The thing is, at the end of the day, they can stick to the core of their argument which is that it's an academic issue. Sure, there was this completely fucked up department that offered high grades and a worthless degree in exchange for little to no course work. It was still the players decision to take those courses. The thing they have to prove is that the athletics department was forcing student athletes into those courses with the sole intent of keeping them eligible when they otherwise wouldn't have been. It's going to be incredibly hard to prove that in any concrete way. Even the way McCants admitted it doesn't necessarily implicate anyone but himself. Really, like the Penn St. thing, the only way the hammer ever comes down is if the NCAA actually wants it to. No amount of new information will change that.

McCants said that he went to Roy and told him he would not be eligible to play the year the won the national championship before the season started. He said Roy said he would take care of it by getting him into 4 no-show classes and retroactively adding an A to the previous summer's transcript. If what McCants said is true, then that completely destroys any argument they had. The problem is proving it was true. Like Denzel said in Training Day, "it's not what you know, it's what you can prove."

I don't think that's how it went down. Apparently he went to Roy the first semester of that year (they were already playing). And the second semester was when he took all of the AfAm classes...the same semester they won the natty.

So I don't know if it really would have mattered for GPA/eligibility reasons...except for the fake that he was taking fake classes in general and probably took those the year before as well.

tl;dr - a history professor at UNC says players denouncing McCants are doing so while hypocritically guarding their own transcripts but Wainstein will be looking at them. Says that Roy's academic director that he brought with him from Kansas and his relationship with Roy/the players should be scrutinized more. He says Roy has to have known, but he plays it off in the media based on the treatment he's used to getting from the press and the lack of journalistic curiosity in the area. He questions whether it will hold out for much longer, or if the truth will be exposed.
