If you went by nielsen ratings seems like season 4 and season 5 were peak x files. The season premiere does like 3 million better than prior season finale. You can tell the buzz was growing as the show went on

Totally get the MOTW thing. I do kind of hate the multiple episode arcs or mythology, etc

The one off episodes are typically more digestible. The few episode stories end up so little payoff. Its like the unsatisfied feeling of one episode, except takes 3 times as long to get there
