^how could you possibly ignore the politics of that article? i had to stop reading because it was soooo partial to its agenda. the author very clearly tried to tie liberalism with soccer. that is stupid. it only takes a handful of conservatives who like soccer to disprove that argument. and it was the entire basis of his argument.

and i still think it's stupid. you can respond or not respond, i don't really care.


and the "quotes" from foreign journalists all fall along the line of "yeah, soccer isn't popular in the US. I don't really know why" so those don't really add any value to the article.



linking soccer to liberalism is as stupid as linking baseball to conservatism. they're sports. some people like 'em, some people don't.

soccer is kinda like the Olympics to me. once every 4 years is awesome and i will watch every minute of it, but more than that is too much for me.

I've always been curious - I know foreign sports like tennis and hockey have never been popular either but why isn't there a crusade against them like there is for soccer? It just seems like people go out of their way to hate on it.

anybody can grab a random friend and go out and play a good tennis match

you can't just grab a buddy and play one-on-one soccer

tennis is more playable


and yes, there are some people who outright HATE hockey

I just hate it when someone says you are stupid for enjoying one particular sport just because that person doesn't enjoy the game. It's kinda like music who the fuck cares what you like I may think country music is almost unbearable to listen to but that doesnt make someone else wrong for enjoying it. That being said I plan on watching every single match this world cup

How is this relevant to anything? Every major sport in America is a team sport that you can't just go out and plan one-on-one. At least in the sports intended form.

soccer doesnt get pushed on America any more than hockey does or any other sport. just because people are putting it in their magazines and advertising for it, they wouldnt push it if it wasn't going to make them money. everybody seems to have this paranoid "stop pushing soccer on us" complex...i really dont give a shit if you watch it or not, its just annoying when unprovoked people bash it.

Once every four years, there's a media blitz. In the time of the year when the only other thing going on is baseball so it's not exactly stealing attention away from anything.


In between that, soccer gets the same run on ESPN that stupid shit like billiards and poker get. There are never articles (hell, even box scores) in newspapers or magazines. Most games are limited to a soccer-specific channel or at 7:30 in the morning or 2:30 in the afternoon once a week. How exactly is soccer forced on you?

Yeah maybe soccer doesn't get pushed on the masses as much as some other sports all of the time, but you're kidding yourself if you don't think it gets pushed on the masses more than other sports in the time leading up to the World Cup

Maybe I'll give a shit about how important soccer is to the world when people in China and France and Germany give a fuck about NC State football and basketball...THE WORLD DOESN'T REVOLVE AROUND CHINA AND FRANCE AND GERMANY, right God?

How about two weeks of Super Bowl hype with like the same 3 fucking stories that we hear over and over and over again on every single sports radio show, tv show, and sports website? NO/Katrina, Bettis/Detroit, Patriots/Undefeated, etc.

March Madness is hyped up by people that know jack shit about basketball. I mean, damn, can we talk more about brackets and office pools and loss in work productivity?


Every sport is hyped up too much. It just so happens that you like one sport and not the other so it annoys you more.

The only reason for that is because they want ratings. You should levy your complaints at broadcasters instead of soccer fans.

The world cup IS the most watched sporting event in history, just not in the US. Each four years they try to give it another shot to see if people want to watch.

American exceptionalism is the theory that the United States occupies a special niche among the nations of the world in terms of its national credo, historical evolution, political and religious institutions, and its being built by immigrants. The roots of the belief are attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville, who claimed that the then-50-year-old United States held a special place among nations, because it was the first working representative democracy.

The theory of American exceptionalism has a number of opponents, especially from the Left, who argue that the belief is "self-serving and jingoistic," that it is based on a myth, and that "there is a growing refusal to accept" the idea of exceptionalism both nationally and internationally.

The basis most commonly cited for American exceptionalism is the idea that the United States and its people differ from other nations, at least on a historical basis, as an association of people who came from numerous places throughout the world but who hold a common bond in standing for certain self-evident truths, like freedom, inalienable natural and human rights, democracy, republicanism, the rule of law, civil liberty, civic virtue, the common good, fair play, private property, and Constitutional government. Researchers and academics, however, generally use the term "American exceptionalism" to strictly mean sharp and measurable differences in public opinion and political behavior between Americans and their counterparts in other developed democracies.

Persons who are not supporters of the theory of American exceptionalism often argue that it is equivalent to jingoism and nationalist propaganda. In their arguments, they often compare the US to other countries that have claimed an exceptional nature or destiny. Examples in more recent times include the UK at the height of the British Empire, as well the USSR, France and Nazi Germany; while many historic empires such as Ancient Rome, China, the Spanish Empire and a wide range of minor kingdoms and tribes have also embraced exceptionalism. In each case, a basis was presented as to why the country was exceptional compared to all other countries, drawing upon circumstance, cultural background and mythos, and self-perceived national aims.
