don't bother.
I believe StateCole said it was win all but 3 in order to get a 6 seed, so you do the math from there.
Oh and pg 39

^So we made the playoffs last year with 97 points, and in 6th place in the conference. Right now we have 37 points through 49 games. To reach 97 points (like last year) we would have to win 30 of the remaining 33 games.
Looking at it differently, the Ducks had the least points of any playoff bound team last year with 91. To get 91 points, we would have to win 27 out of the remaining 33 games.
But the East is sucking this year, so the 8th seed could possibly have less than 91 points

A heating up Eric Staal plus a healthy Cam Ward = Oilers get top pick. We need Maurice to send Rod out there for some top minutes and put Gritty Veteran Aaron Ward on the top defensive pairing with Wallin. 1/23/2010 1:49:48 PM |

Pretty much the whole Western Conference is very good this year and all battling for the playoffs, Edmonton may not win but a handful of games from here on out. We have no shot at finishing last in the league this year. As long as we get a top 3 pick, I would be fine. 1/23/2010 1:58:20 PM |
Dammit100 All American 17605 Posts user info edit post |
fuck that, make our lines as follows:
GRITTY VETERAN- Brindy - Cole Larose - Nonstopolous - Wallin Alberts - Sutter - Carson Staal - Walker (while injured) - Cullen
Pitkanen - Samsonov Whitney - Gleason Tlusty - Dwyer
Legace (for every fucking game)
THE FIX IS IN!! 1/23/2010 1:58:49 PM |

Maybe we don't have to realign the lines. Just put our defense out there and not even Cam Ward can do shit.
Maurice must have not gotten the memo about the top pick though, he started the Staal line after it went to 3-1, not the Brindamour line. 1/23/2010 2:34:10 PM |

Quote : | "Any player headed for unrestricted free agency is available in Carolina, but the Hurricanes are getting lots of calls on a player that's under contract for next season.
Joni Pitkanen has another year on his deal at $4.5 million for next season. The Canes like him a lot and are not trying to move him in any way. Yet, the interest from other teams is so high for the puck-mover, one wonders if Carolina will be able to say no before March 3 if the offers are too good to resist. The 26-year-old leads all NHL players in ice time per game, averaging just over 27 minutes. There won't be many top-four defensemen moving before March 3, so the high interest in Pitkanen is reflective of a barren marketplace for that position.
One player who will very likely move if he allows it with his no-trade clause is winger Ray Whitney, as I mentioned last week. To me, Pittsburgh and Calgary are screaming for this kind of move, as both clubs need offensive help and a boost to their power plays.
Here's the thing: He's cheaper to acquire now than on March 3. If the Hurricanes could unload him now, they'd save on their payroll. Come March 3, there's only five and half weeks left on Whitney's $3.55 million salary, so the Hurricanes wouldn't be saving nearly as much. In the meantime, teams will be scrambling for his services that day and the price will go up. Either way, the Hurricanes are hoping to recoup a first- or second-round pick and a prospect for Whitney. We are now 29th place, and I have a feeling we will not be 30th again. Edmonton is going to disappear quickly behind us.
Interesting note this morning that said Whitney will consider waiving his NTC if the team he goes to will sign him to an extension. That would indicate he is not interested in leaving as a rental and signing back here this summer.

I'll be at the game tomorrow night at the Garden. Amazing how a quick vacation between jobs coincided with the Canes being in New York. I didn't think ahead though when coming up, so the Canes gear is in Raleigh, but will probably stop by the NHL Store in Manhattan and get some stuff. I'm sitting in section 133, the side the 'Canes shoot twice, which after reading some of what the Rangers have done lately, I'll probably see most of the action. I love when Rangers fans try to give hell to me at the RBC Center, now I can't wait to see what happens at the Garden. Hopefully it's a good game in that it keeps us in the Hall/Seguin/Fowler sweepstakes.
Where was the Whitney and signing extension tidbit mentioned? What would we want for Pitkanen in trade return anyways? If only we could send him to Boston for Toronto's first rounder, then we could potentially get 2/3 of the Hall/Seguin/Fowler sweepstakes. 1/26/2010 6:02:28 PM |

^Good luck at the NHL store. I was up there right before christmas and it was all Boston and Philly shirts/jerseys (because of the Winter Classic). There was hardly any Canes stuff represented and also hardly any Anaheim stuff (my west coast team). There was, however, a decent number of Whalers merchandise in the store. But the employees were pretty fun to talk to. 1/26/2010 9:00:56 PM |

Quote : | "The prospect of the Olympic roster freeze at midnight February 12th is expected to spark a trade or two before then; however multiple NHL sources describe the current state of trade discussions as 'very quiet.' That said the potential list of players available is growing on a daily basis. Here are the top 10 players expected to be dealt on, or before the March 3rd NHL trade deadline.
1) Ilya Kovalchuk
There is little to no doubt that due to impending unrestricted free agency that Atlanta's superstar and premier goal-scorer will be traded. However, Thrashers general manager Don Waddell says it's too early to officially open the bidding. When it does, Kovalchuk will be a much sought-after commodity.
2) Ray Whitney
Carolina's leading scorer is one of a number of prominent Hurricanes on the block. The 37-year old forward will draw interest based on his scoring touch and the fact he is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.
3) Peter Mueller
The third-year Coyotes forward hasn't developed as expected after an excellent 54-point rookie season. Mueller's name has surfaced in trade talks, however Phoenix is asking for young talent in return.
4) Matt Stajan
Toronto's top-line centre will likely fit comfortably on most teams second or third lines and may fetch a decent prospect or draft picks in return.
5) Alexei Ponikarovsky
Similar to Stajan, the Maple Leafs value the solid 20-goal scorer, but the potential return on a trade may be too much to pass up.
6) Matt Cullen
In a market expected to pay a premium for centremen, the 33-year old Hurricane with proven offensive skills and a Stanley Cup on his resume will attract trade offers.
7) Lubomir Visnovsky
The 33-year old Oilers' defenceman has scored four of his nine goals on the powerplay. After earning $7 million this season, Visnovsky's contract drops each of the remaining three-years, which may attract suitors.
8) Sheldon Souray
The Oilers are aware of the veteran defenceman's willingness to consider any trade to a team included on his list. Even though Souray has yet to score a powerplay goal this season after scoring 12 last year, he is still regarded as an offensive threat.
9) Ethan Moreau
Edmonton's captain has been a good soldier for the Oilers, but he could be swept away by this teams insistence that a culture change is necessary. The fact Moreau's salary drops to $1.75 next season, the final year of his contract, will make him attractive.
10) Marty Turco
The future of Turco and a number of other Stars' players will be determined in the coming weeks. Dallas is looking for a clean start and may start by moving Turco to a team looking for depth in goal in the playoffs.
There appears to be more buyers than sellers as we creep closer to the deadline, however that could change over the next few weeks as teams get a final reading on their post-season chances." |

I don't understand why everyone here is talking like the Canes need to finish last in order to pick first overall. Because of the draft lottery, if they finish in 30th, then they essentially have a 50/50 (48.2%) shot of getting the first pick. The chances obviously go down if they finish worse, but still. The bottom five teams all have a shot at number one, so as long as the Canes don't start fucking lighting it up, then they are still in the race.
Chicago finished in 26th and picked Patrick Kane first in '07. 1/27/2010 9:03:57 PM |
