definately a eureka

old school, not sure which model, probably from around 1998 (give, or more likely take, a couple)

stood up to 40+ mph winds (with backup reinforcment)...so it's good in my book

damn i really like that picture, but i know i couldnt get that with my cam. i wish i knew more about my camera. i just take thousands of pictures and burn em to DVDs and let the DVDs just sit there. i need to learn the stuff w/ RAW or whatever, and how to use photoshop for stuff besides cropping.

until then, ive sworn off using my fancy camera until i can use it properly, and i'll stick with my fuji finepics ps bs

^7 Thanks! It took some work to get that picture to turn out like it did. The sky was overexposed, so I used shadows/highlights adjustment in photoshop cs2 to bring it out, and then softened the sky so it would have a nicer gradient. It looks more like an HDR shot because of it, but it's a lot better than it was. If you really want to learn photoshop, I picked up this book: http://www.buy.com/prod/31191595.html It covers everything I'd ever want to do. It's written in a really straight-forward style with complete steps so you can pick up anywhere in the book and be ready to work... that and I think the guy's got a good sense of humor.

cropped

not cropped

Thoughts? I like the tree more in the one that has not been cropped, but don't care for the shadow in the lower right.

Go midway - allow a little triangle of that shadow, so you get more of the tree's canopy.

I tried lightening this up, but the blue background just didn't look good.

i've been noticing something on some photos lately, like the last photo in Skack's recent post, for example

the "lines" or whatever that almost look like the countour lines on a topo map

wtf is that?

Your monitor fucking blows then. You're going to need to be more specific then just "lines" because that is vague as hell.

Well then you suck at the English language if you can't think of anything more descriptive than "lines."

I could probably answer your question if I knew what you were talking about.

here, i've outlined the "lines" as they appear on my screen

(i'll remove this if you want, just trying to illustrate what I see)

maybe i'm retarded, but the similarity to contour lines i mentioned is about as descriptive as i can get here

i think he's referring to the gradient. i can't see it, but from what i am inferring, he is saying that there isn't a smooth transition from light to dark...so it has a rippling effect. like i said, i don't see it, and this monitor is the shit. try 32-bit color maybe?

That's pretty much what I came out with. Just didn't like the way the blue looked with it was lightened up.

Since we're on a new page...

I think that thing has a boner.

^^nailed it

Yeah, gradient crossed my mind but i didn't think it applied here...that's probably it. Definately seems to be a light to dark thing, especially in pictures with sky views.

in that last b/w photo, a series of three colors repeat themselves, gradually darkening and radiating from the center

just switched over to 32-bit, and i still see it

why does that look like a quality loss after edit to me, or were you going for that?

i got the print company to accept enough RAW files so i didnt have to worry with conversion btw. thanks though

The flickr upload compressed it to 608KB from 7.45MB. I didn't upload full res/quality. Would that be what you're referring to?

Glad you got your prints taken care of. Did they do any color correction from them for you, or was the edits saved in the raw file?

I can't wait til people begin to use HDR tastefully. This is a prime example of WTF /

[Edited on November 20, 2006 at 6:04 PM. Reason : this might not be HDR, but it's pretty indicative of how people fuck it up]
