Unfortunately, the quad really isn't that fast

I've been pretty disappointed - the C2D was doing ~1100, and the quad only does ~13-1400.
I've also been experimenting with VMWare and it's been giving trouble where I've had to stop and restart it a lot. All in all folding hasn't been too awesome this week. I've got the C2D in another system now and I'm going to try to get it up and running soon.

I have just started using VMWare as well. I am used to virtualPC. I need some experience quick. It seems as of right now though that it hogs a lot more memory from the host then VPC... But I spent all day yesterday restarting my pc because I was getting familiar with VMWare.

Ahhh sorry i'm going to reinstall the smp client tonight. I was on vacation for a week and i didn't leave it running. Should have 2 c2d machines up tonight. Both will hopefully get 1600ppd+. My apologies for the delay.

Got the quad and the C2D running...the C2D is on Linux, so I'm having to run 2 instances of the regular client. We'll see how that goes. Hopefully, if nothing crashes or has to be shutdown, then I'll be back to almost 3k per day.

I'm not really impressed with the Q6600. It runs really hot for the mere ~200 extra PPD it gets over a C2D for folding, and I'm not going all out for any of the new games that actually utilize multiple threads. If some one really wants one, I'd sell mine for 250, or trade it in a heartbeat for an E6600 + 150 or so. It just seemed like it would be fun to try out and it just didn't turn out to be nearly as cool as I had expected.

So, a couple days later, I think I spoke too soon. Having had it on without any restarts for about 3 days, It's giving me over 2k PPD. A hella lot better than the 1600 I thought I was getting. I renig and retract my bad review of the Q6600.

^^ I've found that PPD per computer can fluctuate 200-400 points depending on what the fahclient decides to work on next after a completed WU. fahmon shows 1 machine getting 1.2k ppd on 1 project (2609) and then 1.6k ppd on another (2651).

So i have a problem. I installed the regular client as a service on 2 computers. They're just pentium 4's but i wanted the extra points. Whenever i run it not as a service it'll complete WUs just fine. When i try to run it as a service, and restart the computer, the fah core comes up and utilizes the entire cpu, but when i go to the .txt log the only thing it says is "core shutdown" or whatever from when i closed the console before restarting. Basically i don't think it's actually doing anything. Is there anything i'm not doing in regard to running it as a service?

are you sure youre looking at the right log? if the last thing you read is client shutdown i suspect youre readin the wrong log.

i would use fahmon to watch the status of your clients, not read the logs.

Shit, just get a 6750 or a 6600 and OC it to 3.0Ghz. It's a lot cheaper if that's all you want.

I watched that video again that Prospero posted. The lady says ps3s are "20 times faster" for folding than pcs. How does that work? How may ppd do ps3s get again?

so here's a question.

seeing as I'm likely going to get a Quad core intel chip for my next machine, how would I best take advantage of it for folding?

Also, can i just run it on one core and specify the core to run on?

yes, but you have to do it manually via task manager (set affinity), unfortunately when you launch the SMP client it just goes ahead and launces four processes, so you'd have to set all of them to the same core

^^ there are some freeware apps to set affinity via command line, but I've never used any of them. the smp client has the best points per wu, but those wus can have a deadline of of 4 days or less. so running the smp client on 1 core might not turn it around fast enough (not sure on that, worth trying out). otherwise using the normal client and allowing large work units will turn around about 500-600 points per work unit and their deadlines are months or more. glad to see you and hobbit are back

^^^Yeah the Q6600 are rather cheap now. You just don't want fah to run on all 4 cores? What i usually do is just shut the smp console down if i'm doing something that requires processing power. Gaming really is the only thing i shut it down for. Doing anything else works fine while running the smp console.

^But yeah if you don't want to run the full smp client you should just run the normal client as a service, and it'll probably get just as much work done as if you ran the smp on a single core. Just a guess though. These guys know way more about it then i.
