picture.

I guess. But the real "camera" phones are 5 megapixels. You'd think apple would have atleast gone to 3.

Yes it obviously depends on the optics and lense, but i was never that impressed with the 2 MP sensor on the iphone. I mean they market it as a media device and yet they still haven't updated the lens. Older nokia and sony phones have much better camera lenses. I guess i'll shut up about the specs. It will never satisfy me.

I just wish we could have the specs of a Xperia or HTC ppc and the gui of an Iphone. Now that would be the ultimate phone.

^the HTC Mogul is an old phone. The new HTC Diamond has a 3.2MP as well as the Xperia. But i never said either of those had a 5mp.

Previously when i posted about the xperia i said "3.2 MP camera w/ flash (5 would have been nicer)." 3.2 is alright, mainly because it has the flash. 5 would be nice, but there's only a few 5MP phones out now.

I will be buying up some old iphones as the mac faithful rush to get the 3g model. I have a few projects in mind where the wifi, touchscreen and data storage could come in handy.

It would be interesting to try this project with an unlocked iphone instead of the digital8 recorder + modular display.

The iPhone 2mp camera delivers better quality than any non-sony Camera phone I've seen.

MP DOES NOT MEAN SHIT on small CCD cameras.

I got to play with a couple of "10mp" samsung camera phones from Korea.

The iPhone and oooollld Sony Ericsson S710A were vastly superior in picture quality

I thought CCDs were also in compact cameras with much smaller sensors than slrs. When comparing compact cameras (point-and-shoots) the amount of pixels is important, right?

I mean i'm aware MPs are only one factor along with the optics and quality of the lens, but saying a 2MP camera has great picture quality can only go so far. 1600 by 1200 won't even fill my desktop. What if i want to make a larger print? Can a 2MP camera be so much better in quality that it outweighs the benefit of 10MP's resolution/size? And those samsung 10MP cameras had that bad of quality that a 2MP sensor looked better?

-so for example if i took the Sony K850i which has a 5mp sensor and compared it to another Sony phone with say 2-3.2MP but the same quality CCD sensor, you're saying the 5mp wouldn't look better simply because it's got a larger resolution? You said MP does not mean shit on small CCD cameras. Or did you simply mean if you're comparing a crappy CCD 10MP with a nice CCD 2MP, then it means shit?

basically that's how it really is. the problem is there isn't much way to judge just by looking at specs whether you're getting a 2MP camera that's going to take very good pics for a phone or a 10MP camera that's going to take horribly shitty pictures. IMO quality is most important, MP's are second. I'd much rather have a 2MP that takes great pictures although not the highest resolution rather than high resolution pics that I really can't even see any detail in because the sensor was so shitty to begin with.

I'll post some pics of some of the better ones from my iphone in a bit if I can find them.. I haven't seen many phone pictures that are any better.

5 years ago, they were sayin that in regard to music and email then everyone started using thier phones for internet and media. 5 years from now i'm sure phones and compact cameras will merge together. I mean there's already the Sony line of "Cybershot Phones". Why should i carry a phone AND a compact camera, when i can have both?

Concerning the discussion about the video camera software, there's a program on installer called Video Recorder that lets you take 30 second video clips. supposedly they registered version ups that.

The only unlocked phones you'll find are the EDGE iphones.

For the 3G model, you gotta sign the 2-year service contract if you want to buy the phone. It gets activated at AT&T before it ever leaves the store. That, and there seems to be some confusion about whether the SIM card is even removeable this time around.

^ i would hope so considering they go bad from time to time.

so at&t still has exclusive rights to the iphone? i was hoping that they would go to sprint or verizon, even though the service isn't that great here.

so if at&t is getting the iphone on 7/11, boooooooooooo. i want them to come out with it now, so that the early adopters can figure out all the bugs.

if i were to get one, i don't need the data plan. text messaging maybe, but $39.99 is cool with me since 99% places I go to have free 802.11g.

sounds like you'll have to buy one on ebay (bring mucho $) and unlock it through ziphone or a group like that. i'm sure they'll have an unlock out for the 3g before or soon after it's release

So all current iphone users who want to go to the 3g version will have to start a 2-year contract over again? I guess they're making more money in the long run because this way they get everyone in another 2 year contract as opposed to just charging more for the phone w/o a contract.

It's just that i'm still in school and on a family plan because it's quite a bit cheaper, so there's really no way for me to get the new iphone because the rents just signed another contract a few months ago and probably won't resign it just so i can get an iphone which i've been considering if i could get one for only 199$.

here's a breakdown of how the contracts will work
http://www.tuaw.com/2008/06/10/iphone-upgrade-breakdown/

Quote :
"Assuming that the memo is real and that AT&T's policy won't change between now and July 11, this is the situation:

If you are a current AT&T customer and you have a 2G iPhone

Take a deep breath, you can get the new iPhone 3G for the new lower price (starting at $199.99), as long as you sign a new two-year contract and add-on one of the new required data plans.

To quote from the AT&T memo:
When the 3G device launches, all active postpaid customers in good standing with a 2G iPhone will be eligible to receive the qualified upgrade pricing for a 3G device regardless of service tenure. (Customers that would not otherwise be eligible due to tenure will be made eligible at launch).

So if you bought an iPhone in June of last year -- you can upgrade to the new 3G phone. If you bought an iPhone in May (maybe you were the last person in your city to buy one), you can still upgrade at the lower price.

If you are a current AT&T customer and you do NOT have a 2G iPhone

You may or may not be eligible to buy the iPhone 3G at its lower price upon release. It depends on the length of your contract, the time of your last handset upgrade and anything else that weighs into AT&T's standard upgrade policy. The pricing for non-qualified upgrades has not been determined, but phones will still need to be activated in-store and with a data-plan and two-year contract.

If you are a new AT&T customer

Assuming you pass the credit check (Pre-Paid and Pick-Your-Plan are not eligible for the iPhone 3G), you can get the iPhone 3G for the new lower price. You will be required to sign up for a two-year contract and a voice and data plan.

Cancellation policy spelled-out

From the AT&T memo:
To cancel service within the first 30 days, the customer must return their equipment to the place of purchase (no exceptions). If the customer cancels service after 30 days, they will be charged the ETF. The customer is not required to return the device to cancel after 30 days.

So you have 30-days to return your iPhone 3G and your service will be cancelled as soon as you return the device. After 30 days, you can keep your phone but canceling service will mean you are responsible for the the ETF (early termination fee), which is usually several hundred dollars."

thats some serious bullshit, if they arn't going to sell this without a contract thats like screwing over your own customers. Thats like saying, everybody else can get the new iPhone, just not the people already with us, until your contract is up.
