Considering that they have stated there will be a ~3 week delay b/w the blu-ray and hd-dvd releases from now on, I would say this announcement is just a matter of semantics (release/ship date). 1/23/2008 2:28:08 PM |

Considering that the article explicitly states that they're releasing HD DVD titles for three weeks longer than they (Warner Home Video) had originally anticipated, I'm going to suggest you work on your reading comprehension.1/23/2008 3:00:52 PM |

Did you really expect more from Fanatik?
I thought that by going over to blu ray i'd be paying less for movies since the combo hd dvd's include a dvd premium. I was sadly mistaken. I'm still paying $30 a movie unless I get a sale or BOGO deal. 1/23/2008 3:43:16 PM |

^^ But hes actually right...not referencing that most recent article. http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/01/11/warners-remaining-hd-dvd-support-will-include-a-three-week-dela/ I Am Legend, for example, will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on March 18. The HD-DVD version will be released on April 8.

Everyone knew there was going to be a gap between the Blu-ray and HD DVD releases.
The news release they just put out says that they will release HD DVD titles for three weeks longer than they had initially intended to release HD DVD titles.

Quote : | "Gartner, the fat lady of research firms, is singing the swan song of HD DVD this morning. Hiroyuki Shimizu, Principal Research Analyst in Japan, says in Gartner's Semiconductor DQ Monday Report that, "Gartner believes that Toshiba's price-cutting may prolong HD DVD's life a little, but the limited line-up of film titles will inflict fatal damage on the format." He goes on to call the recent price cuts "useless resistance" in avoiding the inevitable. What's that, you coyly ask? According to Shimizu, "Gartner expects that, by the end of 2008, Blu-ray will be the winning format in the consumer market, and the war will be over." With 5 of the 7 major studios now backing Blu-ray exclusively, Gartner's certainty on the subject doesn't appear to be much of a stretch." |

yeah and some stores had clearances on the a2 and a3 models. however, this could be making room for new models to be released. well i am just gearing up to get my bluray, once this is over with! but for now i will get as many hd dvd as cheap as possible and in hope that if and when the hd dvd dies that i can get as many titles that i can at clearance prices. 1/28/2008 8:15:55 AM |

Quote : | "The NPD Group attempted to quiet the storm of online scuttlebutt with the following statement:
"As you may have seen, there are attempts being made to portray NPD's weekly sales tracking figures for next generation DVD as a trend. We want to remind you and make clear that it is not accurate to make long term assumptions based on one week of sales -- a cautionary point that NPD has made as well.
"The facts are that during the week that is being singled out, both Blu-ray disc players and software were being given away for free with the purchase of 1080p TVs. It is also important to note that the instant rebate promotions that had previously netted Toshiba's players' MSRPs to $199 and $249 had actually ended on Jan. 5th -- causing an increase in HD DVD's MSRP back to $299 and $399 during that same week. Since Toshiba's retail price move on Jan. 13th to $149 / $199 -- Toshiba is seeing very positive sales trends at retail. This reinforces the fact that price is a significant driver of sales.
"Toshiba's HD DVD players represent a significant value to the consumer and the marketing campaign that just began is proving effective."" |

Must be a hi def weekend sale or something.
They had a bargain bin for blu ray with a ton of movies in it. (well not when i got there most of them were already sold) but they had some pretty decent deals. A lot of fairly new movies like Pirates 1,2,3.

Taking its message to the largest marketing platform on earth, Toshiba has plunked down a reported $2.7 million for a 30-second spot on this year's Super Bowl telecast.
Jodi Sally, VP of Marketing for Toshiba's Digital A/V Group confirmed the purchase to Home Media Magazine, saying "it has always been our strategy to reach HDTV owners, [and] using advertising on football games is just one vehicle." ADVERTISEMENT
Of course, the Super Bowl is more than just a football game; according to a research study conducted by trade group the Consumer Electronics Association and advocacy group Sports Video Group, more than 2.4 million HDTV sets will be sold due to Super Bowl XLII.
Sally said that Toshiba's 30-second Super Bowl spot would highlight the company's HD-A3, HD-A30 and HD-A35 HD DVD player, all of which saw significant price cuts a week after Warner's move to Blu-ray exclsuivity.
At press time, there were no plans for a Blu-ray counter-offensive during this year's Super Bowl, with BDA spokesman Andy Parsons telling Home Media Magazine that he didn't believe a Super Bowl ad would convince consumers that HD DVD will win the format war.

I realize you are misdirecting your anger at me (you really should be mad at Toshiba for failing to be as aggressive w/marketing as they should've been) because I was one of the early proponents of Blu-Ray in this thread... and honestly, I'd pretty pretty upset if I had blown a bunch of money on a format that turned out to be a DUD, but really:

Films co-produced by National Geographic but distributed by other companies will (such as Paramount's 'Artic Tale') will be unaffected.
Warner's move to Blu-ray exclusivity has swayed yet another distribution partner to follow suit, with National Geographic confirming that it too will drop HD DVD support in favor of Blu-ray. ADVERTISEMENT
Distributed under the Warner umbrella along with New Line Home Entertainment, HBO Home Video and BBC Home Video, National Geographic had been format-neutral, releasing only one title thus far, 'Relentless Enemies,' on both Blu-ray and HD DVD.
Although the company says it has no plans to issue an official statement or press release, a spokesperson confirmed for us that moving forward, National Geographic will no longer release titles in the HD DVD format.
The move will go into effect with the company's upcoming release, 'Sharkwater,' which will hit Blu-ray only in April (an official announcement for the title with full details is expected shortly.)
National Geographic's decision comes in the wake of moves by Warner subsidiaries New Line and HBO to shift to Blu-ray exclusivity. BBC is now the only Warner-distributed company to remain format-neutral." |

Just get both and enjoy all the movies. If a person can afford to have this type of thing, I'm sure they can afford both.
Just get a Xbox360Premium+HD-DVD drive and a PS3 and you'll be covered.
You'll then realise that owning movies in HD is pretty fucking stupid if you don't plan on watching them 3x+ Then, you realise that you should probably just rent them. Then, thats its not worth the trouble waiting for netflix or finding BB's pisspoor selection. Then, just watch SD movies on your upconverting PS3 or streaming them to your 360.
Until the 7.1 surround sound starts taking off, this whole HD format is pretty worthless IMO.
