When you're dealing with a zombie invasion, crowd == death. There is bad traffic and tons of people at Walmart on a normal day. Things would be a thousand times worse in event of a zombie invasion. It's easy to imagine that a bunch of people would have the same idea as you. Even if they aren't thinking of holing up, quite a few would want to loot some guns.
I was thinking a high school might be good, especially an old one. Some of them have fences or walls. Even better would be an old Civil War fort if you happen to be near one. They're a ready-built fortress and are usually remote. Fort Macon comes to mind. Supplies are a big problem though. You'd have to pick some up.

^Well, as I said earlier, Wal-Marts are liable to empty out fairly soon. It's not conducive to zombie congregation -- too bright, too open. If everyone in the place gets zombified, they'll leave in short order. Alternatively, if there's panic in the streets, it might start out empty (although the presence of looters is somewhat more likely). Yes, there's a point where Wal-Marts would be unacceptable, but afterwords it has a lot going for it.
Fortresses aren't exactly common, they're awfully big (hard to maintain internal security), and nowadays they have more than one or two entrances. Most high schools nowadays would be a bitch to defend, but a private or old school with walls could be made to work.
The more I think about it, the less likely I believe it is that we will find twenty suitable females from TWW, so probably we'll just have to resort to each male grabbing two girls that he thinks can be convinced to have sex with him on his way to the bunker. That said, still accepting applications.

Look, we've covered the island/ocean scenario several times...
Those places are great in theory, but once the shit hits the fan you won't be able to get to them. The roads will be jammed with abandoned cars, you probably don't own or know how to operate any aircraft, and covering half the bloody state on foot would be suicidal.
A few of the popular tourist islands on the ICW might work if the waterway was sufficiently deep (never heard of swimming zombies). Bridges are more difficult to seal than doors, but you have the entire population to help you do it. Still, unless you happen to be on vacation when the zombies atatck, this is at best a fantasy. 4/16/2005 11:36:40 PM |

^^You mean a house exactly like mine?
Two stories, full basement, no neighbors within three quarters of a mile, heavily wooded, comes with guns. Farms nearby with food. All in all, damn near ideal except for a couple of minor things --
1) Not room for a lot of people 2) Water comes from a well, so when the power goes you have to walk a fair distance to the creek.

These girls have to give consent? How about if we pick ones we know we can physically dominate. I figure that way I'll have to spend much less time outside and have a greater chance of getting to safety.

I still think Walmart is too open on the inside. You have nowhere to retreat (except maybe the roof). Like I said before, it would be possible to build your own walls/barricades, but why bother when you could be somewhere that has a structural advantage?

Uhh it's a lot easier to just grab a chick and run than it is to strike up a conversation and somehow get around to the part where you ask "Hey, would you like to maybe let me impregnate you?" before you're overwhelmed and killed by the attacking force

Fair point about the Wal-Mart, if the first line of defense fails you might be fucked. But the reason you bother is because there's a shitload of supplies there. Guns. Ammo. Food. Everything. It's Wal-Mart, for fuck's sake. Best case scenario, you loot Wal-Mart on the way to a better location, but you work with the time and the shit that you have.
Only problem with prison is that it's full of prisoners, who either aren't very nice to you, or who have been zombified.
And Mr. Price, what you'd probably want to do is talk to a few ladies now. Be straightforward: "Look, I know this sounds strange, but if zombies were ever to attack would like to be in a safe, fortified location with me? All you'd have to do is have my babies, and ignore my fucking this other girl." That way, when the shit hits the fan, you grab 'em and go.
Alternatively, you could just grab anyone you'd be willing to fuck and talk them into it in the fort. Time is somethign we'll have plenty of.

^Back-up power? For a while. Probably not too long.
And killing all the prisoners would be taxing in every sense. You'd be drained morally, physically, and ammunitionally. Then you have to get rid of the bodies. 4/16/2005 11:52:17 PM |

Army bases don't have great barriers -- fences, mostly. They'd hold up for a while, but not too long.
Now, the more extensive bunkers associated with some bases would work, but I suspect the military would already have those quite full. 4/17/2005 12:04:21 AM |

How much time are we talking about? Are we assuming that we'll have time to relocate, or are we supposed to make due with what we have here on or around campus? This might be answered somewhere previously, but I can't read very well so I might have missed it. 4/17/2005 12:06:28 AM |

Assume a pretty bad scenario -- we're stuck on campus. That's why we've been toying around so much with a dorm setup. 4/17/2005 12:15:23 AM |
Nerdchick All American 37009 Posts user info edit post |
University Towers would make a good zombie fortress. It's nine floors with few entrances. The windows are all shatterproof and don't open. Best of all, the cafeteria is on the top floor. I used to work there and found it to be very well-stocked. They have an entire room with a shitload of dry goods, as well as two walk-in coolers with tons of meat. You also have a full kitchen. Even if the power goes out you can still use the pots and pans.
It's short on tools and building materials, unfortunately. There might be janitor's supply closets somewhere.
You could also use the furniture in the rooms as barricade material. Dorm furniture is plentiful and easy to move. Then again that would be the case with any dorm, not just UT.

I like somewhere on central campus. Alexander would probably work well, it's right near 2 C-stores, is something like 3 stories high, is near a parking lot and road, and has a tunnel entrance within 20 feet of its northern tip. Also, the windows open and I'm not sure this is true in all other dorms. An open window would be a good spot to in some way attack any zombies below.

Opening windows isn't a problem. On the first floor an open window is a liability. And for higher floors you can always smash them out if you want to shoot zombies.

problem with the syme c-store (and im assuming most of the others as well) is that they don't store any extra food. also, when the power goes, all the refrigerated stuff goes soon after. i get the impression you're looking for a sizeable group, at least twenty, for purposes of repopulating the campus so one c-store most likely won't support your group for the amount of time it takes for the zombies to die off (2 months? 3 months?), you'd need the quantity of food stored at, say, a cafeteria for that.
another important question, what is considered a reliable water source? obviously bottled water, but anything else could possibly be contaminated within a week or so of impact, and you won't be getting fresh city water at all once the power goes. 4/17/2005 12:32:23 AM |

syme isn't close enough to clark to make it without an armored vehicle, plus with all the glass it's likely to be compromised when you get there. though the c-store does have drinks (good idea, hadn't thought about that) the food the c-store offers is primarily dry goods. so more fluids will probably be needed than normal, i think. room food will offer a similar problem. anyway, id rather go to ut, sounds perfect to me. 4/17/2005 12:40:13 AM |

I just watched the new DoD a couple days ago, so it's fresh on my mind...
They suggested that zombies were returning to places where they have memories of (the mall). So I think a nonstore would be the best bet at this point. Granted we would need to find a food source.
If something broke out, I'd stay at my apartment for now to let things chill down a bit (second floor with deadbolt metal door). I have enough food for 2-3 weeks here. Then when I deemed it necessary, I would climb down from the balcony/desk and get in my car which is currently parked pretty close and drive to a new desintation (car held up pretty well... I would be driving 2-3 weeks after the initial occurance, so I think the roads would be drivable). 4/17/2005 12:41:06 AM |
