I'm contending it hasn't been the last several years. Gottfried knew that and didn't try to hype up any midnight madness before we proved something on the court first.

Gottfried just tweeted his headed today to a coaches' clinic at DeMatha. I'm sure he'll check in on BeeJay while he's up there and hopefully any other good players at the school.

Anthony Barber is visiting this weekend. He would be huge for us assuming Zo is leaving after this year.

So you'd rather keep Lewis, move Barber to SG and have he and Purvis battle for starting time??

Depth at guard next year:
PG: Barber, Lewis
SG: Purvis, Turner

I like it.

Now to just add some big men to go with our back-court and we'll be in business.

It was a hypothetical complaint, not a real scenario. Plus, in general you should just ignore everything that I say about sports because I am wrong most of the time.

He and Lewis will be in the backcourt together a lot. And it's not like Lewis is going to play 40 min/game anyways.

We need one sharpshooter and as many big men as we can find.

I think Turner and Warren are suppose to be pretty solid shooters. Think Turner actually beat Wood in a shooting competition the team had before the season started. We don't need a pure Scott Wood type shooter, just good enough shooters to keep teams honest. With Barber and Purvis we could have the fastest back-court in the ACC next year.

Forgot about Turner.

Nevermind...go straight after the big men then (although I'd still save a spot for Torian Graham if he could make it here).

From ESPN recruiting team rankings page.

Quote :
"Saturday was a big day when it came to commitments for a few teams. NC State picked up its first 2013 verbal in the form of the No. 11 overall player in the ESPN 100, Anthony "Cat" Barber (Hampton, Va./Hampton), which moves the Wolfpack into the No. 25 spot in the rankings.

Illinois moves up to No. 14 with the commitment of 17th-ranked SG Kendrick Nunn out of Chicago Simeon. Nunn and Illini commit Malcolm Hill (Belleville, Ill./Belleville East) should score a lot of points in John Groce's offense.

But perhaps the biggest announcement came out of Arkansas, where the No. 4 center in the ESPN 100, Moses Kingsley (Huntington, W. Va./Huntington Prep), pledged to the Razorbacks after taking a visit to Fayetteville for the weekend. The commitment gives coach Mike Anderson elite talent in the lane and rockets them all the way to No. 8 in the rankings."

How does a commitment from a 4* player ranked #46 in ESPN rank as a bigger announcement than a commitment from a 5* player ramked #11? Only thing I could think of is maybe they are speaking literally, meaning size wise.

^^ Apparently Barber stole some stuff from Louisville players and got caught, then they took back their scholly offer and Kansas did the same once they found out.

At least thats whats being said.

screw negative comments...fact is we finally have a staff that can recruit and coach to our capabilities as a program...we've had the facilities for a while now and we finally have the other pieces in place.

He has a nice collection of ink for a HS Senior.

I remember not too long ago when we would have died for a 4* PG out of HS. Now we're getting McD's guys two years in a row.

It's always interesting to see what the local papers have to say about a guy's commitment.

http://www.dailypress.com/sports/highschool/dp-spt-anthony-barber-0916-20120915,0,7830935.story

Quote :
"Barber's Saturday commitment seemed to take the Hampton coaching staff by surprise.

"This was 100 percent a decision by Cat and his family," Hampton assistant coach Walter Brower Jr. said. "Not one of the coaches, not myself, not E (Eric Brown), and not my father (Walter Brower Sr.) were involved in the recruiting by N.C. State. It was a decision by Cat and family."

Boo Williams, Barber's AAU coach, believes proximity played a role.

"I thought he might go there because it's close," Williams said. "With the whole situation, I'm not shocked. It's close to home.""

Quote :
"Barber averaged 21.3 points a game last season in leading the Crabbers to their first state title since 1997. He goes into his senior season with 1,530 points, 446 short of Tony Rutland's Peninsula District record."

With all the talent that's come through that area, I never thought Rutland would have the record. If any of you don't remember Rutland, he played at Wake with Duncan and Childress.

Quote :
"Barber's commitment to N.C. State appears to end any talk of he and former Phoebus star Troy Williams going to the same school as a package deal. State is not on Williams' list."

Great pic of him from the recent Nike Global Summit:

So what big men are we seriously after? Randle, Meeks, Anya, Roberson, ...?

If we land one of those guys and either Thornwell or Graham, we'll be in line for another top-10 class.

From DraftExpress:
Quote :
"Recruiting Rankings: ESPN: #11, Scout: #9, Rivals: #9, 24/7: #28

Strengths:
-Good size for a point guard at 6-2, with a 6-4 wingspan
-Incredibly fast with ball
-Outstanding ball-handler
-Great in transition
-Can drive left or right
-Can play pick and roll
-Explosive finisher around the basket
-Good timing on drive. Can play at different speeds
-Can create for others in drive and dish situations
-Can make shots from outside
-Can pull-up off the dribble
-Has developed an in-between game
-Never changes his face. Never looks rattled
-Can put outstanding pressure on the ball defensively
-Gets lots of steals with his quick hands
-Brandon Knight/Ty Lawson-esqe.

Weaknesses:
-Needs to continue to add strength to his 168 pound frame
-Struggles to finish around the basket at times
-Perimeter shooting has improved, but still needs work
-Shooting mechanics aren't great. Release is low, and slow
-Has room to improve as a playmaker in the half-court
-Doesn't possess great leadership skills. Not a great communicator amongst teammates.

Outlook:
Speedster in the Ty Lawson mold. Can get to wherever he wants on the floor, both in transition and in half-court situations. Top-shelf point guard prospect."
