vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
I dunno about that. Before expansion and the modern draft structure, the Habs had protection rights on two players per draft year from Quebec. If that had been in place after 1970, Montreal could've claimed (in addition to Guy Lafleur): Gilbert Perreault, Marcel Dionne, Denis Potvin, Mike Bossy, Ray Bourque, Denis Savard, and Mario Lemieux, all without having to use standard draft picks on them. 1/15/2009 12:28:04 PM |

i meant more in terms of an overall lack of success since the league expanded. I wasn't referring to the territorial acquisition of players. 1/15/2009 1:38:28 PM |

Right, but I'm saying that if Montreal still had rights to Quebec, they'd have at least 27 Cups right now. 1/15/2009 1:42:04 PM |

For as long a Toronto Maple Leafs are owned by these "organizations" they will never win a cup.
I hope to high hell I'm wrong, I know I'm not. I will however, continue to live in hockey hell and pull for them...

Every person we talked to in Toronto at bars and such talked shit about how all the corporations owned everything dealing with the team, including the tickets to the game. Real fans in Toronto don't go to games because they can't. They sit at the bars and watch. People were asking us 1. You guys came here all the way from Carolina? and 2. You actually have tickets to the game?
Numerous folks buying us drinks and hoping that Carolina won because they were in the midst of a heavy losing streak and thought a few more losses might shake some shit up so they could make some changes. Needless to say they still managed to beat us.
Looking forward to a better experience in the ACC on Monday. 1/15/2009 3:24:48 PM |

I've been to one game in the ACC. Was in Toronto last winter visiting friends and family and had tickets to a Tuesday night game. Everyone knows Saturday night games are the BEST in T.O. so we tried to get tickets.
Long story short, we had to give away our Tuesday tickets (decent seats) and pay another $400 for.....wait for it....standing room only. Yep, worst seat in the house??? We stood behind it.
That is what real Toronto fans have to do to get into a game.
Yeah, we got crushed 1/15/2009 3:30:10 PM |

We had SRO tickets last year, still paid a decent amount for them during a midweek game. We've managed to snag some seats in 103 for the game Monday. I'm pretty pumped. 1/15/2009 3:32:44 PM |

There is just no way in hell that would ever happen. Grew up in Toronto, have loved hockey because of Toronto, my dog is named after my favorite TML player (Dougie Gilmour FYI...), my family would totally disown me.
In my family, you don't swear on your mother, or to god...you swear on the TML jersey.1/15/2009 3:45:57 PM |

I went to a Canes-Leafs game a few years ago before I moved... Why are there so many Leafs fans in the RBC Center for games?
My girlfriend, who at the time knew next to NOTHING about hockey, asked me why such a shitty team from Canada had so many fans in North Carolina. I didn't know what to say. I mean, I could understand the Rangers having a ton of fans since half of North Raleigh is NYC-metro area natives anyway... but Toronto? 1/15/2009 3:51:01 PM |

It's typically cheaper for Toronto fans (who live in the Toronto area) to fly down and get tickets here than it is for them to walk to the ACC and purchase tickets that typically aren't available.1/15/2009 3:55:05 PM |

Lance Wheeler, a pharmacist who owns the Medicap pharmacy in Garner, is hoping to reopen it in a few months as The Backyard Bistro.
The restaurant will maintain the sports theme that Damon's had, which makes sense given its proximity to the home arena of the Carolina Hurricanes." |

yes - but the Leafs got the first two pics from Ontario. I think the Leafs uck cause of Karma:
In 1997, allegations began to emerge that some employees of the Gardens had sexually abused young boys in the 1970s and 1980s. Martin Kruze was the first victim to come forward—contacting the new owners of Maple Leaf Gardens in 1993, and going public in February 1997. His story of abuses beginning in 1975 prompted dozens of other victims to come forward. In October 1997, Gordon Stuckless pleaded guilty to sexually abusing 24 boys dating back to 1969 and was sentenced to a jail term of two years less a day.[15] Three days later, Kruze committed suicide.[16] An appeals court later increased Stuckless's sentence to five years. He was paroled in 2001. In 1999, former usher John Paul Roby was convicted of sexually molesting 26 boys and one girl.[17] He was subsequently declared a dangerous offender and could have been kept in prison for the rest of his life. Roby died in Kingston Penitentiary from an apparent heart attack in 2001.[18] In 2002, former Gardens security guard Dennis Morin was found guilty of sexual assault, indecent assault and gross indecency for incidents involving teenage boys.[19] Allegations—unproven in court—were also made against other Gardens employees, including Ballard.[20] Several civil suits were settled out of court for undisclosed amounts. In January 2006, the Ontario government filed a $1.5 million lawsuit against Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd., seeking repayment of the medical costs to the province of treating the sex abuse victims.
