They're my only hope at this point

Chelsea might miss out on Europe at this rate, Arsenal is still Arsenal until they back it up, and I won't be pulling for City

plus VDV is a cool dude.

yeah I don't keep a regular eye on referee assignments or anything... and after I saw your post, I watched and it never seemed to show the near side linesman so I looked it up

It just seemed weird to me because I thought once you get to FIFA level, you're either center or line full-time, not both.

LOL at the ESPN graphics changing back.

I didn't watch too much soccer when Ronaldinho was in his prime but he always seemed like more of a dribbler and used feints and deception to make space rather than subtle little touches like Berbatov does.

Ronaldinho maybe with the touch, but it's hard to compare them because Berbs is like 6" taller and doesn't dribble the same way, plus he'll stand people up and hold them off the ball to create, which you'd never see Ronnie do.

^ He has a lazy style and can create in tight spaces similar to Anelka IMO. I don't know too many older guys that well so I can't compare the past and present

What actually came here to say was...

SPURS now 4th in table

I can't comment on the match yesterday because I still haven't seen it, but I plan on changing that this afternoon. Let's now hope that Bolton can work some magic against the Blues today to keep it that way.

Ahead in the new year, we've got two winnable fixtures in Fulham and Everton coming up before the Man U showdown. Can't wait for that Jan 16th match

this is all on hodgson for sure. there is no way that group of players should be middle of the table only 3 pts clear of relegation. instead of taking konchelsky with him from fulham he shouldve taken hangelaand with him instead. they obv needed a center back more than a left fullback after they took back fabio aurelio on a free.

but i think hodgson is making it perfectly clear he cant handle a bigger club with egos

It doesn't help that Torres looks like he doesn't even want to be on the field in every Liverpool game I've watched other than when they beat Chelsea. They don't have a goal scorer at the moment.

well, when your plan of attack is to back pass to Reina/Skrtel/Kyrgiakos every time you get the ball so they can kick it long, a finesse goal scorer like Torres is going to get frustrated chasing after that bullshit all the time

I wouldn't be mad at Torres at all if he wanted to leave (except if it's to United) and I pretty much expect it to happen at this point

I was going to post something yesterday comparing Rooney and Torres' futility vs their hype/wages but I figured it would come off as a flame so I quit composing.

The World Cup seemed the be the point where it fell apart for both players and neither have come close to recovering their old form. Any theories on why it happened like that? Outside of Liverpool players/manager of course, because he played like shite on the best team in the World in July.

Reverse mind fuck could possibly explain it.

Can't really speak on Rooney, but the injury Torres had pre-WC and during the WC definitely affected things. It probably hurt his confidence a bit that they won the World Cup without him too.

I think Torres still has the quality, he showed that against Chelsea. He's just playing on a team with a shit manager with shit tactics. Gerrard's really been the only player that's ever truly formed a connection with him consistently and he's been out of a majority of the season. I also think he really wanted out of the club after Rafa left but was convinced for some reason - maybe just out of loyalty to the fans. And I guess it's starting to sink in that they're a mid-table side under Hodgson and it's not going to be fun to be a part of.

*I typically think the "it's the manager's fault" is a crappy excuse but I think by this point it's pretty clear that Hodgson is in way over his head at Liverpool and his best players are suffering in his system instead of flourishing.

I very much consider myself a tactical n00b so I don't always pick up on shit in that aspect of the game. What exactly is Woy's system and how does it differ from Rafa's system?

Hodgson prefers two banks of 4 to defend - the defense sits far back, rarely past the 18 yard line, and with a line of midfielders not too far in front of them. They're basically conceding the majority of possession to the other team and defending in numbers when the other team attacks. That works fine if you're fucking USA against Spain and you have no chance at keeping possession anyways (or if you have defenders that don't play like fucking Konchesky every game)

The problem is when Liverpool wins the ball, their forwards are so isolated up top that there's no chance at a basic buildup through the midfield - it's long ball after long ball.

And that's not even getting into his player decisions - he prefers Konchesky for whatever fucking reason over defenders like Agger/Aurelio that can actually pass the ball. He plays Meireles as a winger when he's clearly not and doesn't let Gerrard play the free role he's most effective in.

this guy knows what I'm talking about

oh compared to Rafa - they're both defensive managers but Rafa liked to press higher up the field, force mistakes the give his best players the ball in dangerous areas in the attacking 3rd. It's why Liverpool always suffered against weaker teams that played what Woy is playing now... sitting back and defending. There's not much chance to force mistakes while you're pressing if they're just packing it in. But against teams that actually play offense, it was a hell of a lot more effective than this horseshit

It's also a mentality thing - how can you seriously tell a group of players that mostly were around two seasons ago when they finished 2nd in the league to sit back and defend against fucking Wolves at home? It's the underdog bullshit that got Fulham to mid-table level, it's not going to do anything to get Liverpool good again

[Edited on December 30, 2010 at 10:45 AM. Reason : yes and also, I'm mad]

good write up

What you're saying makes perfect sense and I haven't watched them play enough to pick up on the defensive mentality that you're talking about. I'm gonna be looking for that next time though. It does seem like horseshit and , in my opinion, is bad for soccer when managers get too defensive and refuse to open up the game. That's Serie A type shit. They would rather the other team not score than actually scoring themselves. Booooooring.

On another note, who would you want (realistically, of course) when Woy is sacked?

It sucks that a team with the pedigree of Liverpool is resorting to tactics like that when all the newly promoted teams are going out trying to win games - Blackpool, WBA, Newcastle games are typically pretty good about playing an open game.

My pick for manager now would probably by Owen Coyle - Bolton's another example of team that's changed its reputation from shit to an exciting team to watch. His resume isn't much to talk about at the moment but I think he's an exciting young coach. I think they should drop Roy, give Dalglish the job until the end of the season and then evaluate available coaches or just keep Dalglish if he's done a good job.
