You can add an iphone to a family plan, no problem. and according to this it only extends the contract for that line and not the whole plan. Which I guess means your parents could still boot you from their plan/cancel with AT&T/whatever and you could take over paying for your line alone.

Well that line should be treated like any other line with AT&T, family plan or not. If you're eligible to get a $199 iphone, you can.

I'm not sure where the confusion is.

i was all about getting the new iphone, till the extra costs set in. I'd rather pay $300-400 for the phone and keep the $60 monthly plan that's on the current iphone... fucking att and apple. Gotta shop else where for a new phone and I need a new one within a month.

unfortunately, the vast majority of people buying this thing July 11th will be blissfully ignorant of the fact that this phone is costing them more than iPhone v1.0.

I want to make myself angry about that fact, but I can't. All AT&T is charging is the additional fee for 3G use. You'd find that on any carrier, and I think it's a fair charge, or maybe it was fair of them to NOT charge for the original iPhone, I'm not sure yet

if they are jerking people around with the fees. should i just wait for the SE X1? i'll pay through the nose, but at least i won't be getting robbed every month.

They will also have cheaper, lower minute plans available with the iPhone 3G.

Personally, I would own this phone at a significantly higher price point, as I find the utility it provides me is more than worth what I've been paying.

agreed. i'm sure i could find the answer somewhere else but i'm in the same situation as ^..no 3G where I live. Do I still have to pay the extra $$ for the plan that includes it??

I still think it sucks that AT&T doesn't apply FAN discount to iPhone. That is such a selective policy. And according to the rep I just spoke with, that isn't going to change for the 3G version. Total BS.

Final plan pricing details http://www.informationweek.com/news/personal_tech/iphone/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=208801929

I hate this part
Quote :
"Unlike the original iPhone, text messaging will not be included in the unlimited data plan. Customers can sign up for a $20-a-month unlimited text plan, a $15 plan for 1,500 messages, or a $5 plan for 200 messages. "

First they don't give you 200 text messages any more. Then if you need more than 200 there's a huge jump of $10 from $5 to $15...no $10 option. Squeeze them profits boys

And I think this is a new news:
Quote :
"At an unannounced time after the launch, the handsets will be available without a contract for $599 and $699 for the two models. These unsubsidized prices are close to what analysts predicted AT&T was paying per handset. "

Ok i just noticed something:

Quote :
"As previously announced, iPhone 3G users will have to sign up for a $30 unlimited data plan, compared with $20 under the original iPhone's plan. "

This isn't just the iphone. When i first got my smartphone like 4 months ago i signed up for a 20$ unlimited "smartphone plan". But then i got a call the next day saying AT&T had gotten rid of the "smartphone" plan and switched everyone to the more expensive 30$ "pda plan". I think the main difference was the smartphone plan was for non-touch devices, and the pda plan was for touch devices. I just happened to resign my contract the weekend they were making the switch. So the iphone is just behind the rest of AT&T in switching over to the complete 30$ unlimited plan. So it's not like they did that JUST for the iphone, it was for every phone.

I get all my cable channels + media on my phone using orb for free. I can even dvr stuff using my phone. I'm pretty sure you can do this on the iphone too. Just sucks cause TW's upload sucks a fat one.

tv on phone was suppose to be a joke, but just the other day, some woman asked if there was a such thing as wireless TV... I just and told her that it was fake just to end the conversation.

re: buying the iphone without a plan.

It's actually cheaper to buy it WITH a plan, then just cancel your contract 5 mins later. Forget all the math, but it comes out about $100 cheaper that way.

so it's 200$ to cancel an at&t plan? I would think they would have a way to prevent people from doing that.

just wait for the special "iPhone termination fee", which is sure to cost about $100 more.

^^yeah.

Quote :
"new customers and those eligible for an upgrade will be able to nab the phone for $199 (8GB) or $299 (16GB), while "early upgraders" will have to fork over $399 or $499, all with a two year contract and $18 upgrade fee, of course. The telco says a no-commitment version of the phone will be available for $599 and $699,"

So they won't let someone get away with buying the 199$ iphone with the 2 year contract than canceling for 200$, if the phone is priced at 599$.

And existing customers who are not eligible have to pay 399$/499$ i guess.

why not? i don't see anything that would prevent someone from doing this.

yeah but then people would do that, and not pay 599$ for the phone. I'm sure AT&T would catch on.

Attention iPhone owners! You can now chat with all your Google Talk buddies while on the go. Our new version of Google Talk is designed specifically for the iPhone and runs in the iPhone's browser, so you don't need to download or install anything. Just visit http://www.google.com/talk on your iPhone, sign in, and start chatting. And because it is built for the browser, it will work on today's iPhones as well as on tomorrow's 3G iPhones.

Happy mobile chatting!"

nope

i'm thinking it'll be useful when my wife texts me, then instead of having a conversation over sms, i'll just get a "get on gtalk" text and then chat from there.

That's not quite helpful, because you have to have that particular browser window open to be able to receive messages.

yeah, Apple products can run in the background, like the iPod and the Phone Service or whatever.
And if Google Chat is implemented as an iPhone Application instead of a webservice, then it will be able to receive IMs in the background as well using the iPhone-push service that Apple announced at WWDC

Well if google doesn't release an official application for iphone that supports gchat, I'm sure there will be tons of 3rd party apps that let you do that.

I know Agile Messenger is going to be on the App Store. That supports AIM, GChat, ICQ, and pretty much so every other chat protocol out there.
