m$ will do better than many of you think... $'s a big reason why.
ps3 looks awesome, especially graphics, but who wants to pay, and they're clearly just copying what nintendo and m$ are doing... kinna takes the allure of originality out of it
i'm lookin forward to the Wii, but I'd like to see normal controls as well as the sensor-based controls, because every now and then i want to be a lazy couch potato and just move some thumbs 5/9/2006 4:55:20 PM |

you know, i really don't care about innovation
i don't know what the big deal is about "doing it first" and "oh no- they copied us!"

nintendo 64 rumble - battery-powered, one engine, replaced memory card
sony's first dual shock - not battery-powered, two engines, no memory card replacement
how did nintendo counter in the next console?5/9/2006 5:54:44 PM |

analog-> actually atari did that, but it sucked. then GCE did the "vectrex" which was pretty good rumble->pc's had force feadback and rumble effects in their joysticks and controllers before any consoles wireless->I don't hear you giving microsoft a hard time for this one... this is an obvious technology to impliment, oh and logitech unveiled the first cordless peripheral in 1984. motion-sensing-> this has been tried before but as yet not implemented well. they're both just copying older technologies and making them better.
The whole accusation of copying is usually a pretty thin one at best. Obviously good innovations are going to be seen for what they are and implemented wherever it makes sense. All those "innovations" you mentioned were implemented either by other consoles first, or by the PC. They just weren't ready for the console. What nintendo did was get the timing of that right. That's not innovation, just good sense.

yea, what an innovation, POWER from a cord instead of a battery.
n64 had to do it the way it did bc the rumble wasnt concieved when the console was launched
^but nintendo is the one making the gamble, mass producing and applying the tech

to be fair, it is called good business sense. if ppl will buy it without you having to dump the money into r&d, go for it. they've developed their brand well so far. i loved the ps1, ps2 was meh, but they sold a fuckload. good for them. 5/9/2006 6:01:46 PM |

Yeah, and I mean you can't say nintendo hasn't been good for the console industry and hasn't pushed the technology sometimes.
You COULD argue that a controller port that can provide extra power is an advance
Which of the next next gen consoles use usb ports for controllers? The PS3 does, what about the 360? I know it has usb ports, but does it use them for the wired controllers? Anyways, I'd call using standard interfaces like usb and bluetooth to be an innovation, as far as consoles are concerned. I hate proprietary connectors.

Well I'm sold on the Wii. Wario Ware, Metroid Prime, and Super Mario Galaxy all have me excited. And Zelda: TP will probably be the best game to come out this fall. My only concern is the aforementioned problems with movement. The preview of Wario Ware makes it sound like you'll be spazzing out all over the place. The Metroid Prime preview at IGN says that it doesn't take much to move around though.
Sony's conference was disappointing. I thought they'd at least have some new info on MGS4, DMC4, or at least a new platformer from their stable of franchises.

I was having doubts yesterday but I think I'm sold on the Wii now too. Besides all the first-party games, Red Steel realllly caught my eye. So did Disaster: Day of Crisis (I know that it's first party too - but it looks so freakin sweet from the 3 seconds I saw of it I had to mention it). 5/9/2006 6:41:16 PM |

The Wii sports games are clearly more of a tech demo than anything. If they were full-fledged games they wouldn't be sold together. 5/9/2006 11:51:33 PM |
Noen All American 31346 Posts user info edit post |
looking at ALL the Wii launch title demo's and video, I'm REALLY disappointed. The games will definitely be fun, but they haven't pushed the graphics or physics AT ALL. It all just looks like gamecube games with a new controller.
ESPECIALLY when you compare Wii to say the 360 or PS3 tech demo's, it's seriously lacking.
Maybe if the Wii ends up being a 200 dollar machine, I could see some justification, but I'll bet they roll out at $299 which is going to kill it in the US. 5/10/2006 3:11:35 AM |
