We should try an onside kick on every kickoff. Wouldn't make that big of a difference.

A touchdown w/ this defense was inevitable

At least there's 2:32 left instead of 0:45

my dire RB situation this past week made me pick up Kevin Smith

played both him and Maurice Morris this week

40 points between the two, but 38 of them are from Smith

If we do ge the number 2 pick (because no ones catching Indy), there'll probably be some teams that want Barkley or Jones that want to trade up. I'm not sure there's any one player that we really need that would make us say no to a package of picks if the price is right.

every single pick/signing we make should be someone that can play on the front seven.

They are so woefully inadequate in both pass rush and run stopping that we could have a Tecmo Bowl Super Bowl secondary with Rod Woodson, Deion Sanders, Merton Hanks, and Darren Woodson and we'd still get lit for 500 yards a game.

Fuck a 2nd WR, 2nd CB, RT, etc we have got to get talent in the front 7.

We have injuries along the front 7 and we're starting 2 rookie DTs. We get the injuries back and add that to the now experienced rookies, our DL should be better next year if we could finally get over this injury plague at DT. Hard to expect any defense to lose it's top 2 LBs(no disrespect to Anderson) and your starting DTs and still be solid. Let the Bears lose Urlacher and Briggs, see how that D holds up.

This draft should tell us a lot about our D going forward. If we really are switching to the 3-4, which has been suggested and is pretty likely, we'll need a true NT(either draft or FA) and we'll need some more LBs. I don't think there is a NT/LB worth taking with a top 5 pick. So if we don't trade that top 5 pick, we should probably go after a CB(perhaps Claiborne from LSU?) or an OT(pair the Kalil brothers up?). Though I could see us pouring more into the offense and taking Blackmon just from a selling tickets perspective.

^^ you're right. We shouldn't think about our roster in the future and instead overreact to current problems. Sounds like a great plan.

You're expecting Mr Trade Next Year's First Rounder for a Second Rounder to start making competent trades?

In Hurney's defense, he's made decent draft decisions. We traded down 10 spots to get Beason in '07 and added a 2nd round pick. We used that on Kalil.

(Of course, the team we traded with --NYJ -- used the Panthers' 14th pick on Darelle Revis. I love Beason, but damn ... Revis would be nice)

Justin Blackmon. Trade down a couple spots and take 'em, spend the rest of picks on linemen

Before the season started, I would have definitely said dump every draft pick into defense because stopping teams is our only shot. But after seeing Cam throw the ball, I say get him as many weapons as possible. If we have a shot at a top flight WR like Blackmon in the first round, we'd be retarded to trade that pick away. A superstar WR can help us a lot more than a star defensive player, especially a tackle/end who usually take years to develop into a useful player. It would take a Suh/Peppers level talent to help our defense as much as a legit #1 receiver can help our offense.

Our current problems include having the WORST defense in the league.

If you think that's not an important issue then you are retarded.

We have a top ~7 offense.

That's worth exactly dick if we can't stop anyone from scoring on every drive.

We need to address the front seven. Don't act like the injuries are irrelevant. If a guy gets hurt a lot he becomes less effective when he comes back and he's more likely to get hurt again in the future.

Maybe we should bring Dan Morgan and Tshimonga Biakabutuka back next year too.

Just because you use your first round pick on an offensive player (and generally a player worthy of a top 5 pick) like the top OT or WR doesn't mean you ignore the defense. You could go defense the next 5 rounds and get plenty of help on that side.

Hurney won't be taking a linebacker or defensive tackle with that pick, rally.

[Edited on November 22, 2011 at 5:40 AM. Reason : the prudent thing to do would be trade down]

We need to hope Matt Barkley, Robert Griffin, and/or Landry Jones has some monster games to end the year. Would be nice for a team to throw us the kitchen sink to move up.

I love Blackmon, but this defense has to be addressed early. If we don't trade down and CB Morris Claiborne is there when we pick, I think it's a no brainer. Having him and Gamble on opposite sides would not suck.

7. Justin Blackmon* WR Okla. State 95
8. Jonathan Martin OT Stanford 95
9. Riley Reiff* OT Iowa 94
10. Luke Kuechly* ILB Boston Coll. 94"

Top 10 prospects according to the nfl draft page on ESPN.

So where do you go? We won't go QB, DE, RB, or ILB. That leaves 3 offensive tackles, a corner, and receiver.

Who would you rather have out of Claiborne, Blackmon, or Kalil out of that bunch?

if i'm picking out of those 3, the one who i think would make the most impact is Claiborne. Munnerlyn would be way better as a nickel corner, and having a guy who can cover opposite Gamble would be nice.

Blackmon would be a great pickup, but with Smith, Olsen, Shockey, Lafell, and Stewart catching passes out of the backfield, we have enough weapons to get by. this year is evidence of that.

Kalil would of course bolster the line, but they are pretty solid this year. i feel like the defense needs so much more help that we would be best served building depth at OL later in the draft or through FA instead of passing up a top-flight CB.

my vote is for Kalil. Having a franchise LT to protect Cam is essential.

Gross seems to be regressing. He was never an elite physical talent and always got by on smarts and technique, but it seems this year he's getting beat for sacks or getting penalties every time I look up.

we'll probably have a top-5 pick. picking OL that high is VERY risky.

Gross has a few years left in the tank, and picking Kalil would ignore glaring needs elsewhere. you want to take the best player available, not draft for position, but when you're the Panthers and your defense is fucked, drafting OL has a minimal impact. Gross slips up a decent amount, but we need an impact player on D.

No one's mentioned it probably because he's not playing horribly. Or because our defense is flat out terrible.

Kalil is intriguing though. I'm pretty sure Gross will be 32 by next season, and he's definitely regressed a bit. Sliding him over to RT and playing Kalil at LT would make for a hell of a tandem, but it does nothing to help our horrendous d

"Draft on potential, and sign help" should be the Panther's mantra for the next couple of offseasons.

I'm confused by people who think that using one single pick on a rookie player will be the answer that the defense needs to be a playoff team all of a sudden. And for the record I would be happy with Claiborne if that is the direction they ended up going. I just think that for such a high pick, you draft potential if the guy has a ridiculously high ceiling (Blackmon).

That defense needs 5-6 new starters for next year. We need to get that get immediate shot of help from ~4 veteran free agents and 1-2 of the drafted rookies getting snaps. That's the only way we get back into the playoff conversation next year. If for whatever reason we didn't do much in free agency and just stuck to the draft it would be, in my mind, wasting a couple years of Cam waiting on that side to catch up.

Panthers TE Greg Olsen just went down hard in warmups when he collided w WR Seyi Ajirotutu going for a pass.

Panthers' trainers taking Olsen into the locker room, walking gingerly. That's not a good development.
