The right kind of complaining on the sideline might get the refs to watch for something more closely.
The wrong kind of complaining on the sideline will get the refs to ignore something completely.

Quote : | "What really happened here is that Doeren, not Fisher, broke a rule. That rule is that major college coaches should never, ever be candid. But for a brief shining news cycle, it was nice to see an element of truth pierce the fog. College teams are increasingly going to fast-paced offenses to keep defenses off balance and tire them. Defenses are responding by slowing the clock whenever and however they can. It’s a perfectly sensible and legal response, but not an honest one....
...Maybe Florida State wasn’t faking injuries, but it’s happening. As ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit told Al.com last year, “No one is talking about this, but look for more fake injuries by the defense. I’ve talked to defensive coaches. These guys are actually practicing faking injuries.”" |

I mean all they have to do is have a guy or two that is the most easily replaced on the defense be told if the guys are getting tired you need to have "cramps" then you dont even have to let the training staff in on it. They come in, stretch you out, you limp off to the sideline while your buddies get to rest, they replace you with a capable guy, and a few plays and some gatorade later you are fine and ready to go.
Unfortunately, unless you have a case where its obvious like when a signal comes in and three guys fall down its pretty hard to enforce. Until the rules change expect this to happen more and more to us. 10/1/2014 10:57:58 AM |

Quote : | "N.C. State football coach Dave Doeren spoke his mind Saturday and Monday when he criticized both the officiating and some of Florida State’s defensive actions in his team’s 56-41 loss.
In doing so, Doeren joined a group of area college coaches who built reputations for occasionally having the gumption to say exactly what they were thinking.
In alphabetical order, these are just a few such coaches: Lou Holtz, Mike Krzyzewski, Steve Logan, Dave Odom, Dean Smith, Steve Spurrier, Jim Valvano and Roy Williams...
...But I’ve got Doeren’s back on this one. What’s wrong with a head coach expressing his opinion? If it’s off-base, it’s off-base and that can be debated. But gag orders and mandated apologies, whether they’re ordered by schools and conference or even self-imposed, rarely benefit anyone.
It struck me as amusing Tuesday when Doeren backed away. Fisher started the season by hotly criticizing The Citadel’s blocking tactics, but a few days later said, “They have a great program. They don’t teach (chop blocking).”
Totally lost in the Doeren situation is a point he was trying to make when mentioning that Seminole injuries and/or dives served to stop the clock or at least slow State’s nonstop offensive flow. It’s a subject worthy of discussion by the rule makers, too..... ... " |

Before the season started I expected us to be at 4-2 at this point, and we're 4-2. I didn't expect to blank against Clemson, but I also didn't expect to show up so well against FSU, so I'll call it a wash. It's hard to be mad at a HC when he's right where you thought he'd be at this point in the season.
The real test will be to see what he does with the rest of it. I expect us to make a bowl, so let's see how we get there. 10/5/2014 8:07:32 AM |

Death Valley is the anti Fsu game at the Carter. The overreaction to yesterday's shitshow is as uncalled for as ignoring the joke that his recruiting has been this year because we lost by two touchdowns to a good team. This year will be judged on the game next week, the GT game, Syracuse, etc 10/5/2014 11:55:39 AM |

I would love to fire Doeren, but like others have said, who the hell is going to replace him? Last time we brought in a seemingly good coach with ToB, but he was just riding on the coat tails of Matt Ryan, just like Amato did with Rivers.
In other words we are stuck with Doeren until another coach wants to leave where they are or we offer the money needed to get one to leave. For how much money we put into facilities, you would think we can afford a good coach. We used to be the "football school" of North Carolina and now we can't even hold on to that.
The basketball program on the other hand is headed in the right direction. 10/5/2014 9:27:11 PM |

^^depends. if he replaced him after two or three years like he should have and we actually played defense from then on out, it's difficult to measure the impact. could've changed recruiting, could've played for the championship/won the championship the year maryland came back against us, etc.

Last year we had an awful QB situation and bad defense. This year we have a much better QB situation and still have a bad defense. Biggest issue with defense is that the best players are really young - we'll get much better in the next 1-2 seasons. Even with that, I still look at Huxtable a lot like Archer at this point. We keep getting burnt and we've done nothing scheme-wise to try and switch it up.
We may not have the personnel/experience yet, but its not like our coaching on that side of the ball has really done much to inspire confidence either. 10/6/2014 11:58:51 AM |

^^Well, sure. If you're saying TOB would've gotten last year's team to 5-7 I won't argue with that. I'm not 100% sure I buy that, but I don't think it's incredibly far-fetched. I'm glad we fired him when we did. It was the right move. It remains to be seen whether or not hiring DD was the right move. But canning TOB was.
Again...TOB wasn't that good. We had two future NFL starters under TOB and the best he ever did was a fucking 5-3 ACC record and a bowl win over West Virginia. 10/6/2014 1:26:35 PM |
