meh, he did go in with both feet...but other than that it looks a fine tackle

and he wins the fuck out of the ball, as others have noted.

It is still a red technically. But he clearly went for the ball with no intent to injure. But if he missed he could have broken that bloke's leg. Hence the red. Rafael does have a mean streak abt him though. Such tackles if missed could end careers.

fair enough....I suppose there's a reason why two-footed tackles are outlawed. he took a risk and got away with it, but that doesn't mean it was a justifiable risk.

Serious Foul Play
Any player who lunges at an opponent when challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or
from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force and endangering the safety of an opponent, is guilty of serious foul play.

it was...he got nothing but ball

this is the key part, and totally open to interpretation.

not really the case here, but I just hate when dudes make awesome two-footed tackles and then get sent off for it. (I think Joleon Lescott made a goalsaving two-footed tackle, squeaky-clean, at some point in the not-too-distant past, and got sent off. sometimes momentum, positioning and so on dictate that you have to go in with two legs.)

I like how you're treating this as if it was done in a vacuum.

Rafael goes in like 30 seconds past the allotted 4 min stoppage time with the ball on the sideline at least 50 yards from goal.

Chelsea WAS NOT trying to score.

In addition, ManU just had a player sent off and the reds were taking cheap shots before that because they got embarrassed and are a pack of sore losers.

Now taking the situation into context, it's impossible to argue that Rafael is not a gigantic piece of shit.

Yep, absolutely no place in football for a two footed tackle like that

I mean, that's, like, the whole point of watching soccer, right?

Eduardo-esque compound fractures : soccer :: crashes : NASCAR

still, though, okay, I didn't realize all this:

meh, I suppose there's a good case to be made for punishing all two-footed challenges with a red card..it just seems a shame, too, from a certain perspective. just another tricky "where to draw the line" situation.

There's no tricky situation. Cut out all the two footed lunging tackles and the sport is better for it.

but then Joleon Lescott can't make brilliant two-footed goal-saving tackles

it's perhaps not as cut-and-dried as you're making it out to be

I mean, when's the last time somebody was seriously injured by a two-footed challenge? I mean, like, give me a characteristic example, a career-ending tackle which illustrates why two-footed challenges should be banned. (I'm genuinely curious...I really can't think of any.)

Jeff, you're doing a really bad job of trolling. Folks like you and I are the ones who've driven quality posters like elduderino away.

I'm trying my best to redeem myself. I suggest you do the same

I'm not trolling...out of my 8789 posts, only like 30-40 (and that's a very generous estimate, probably wildly excessive) have been troll-posts.

(I ran into the same problem when writing columns for Technician, incidentally...I just wrote my honest views, and people thought I was trolling.)

but I genuinely think it possible that some two-footed challenges should be permitted, if they're not reckless. I don't think that's so crazy

Mata to United. Great player but does he fix any of their problems? Isn't he just another Kagawa?

Mata means more as a signing than he does on the field, in my opinion. United gotta show they aren't the bitches they were in the summer.
