It's much simpler than the announcers are talking about.

being up 5 gives you nothing more than being up 4. You're still ahead more than a FG less than a TD. Going up 6 makes a TD only Tie you, not beat you... you force the other team to convert the XP... (which are high % but extra somethign none the less)
