Sometimes the supplementals on any movie are more often than not going to be 1080i, regardless of the format being HD DVD or Blu-ray. It's pretty much unheard-of to present your main event 1080i on a next-generation format...

^^don't take it so personal, I'm just (still) wondering what movie you're talking about. It's already been established that Pirates 3 is 1080p.

"Update Leaves Early Blu-ray Adopters Out In The Cold?

It looks like early Blu-ray adopters might be getting the shaft when the Blu-ray Disc Association introduces BD Profile 2.0. Advancing technology or not, people that plopped down their hard earned money for those players might not be too thrilled.

When BetaNews asked developers of BD Live whether they were concerned about a backlash from early adopters who supported the format from the beginning, we were told: "They knew what they were getting into." BDA President Andy Parsons echoed that sentiment at the Blu-ray press conference Monday, telling BetaNews that it's normal for new technology to change and older hardware to become obsolete."

so apparently Fox got $120mil for switching over to BR, which then caused Warner to go BR

also, Warner got about $400mil once it switched

You'd have to be an idiot to believe that some sort of payout wasn't involved.

But you'd be even stupider to think that Toshiba didn't make a similar offer. At the end of the day, if this thing was nothing but a bidding war, I can't see how Blu-ray could have possibly been the one to win it. There were many more factors involved than just money.

Uhh

What you wrote was beyond just a typo or usage, you wrote a statement thats flat out incorrect. The press releases, the recent one and the one you linked from two years ago, differ in context and actual text.

While a lot of the drooling apes that post on this board (yourself included), don't think making factually correct statements is particularly important, I happen to believe the opposite and will point out your error(s) as they occur.

Which is about every other post.

"Toshiba Steps Up HD DVD Push Post-CES; Slashes Player Prices
Staci D. Kramer 01.14.08, 4:00 PM ET

Now, Toshiba is fighting back—a week after the death-bed stories, if not obits, in response, first, to Warner Bros.’s embrace of Blu-Ray from Sony and then to Universal’s decision not to date HD DVD exclusively.

The consumer electronics company, which has placed a large bet on HD DVD being at least one of two formats, is slashing prices on is HD DVD players, with some dropping to as low as $149.99, according to AP.

It’s a half-empty, half-full moment for retailers, who could see a sales boost at the same time that some may be faced with price matching from holiday sales.

The headline on the release actually explains the strategy: Toshiba Deploys New HD DVD Marketing Initiatives Based on Strong Fourth Quarter Unit Sales: Mass Market Acceptance Confirms that HD DVD is the Consumer’s Choice for Next Generation High Def Entertainment.”

The theory: play up the acceptance by consumers who have already paid for HD DVD versus those who get it with something else like a gaming console, get more players out there—and dare studios to ignore those consumers.

In addition to the sales cuts, Toshiba will launch “major initiatives, including joint advertising campaigns with studios.”

Toshiba says it closed 2007 with approximately 50% market share and an 80%-plus share of next-gen equipped notebooks sold in Q407.

Yoshi Uchiyama, Group Vice President Digital A/V Group: “While price is one of the consideration elements for the early adopter, it is a deal-breaker for the mainstream consumer.” But will mainstream users pay even reduced amounts for something without full studio coverage?

Online content access: Universal Home Video, Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation SKG report that “an average of 30 percent of HD DVD owners have accessed Web- enabled network features and continue to do so regularly.” Players hooked up to the internet can stream new content, trailers, etc."

if we can get another $99.99 deal, count me in

$100 for HD now (i only have a 720p screen anyway) and guaranteed cheaper (and better) blu-ray later seems like a win

you gotta feel bad for anyone that buys an HD DVD player at this point. Even if they are getting a 'good deal'.

(technophiles who know what they are getting themselves into excluded)

really? if i could get an hd-dvd player and 5 hd-dvds for $100, i'd be happy with that...i don't own many movies, so $20/movie isn't bad when the player's included

^^you would fall into the category of "knows what they're getting themselves into".

And that's fine. It's not a bad deal by any means. I just feel bad for joe schmoe who thinks he's getting a deal, only to realize later that he needs to buy a blu-ray player to watch most of the movies he wants to watch.

^^i'm sure you know better than Toshiba. But they don't seem to think so. Perhaps you should save them the trouble of this marketing strategy and email them your input so they can shut down production of HD DVD immediately.

so lets break this down.

HD DVD is cheaper and has all the features of BD 2.0 that isn't out yet. Interesting.

^i see what you're trying to do, but are there any movies out currently that can't be stored on an hd dvd as opposed to blu-ray? it's a serious question, not trying to put fuel on the fire.

no, but studios are free to make better encodes and/or add more features with more storage to play with.

There have been some recent Blu-Ray exclusives with average bitrates in the mid/upper 40's. And they look stellar.

for example: a movie I'm looking forward to, Amadeus. This is a Warner release. Back in the dual format days, they have to make the movie fit on 30GB unless they want to encode it twice (which they never did). Since it's a long movie, the picture quality would've suffered. Hopefully they re-encode it for Blu-Ray before putting it out.

yeah, we've already discussed that. Not a single movie is currently pressed on that disc, and probably never will (the way things are going right now, anyway).

If HD DVD made the jump to triple layer, so would Blu-Ray. And the storage gap grows exponentially with each iteration.

are as many blu-ray users using the online features of blu-ray as they are hd? that seems like a good indicator of adoption to me and even if blu-ray has more storage, a well planned release can have online features with "limitless" storage. i assume that applies to blu-ray as well...i would think it has the ability to access online content (i'm not 100% though).

^edit the image out

"Warner Brings 'I Am Legend' to Blu-ray, HD DVD
Wed Jan 16, 2008 at 03:00 PM ET
Tags: Disc Announcements, Warner (all tags)

Warner has inadvertantly revealed plans to bring the Will Smith blockbuster 'I Am Legend' to high-def this spring.

Thanks to some promotional materials being shipped to retailers ahead of the official announce, we can tell you that the Blu-ray edition of the $200 million-plus grossing sci-fi smash will hit stores March 18 (day-and-date with the standard-def DVD), to be followed three weeks later by the HD DVD on April 8.

Early word is that the two high-def releases will include both the theatrical and unrated versions of the movie (complete with an alternate ending), though whether seamless branching (or some other interactivity) is involved remains unknown.

There were no further tech specs or extras details available at press time, but the studio tells us that the official media release is coming in the days ahead, so we'll certainly keep you posted.

Warner has set a suggested list price for $35.98 for the Blu-ray and HD DVD versions.

You'll find preliminary disc details for 'I Am Legend' linked from our Blu-ray Release Schedule and HD DVD Release Schedule, indexed under their respective street dates.

We've also set up dedicated threads for Warner's latest in our Forums area -- click the following links to discuss the 'I Am Legend' Blu-ray release and the 'I Am Legend' HD DVD release."
