And everyone in San Diego, players and staff alike, when we peppered them with questions on and off the air, seems confident in the kid in charge of driving this first class car — Philip Rivers. When you think about it, is there a more important player in the NFL? If he is anywhere between efficient and explosive, the Chargers are a playoff team. If Rivers plays like a pseudo-rookie in his first go around as an NFL starter, San Diego will have to scratch and claw towards a .500 record. The ultra-popular and effective Drew Brees wasn't brought back this off-season, for reasons, according to general manager AJ Smith, that ranged from Brees' health, to a discrepancy over the veteran's worth, to simply the presence of Rivers waiting in the wings. On a picture perfect afternoon in San Diego, two things were made very apparent. First, this team, even the players who cherished their time with Brees, has rallied around Rivers. The third-year quarterback, a starter for the first time, has commanded respect with his supreme leadership skills and pin-point accuracy. Second, there is a sense that the time to win is absolutely now. The Chargers don't want a window of opportunity to slam shut. Nate Kaeding is still sick over missing the overtime field goal against the Jets in the first round of the playoffs two years ago. And the last thing the Chargers' core players want to hear is how talented they were a year ago, when they snapped the Patriots' three-season-long home win streak, stopped the undefeated Colts in their tracks, yet couldn't get over the hump and into the playoffs. Let's examine the 2006 Chargers, perhaps the most fascinating team in the NFL this season. 2). Offensive Nuggets Marty Schottenheimer was nice enough to give us 20 nugget filled minutes in San Diego last Thursday. The coach was relaxed and honest during the conversation. And the biggest smile took over the stoic coach's face when he started describing venerable receiver Keenan McCardell. According to Schottenheimer, "Keenan is the epitome of everything right with the NFL. He is still playing at a great level because of how he works. Nobody works harder. Nobody. He is a pleasure to coach." McCardell was taken aback and truly appreciative when we told him about the high praise from his coach. He then told us that it is fear that motivates him; a fear of not playing this grand game again. McCardell is still a very productive offensive weapon. McCardell raved about the talent of second year wideout Vincent Jackson. Schottenheimer gushed about his raw ability and his work with receivers coach James Lofton. As we have written before, expect a breakthrough season for Jackson. And what truly aids these receivers, as McCardell put it, is having ;the big man with the golden hands' working the middle of the field. The Chargers' passing attack centers around Antonio Gates, who is one of the best weapons in any passing attack in the NFL. We had a revealing interview with Gates about his story and how close he came to playing basketball after leading Kent State to the Final 4. He also said the reason he chose the Chargers was the candor of the organization. While other teams promised him a roster spot or inflated his ego with visions of stardom, the humble and hardworking Gates liked that the Chargers coaches told him how hard this transition to football was going to be, and tested him to bring it day in and day out. That's how he became a Charger. And Gates is happy to be in camp this year, not feuding with management over a contractual issue that eventually led to him not playing in the season opener against Dallas, a vital loss where he was desperately needed in the redzone in the game's final moments. And while the receivers credit Gates, the tight end says this offense all starts with LaDainian Tomlinson. And it truly does. He is as breathtaking a player you can find in this league. And at times, nobody better. But there were moments last season, like the seven yards against Philadelphia, the whiff on a block in pass protection against Miami, where Tomlinson didn't produce like the superstar he has been in prior years. Now being fair, if you ask the players and coaches why that was the case, they will point to issues on the offensive line. Schottenheimer agreed with my assessment that the two areas of the team that need to be greatly improved are the offensive line and defensive backfield. For Schottenheimer, and guard Kris Dielman, it is all a matter of consistency in getting back to the 2004 form. But you wonder aloud if the drop-off had something to do with line coach Hudson Houck moving to Miami. When the offensive line plays well, it gives the innovative Cam Cameron options in calling plays. "

This is a ball player who can never be judged by his tackles or sacks. With the blockers he takes on, Williams frees up his fellow linemen, and especially his linebackers to make plays. Lost in the Merriman hoopla was the highly productive rookie season Luis Castillo had last season. Expect even bigger things this campaign. Donnie Edwards remains hurt, physically and mentally, after an off-season contractual squabble. He isn't practicing now and Matt Wilhelm has replaced him in the lineup. But as Schottenheimer said, this team needs to improve in the defensive backfield. And according to both coach and cornerback Quentin Jammer, that starts with making plays and interceptions. Jammer, who couldn't wipe the smile off of his face after receiving a freshly minted contract extension from the Chargers, stressed how important this was for San Diego. He's spent countless hours working with the Jugs machine. Jammer will finally have help on the opposite side with the drafting of Antonio Cromartie. The underrated Marlon McCree comes over from Carolina via free agency and instantly upgrades the safety position. Terrence Kiel must play better in 2006. Truthfully, there is no excuse for the Chargers' defensive backs not to make plays with the pressure Wade Phillips defense gets on a quarterback. 4). Quarterback Focus Talking to Rivers in person was a great experience. He absolutely oozes confidence. The son of a high school coach, Rivers feels he is more than ready to handle the expectations placed upon him for this season. Rivers started a whopping 51 games in his sensational college career at NC State. And Smith swears by him. The Chargers general manager says he thought all three top quarterbacks in the 2004 draft were going to become big time players, a class that included Ben Roethlisberger and Eli Manning. But Smith raves about Rivers' talent and football IQ and cannot wait to watch him on the field, truly believing he was the class of the draft. Rivers was also quick to mention he learned so much about leadership, how to deal with teammates, and game preparation by mentoring under Brees. And it is interesting, there wasn't one average thing said about Rivers, on or off the air. Everything was beyond flattering on the camp he's had. And this is from a group that simply adored Brees. Dielman says Rivers instantly assumed the leadership role in the mini-camps with his work ethic and huddle presence. McCardell and Gates both raved about Rivers' touch and accuracy. And both players say that Rivers' delivery is not an issue. And Rivers' go-to-weapons also both believe that his 'rookie' type mistakes will be limited because of how well he knows Cam Cameron's offense and the fact that he played so much in college. And as Rivers says, ‘I'm blessed. I have so much talent around me. If they ask me to hand it off to LaDainian time and time again, that's more than fine. It's whatever we need to do to win.' 5). Rookie Watch Marty Schottenheimer couldn't stop talking about the upside of tackle Marcus McNeil. The second-round pick has a realistic chance to start on opening day after really impressing the staff during training camp. The Chargers truly believe they stole a first-round talent in round two. Antonio Cromartie is healthy, something he wasn't during his college football career. Now that the cornerback is physically capable of playing ball, he is once again drawing comparisons to Deion Sanders. Quentin Jammer couldn't stop glowing about his upside. Nobody has ever denied Cromartie's skill. He just needs to prove he isn't a one man mash unit. We spent some time with former Clemson quarterback Charlie Whitehurst. He's out to prove the critics wrong who questioned his third-round draft status after a senior season where he was guilty of forcing the football. 6). Buzz If you want to get a dirty look from the Chargers brass, just mention the name Donnie Edwards. A.J. Smith pounded his first on the table while explaining that he has told the world that he will not get into an in-depth conversation about the veteran linebacker, who is upset about his contract. 7). He Said It "Yes, there are days when I think to myself, what if I never got hurt at the Portsmith Camp." Chargers tight end Antonio Gates reflecting on an injury while working out for the NBA. It was then he fully committed to football, and the Horatio Alger story began to unfold for the ball player who never played college football. 8). Can't Make It Up According to sources, the fiercest battle in training camp is the ping-pong battles, both on and off campus, between Gates and Rivers. 9). On the road again After Cowboys camp, we drove from Oxnard to San Diego. What a beautiful drive it was in sun-drenched Southern California. We drove along the water in Malibu, before stopping at the delicious and classy Chart House on the Pacific Ocean. I mean, literally on the Pacific Ocean. The food was unreal. And the atmosphere was better. And I am a cocky New Yorker when it comes to the food in Manhattan, but this was incredible seafood. I had the Ahi after a crab cake appetizer. Then after the Chargers show, we went to Junior Seau's restaurant. Solid turkey burger. The scenery in the bar on the other hand was sensational. "
