For my leather motorcycle gloves I wash it in a sink full of water with a cap full or two of vinegar, rinse very well and condition after. That gets rid of all sorts of nasty if you want it gone ASAP. If you are afraid to wash it you're going to have to seal it up with something to absorb the smell like activated charcoal (but it stains so be careful).

I do make it harder than it needs to be, but it's not from concern about fashion. It's about me and my feelings and stuff. For the most part, I understand what is conventionally preferred, or I feel confident that I can find out, but doing things in a way that I can feel good is the challenge. And I don't just mean physically comfortable...there's a whole thing with my emotional attachments to certain things and blah, blah, blah.

I also struggle with distinguishing between what I see and what other people see, and my level of care for what other people see/think changes dramatically.
