Another important signing...

Quote :
"The Panthers also have agreed to terms with Tennessee center Justin Hartwig, according to several league sources. Terms were not immediately available.
Hartwig could be crucial to a smooth transition on the offensive line. At 27, he’s younger than veteran Jeff Mitchell, whose time with the Panthers appears to be over.
Hartwig has been a starter the past three seasons, and has developed into a technically-sound blocker. Adding an experienced player will be helpful, because the Panthers are planning to start second-year pro Evan Mathis at right guard.
"

http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/sports/football/nfl/carolina_panthers/14076446.htm

This guy looks like he's going to be a solid starter and somewhat of an upgrade over Jeff Mitchell. If the cost wasn't too much I'd say this was another great offseason move for the Panthers.

So, with all the QB shuffle around the league, the draft is also getting shuffled.

Lendale White is sliding down the boards, and our chances of landing him are increasing. I've even seen a few mock drafts from the "experts" showing that he is down to our neck of the draft.

That would be bad ass.

id be really happy if we could get lendale white somehow...

we need a back with fresh legs and i think he'll enter the league with a chip on his shoulder because he's still not really a big name...

He would definitely be a good counter with Deshaun Foster and that would move that fat ass from Louisville into a third string role and he could be fresh when Foster invariably hits the DL midseason.

"Panthers sign safety Williams
March 14, 2006

Panthers.com

The Carolina Panthers have signed unrestricted free agent safety Shaun Williams from the New York Giants, the team announced Tuesday. Williams has played in 92 career regular season contests with 60 starts and has produced 413 tackles, 13 interceptions and 4.5 sacks in eight NFL seasons, all with the Giants.

In 2005, Williams , 29, appeared in eight games prior to being placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. He finished the year with 16 tackles and two interceptions.

After being selected in the first round (24th overall) of the 1998 NFL Draft, Williams (6-2, 218 pounds) spent his first two seasons at nickel back and the next two at free safety before moving to strong safety in 2002. He started 58 consecutive games from 2000-2003 and made at least 85 tackles each year from 2000-2002, including a career-high 108 in 2002.

Williams helped the Giants reach Super Bowl XXXV following the 2000 season when he started all 19 regular season and postseason contests. He was named All-Pro by Sports Illustrated after registering 85 tackles and establishing career bests with three interceptions and 13 passes defensed.

A native of Los Angeles, Williams played at UCLA where he earned first-team All-Pac 10 honors as a senior.

What do you say to the people who are obsessed with the team having a receiving tight end? Derek, Raleigh, NC

I think what people might not understand is that there are five eligible receivers in the game. By virtue of the way we move people around, the tight end gets into one of the receiving spots sometimes, but his major job is as a blocker in pass protection. He still has to be effective for us in certain downs and distances and field positions, though. Our tight ends have been that way. When they have gotten down in the red zone, they have been much more effective. We don't feature one in particular, but our tight ends usually end up with about 45-50 catches between them. I think we do a pretty good job. We just don't have one who is going to catch 90 balls because we're not set up that way. There are teams in the League who have tight ends who catch that many, but if you look closely, you'll see they don't have a wide receiver who catches that many. If our tight end was the guy who was best suited to make big plays down the field, then we'd give it to him. Our best asset was Steve Smith last year, Muhsin Muhammad the year before, and Stephen Davis the year before that. We're going to give them the ball.

"

q and a with Dan Henning.

This makes it seem like the panthers aren't even thinking about a TE in the draft.

Only 3.2 mil per year for one of the best possession recievers in the game.

Thats a steal if you ask me.

I'm not sure that you'd want a RB who was listed at 245+ coming out of college to beef up much more.

Hopefully Shelton can stay healthy and run between the tackles without getting knocked on his ass the way Foster does. If not, then we need a true inside runner in a big way.

Smitty vs. Chad Johnson!

Guaranteed to see some fines issued for end zone celebrations in that one!

it sorta sucks that the last few sunday night games aren't set. it will be harder to go to a panthers game on those weekends if they suddenly switch it.

How much lead time are they supposed to give before they make the decision?

this dude thinks the panthers are gonna take Laurence Maroney

Quote :
"Don't make the mistake of assuming that by re-signing DeShaun Foster the Panthers are out of the running for a first-round running back. Foster's injury history demands the position receive more attention. Maroney looks like a steal this low in the first round."

the whole mock draft is interesting to see what he is predicting other teams will do.

http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/story/8289755 - this guy says maroney too

http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/story/8289753 - lendale white

http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/story/8303830 -Gabe Watson, DT, Michigan

i guess i am the only person worried about LB's

^i dont know a lot about adams except he was great at Clemson

but the pick makes me feel a lot more comfortable about the draft...now if theres a stud OLB at our pick we can take him or take a stud RB if he's there

also he's good insurance for potential Morgan injuries

did Philly play a 4-3 last year like the Panthers? or does he have to adjust from 3-4 to 4-3?
