Someone PM me what Stinger said above. I've read the comics and just want to know what caused such an uproar

I love that we're going to see a horde for the finale. To the dude that mentioned that they can't just hide like they did on the highway: The highway worked because they hadn't been spotted. Zombies tend to hunt by sound and sight. They kept quiet and managed to spot the zombies first. I don't think that'll be an option here because 1) the gunshot is what they're responding to and 2) they probably wouldn't be able to hide before the zombies crest that hill.

No spoilers or anything but just about every comic or book or movie has stated that you shouldnt make to much noise. EVER

Even if the zombies heard the gunshot, if they never saw the group then they likely would eventually lose interest in the noise and ramble onwards. It could be that the horde would wander near the house and not attack it, but the group would have to live in the house and never go outside/make noise until the zombies left.

However, the problem here is that Rick and Carl are in the middle of a field with hundreds of zombies about to crest a hill and spot them. They'll have to run right back to the house, so the zombies will know they're inside the building and spell doom for the farm overall.

Once again, fucking Carl fucked everyone over. If he didn't shoot Shane, then the zombies would have never come over the hill. Rick would have seen Shane zombify in front of his eyes and taken him out silently. The most logical thing they could have done was have Glen/Daryl show up in the same exact fashion and shoot the zombified Shane or something...but no, the stupid kid waltzes over at LEAST a football field in a matter of seconds to confront his dad.

The drama of the scene was cool, but does horrific things to the story.

I didn't read that scene as a confrontation; I read it as Carl tagging along in secret per usual and stumbling upon his father. It would have been very reasonable for Darryl/Glen to come over, but it there'd be no reasonable plot device for the horde's attraction. It's somewhat predictable, but it works.

Question: Was Rick in the know and waiting for Shane to respawn, or was he shocked/grieving and therefore unable to leave? I couldn't tell if Carl's presence simply distracted him from the matter at hand or if he was surprised to see Shane turn.

FUCKING THANK THE LORD SHANE IS DEAD!!! while he contributed valuable survival skills, his acting was like murder and the fucker NEVER CLOSES his mouth

I don't know why it bothered me, but seriously his mouth was open for that entire episode.

Anyway, ^ I don't think he knew, I think that is the moment that he figured out it does not require a bite to turn into zombie (meanwhile Darryl was coming to a similar conclusion) seems like next episode Darryl will become the new 2nd in command and him and Rick will start trading notes and realize they have no clue how the zombie virus is transmitted.

IMHO -- spoiler-free, after-the-fact, yes. it is still relevant. they're still borrowing a good deal from it, as they should. its a damn good book.

Ya, I think he's already assuming parts of that role with mercy killing Dale and whatnot.

Also, was I the only one that loved it when Shane went bonkers around Randall?

it just happens when you die.

like the dude who hung himself in the woods and then turned.

or randall.

or shane.

once you die, you turn. if you get bit, you die, and you turn.

simple as that.

don't you guys think a virus is sort of sensible? Or do you think it's magic?

Didn't the guy at the CDC pretty much say it was a virus and show them that nifty demonstration of how it attacks the brain and what not?

I mean, I'm ok with magic, voodoo, etc (including "simple as that")... but I'm fairly certain they've established that it's some sort of virus or infection or something along those lines.

The guy who hung himself in the woods had his legs eaten by walkers. So you came assume that he turned without being bitten. Not that it really matters though.

Not true, according to the very brief sneak preview for the season finale (don't worry, it doesn't give away much)

^ where does it fit into anything?

My roommate thinks it was suggesting that the zombies have a hive mind because there were several distinct zombies.... and he claims they were some of the same zombies they then showed in the woods.

Personally, I think it was just an editing thing to elude to the fact that Shane was turning and nothing more.

I think the CDC guy was implying it was an ever mutating virus, hence why they could not find a vaccine. And yes, I want to understand how it is transmitted because that is critical IMO. I am starting to wonder if it may be a government-type plot to poison the water, or something ubiquitous, and you have the virus until you die, which is when it takes over the corpse.

I dunno, I am they will make it work somehow, but that for me is what I am waiting to find out.

I agree that the virus or whatever is dormant in everyone and only comes active once you die, but does anyone remember the corpse in the truck where Carl found that stash of machetes, axes and knives early in this season? Why hadn't he turned? I didn't notice any head wounds. That's the only inconsistency I can think of surrounding that theory. Think back to the solider in the tank in Ep 1. He didn't seem to be bitten (I don't think) and holed up in the tank...probably to die of dehydration, but he turned and came at Rick when he entered via the hatch.

i hated the whole CDC plot line. i don't think we're supposed to know what causes it. it happens, it's pervasive, and now the characters have to live in that world. i don't see them diving into what caused it any more than they already have. but who knows.

I was just disappointed that the CDC was just a single episode stint, for me this is the most intriguing aspect other than the survival skills that arise after the walker apocalypse.

I'm thinking that it's space aliens that have surrounded the planet with a soul net that prevents souls from leaving when they die, thereby turning them into zombies.

I'm just getting the sense that people are reaching for a "virus" explanation because "magic" is distasteful for some reason. Nevermind that dead people are popping up and rampaging.

I think it's because one or two zombie servants is usually considered voodoo whereas a zombie uprising has almost always been a viral thing.

I agree completely, seems like they really pulled it together for the second half. Although, I'm not sure how things will pan out with both Dale and Shane gone, they created a lot of the tension that kept things interesting. I hope Darryl and T-Dog get more screen time and I'd like to see more Andrea and less Rick's wife and Carl.

I think people are open to the magic thing just as much as virus... well, i am anyhow. But the show has leaned toward a medical reasoning. They were at the CDC where the guy was talking about cures and what not. And how the french were the closest or some junk. I don't think those cures had anything to do with magic, voodoo, etc. There is absolutely NO reason (in the canon of the show) to think magic. There is some reason to think virus, disease, etc. considering scientist seem to think they were on the right track. That doesn't mean that it is a virus/disease, but there's a least some reason to lean that way.

And what is so irrational about a virus spreading rapidly? there have been plagues, there are all sorts of ways to transmit crap. I'm not saying it's not an exaggerated example, but there is something there as a basis for the premise.

Think about chicken pox... it's extremely contagious. The virus, after appearing in the form of pox, lies dormant in you for the rest of your life. It can then later show itself as something different (shingles). High rate of contagion, lies dormant for life, and expresses itself in two different ways.... the idea of this being a virus is clearly just as irrational as it being magic.

maybe because there are viruses already in existence that can be dormant for a long time in the human body, science has yet to prove magic. For me, there is a fine line between acceptable magic and then legend of the seeker level of magic, and personally I would be happier with a realistic medical approach, creating a realistic scenario.

Fun fact, when Kirkman originally pitched the idea of the Walking Dead to the comic book publisher, the only way to get them to agree to it was to say that the zombie infection was the cause of aliens using it to weaken Earth before invasion.

Okay, this should be pretty clear from the clues:

1) The virus is airborne and is dormant until you die. You have to be alive to pick it up, obviously. So the guy that died in the tank was probably dead before he picked it up. He likely rode into Atlanta in a tank and then died in the tank and never was in or near contact with any zombies, and therefore did not pick up the virus. Similarly, the guy in the truck likely suffered a similar fate. I thought I remember seeing a bullethole in his head but I can't remember that clearly so this is a solution to that question as well.

2) Getting bitten or scratched or whatever forces the virus to take over early. Hence Jim, from early season one. He was bitten but did not die due to blood loss or anything like that. He slowly turned without dying.

My theory is that the CDC guy told Rick about this and the reason Rick was waiting around Shane's corpse was because he wanted to test it. It would be difficult to put a bullet in your friend's head immediately after you stabbed him so he wanted to make sure that it was necessary before he did so. Makes sense to me.

Refresh my memory on how Andreas sister died. I remember Andrea put a bullet in her head. But was she a zombie, or not dead?
