ya recreate their only loss and they are screwed. love the logic "put em up against a team with domonic james and 2 other guards the night after they beat air force and turn the ball over 20 times theres no way they win"

paulus did look really great and i still think that any given night this duke team can beat ANY team, but if they play like they did in the first half...they can lose to anyone...

acc season will tell us how good duke really is.

What are high hopes?

Reality is that we have top 10 talent and a pretty good body of work so far. If you understood that you don't have to average 80ppg to be good you might understand that and appreciate the great defense.

Instead, all you do is make up lies about me.

I joined near the end of football season. At that point, there was not many people hating on duke for no reason so there wasn't much to debate. Anybody can post the record after every game. I've been to all but 4 home football games in the last 2 years.

i don't pull for duke in football because i was brought up a huge college basketball fan and was in duke university/hospital all the time...that doesn't mean i'm not a duke fan because i don't post in football season. i bet nobody posts about duke bowling, golf, or even baseball.

my dad and i have tickets to the triple header on jan. 30th to see two future dukies nolan smith, and taylor king and the #1 player in the country, oj mayo from behind the goal.

he's probably the only #1 draft pick duke will ever have in the nfl

i'm one of the biggest duke basketball fans you'll find (and i like to think i know my stuff too), my dad was just never a big college football fan. i grew up on duke basketball, baltimore orioles and the indianapolis colts...now 2 of those are legitimate teams .

duke has been painful to watch in football since robert baldwin at rb and spurrier before that...if paulus played football maybe they could win a couple games

i cant remember when i started liking duke. i know it was before 1992 because i was happy my brother tapped the kentucky game..

but wait people, since we go/went to NCSU, apparently we cannot be duke fans.

hell, ive even met grant hills mother at a duke game. and once i acted like i was a reserve duke player and started signing autographs at cameron indoor after a game.

this was back in highschool. havnt been to a duke sporting event in bout 4 years, nor have i been to a NCSU one either.

"In search of his game, Scotch Plains' Thomas comes home
Struggling Duke freshman spending holidays polishing skills at local YMCA

By RYAN DUNLEAVY
Staff Writer

NEW YORK -- One bad game, one unresponsive practice and a subsequent benching brought Lance Thomas, a rising star on the country's pre-eminent college basketball campus, back to his roots as a gym rat at the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA in the matter of one week.

That is the roller-coaster ride of a freshman learning on the job in the national spotlight that shines on the Duke men's basketball team.

That is the new life of Thomas, a Scotch Plains resident.

Thomas made 10 consecutive starts for the Blue Devils and was averaging 6.5 points in 18 minutes per game, but after the first poor game of his collegiate career -- Tuesday vs. Kent State -- carried over into Wednesday's practice, Thomas found himself in the doghouse.

"Basically, I took a break. It's hard to admit that," said Thomas, a notoriously hard worker who spent much of his four-day Christmas vacation practicing in the same town where he first rose to national prominence. "I got what I deserved, but now it's time to turn it back on."

With about two dozen of his friends and family in attendance Thursday night -- including a small contingent, led by his mother and brother, seated behind the Duke bench -- Thomas played just three minutes and had nothing but zeros to show for it against Gonzaga in the Aeropostale Classic at Madison Square Garden.

"You just learn how to play with a chip on your shoulder at all times," Thomas said as the clock struck midnight and the lights dimmed at the Garden. "It should motivate any player. I want to go out there and work on my game right now."

Early success

Thomas enrolled at Duke during the summer to get a head start in the classroom and on the court. The strategy immediately worked on both accounts.

"We'd love to have 10 Lance Thomases," Duke assistant coach Steve Wojciechowski said.

Although it is too soon to know Thomas' first-semester academic grades, the high-school honor-roll student is expecting high marks.

"Whatever happens with basketball happens, but if you walk away with that Duke education, you're gold," said Scotch Plains-Fanwood coach Dan Doherty, for whom Thomas played as a freshman and sophomore before transferring to St. Benedict's Prep in Newark.

On the other hand, athletic performance is constantly being evaluated, and Thomas' initial reviews were staggering.

He stepped into the starting lineup after the season opener and quickly became a defensive stopper for the unusually inexperienced Blue Devils.

"He's been a real weapon for our team," Wojciechowski said. "People can try to describe talent in a lot of different ways, but that he gives his best every time is a talent. That's an edge he has. If playing hard was easy, everyone would do it."

That is not to say Thomas' early approval rating should surprise anyone.

Full-blown effort is how Thomas -- a late-bloomer by today's recruiting standards -- first made a splash at talent-packed Amateur Athletic Union tournaments.

"He looks like he's hustling more now than he did in high school, which is hard to believe," Doherty said.

The same character traits that implore Thomas to trade bruises for loose balls in a basketball uniform also impressed his suitors on an unofficial visit to Duke during his junior year.

"When we first met him, we realized he was very intelligent, but we were struck by his drive and determination," Wojciechowski said. "He set high goals and standards, and that sticks out from the crowd. When we asked Lance who he wanted to be, he said, 'An educated man, the highest-level basketball player and an all-around good person.' A lot of times when you talk you with kids you get a one-word answer like 'NBA player.' "

Wojciechowski said Duke started recruiting Thomas while he was a sophomore but that the program's interest intensified the following summer once he and Scotch Plains-Fanwood teammate Derrick Caracter separated.

"Derrick had cast such a big shadow as a youngster and then in high school that Lance really broke through on the national scene going into his junior year," Wojciechowski said. "Right off the bat, you knew what kind of unique, special kid you were dealing with. When you marry high character, high talent and a capable student together, you have a formula for success."

I'm a Dukie, not a Knight

Every Blue Devil has a moment where the realization sets in that they are officially part of the face of college basketball.

Wojciechowski, who played for Duke from 1994-98, and Gerald Henderson, Thomas' college roommate, both had theirs while scrimmaging against past Blue Devil greats some time before their respective freshman seasons.

Thomas' welcome-to-Duke moment was much more definitive: Once the season began, friends and family started regularly calling him to say they watched his latest game on ESPN.

"That's when I knew I was officially a Blue Devil," Thomas said.

One of the last big-time recruits of his class to commit, Thomas flirted with scholarship offers from Arizona and Florida but ultimately chose Duke over Rutgers in what he maintains was an 11th-hour decision.

Either way, it was a decision that did not sit well with Rutgers fans, many of whom spent the hours leading up Thomas' announcement pleading with him via open-ended letters on Internet message boards.

"It was actually really close, but in the end I picked the school I thought was better for me," Thomas said. "It came down to the wire at my press conference."

While Rutgers and Duke appear to be polar opposites as programs and campuses, the Blue Devils' biggest recruiting wars often are waged against state schools. Duke also edged Rutgers for Plainfield native Jay Williams in 1998.

"Generally, it's the school closest to home, and us," Wojciechowski said. "(With Lance) it was a hard thing to overcome."

Thomas said he knew he made the right decision as soon as he arrived in Durham, N.C., and -- despite a quick smile -- that he is taking no solace in Rutgers' struggles.

"Everything is world class," Thomas said of Duke. "The coaching, the players, the way we carry ourselves and the intensity that is brought to practice on a day-to-day basis."

Work to do

Duke assistant coach Chris Collins stopped Thomas as he shuffled through the postgame locker room Thursday night.

With a hand on Thomas' shoulder, Collins delivered a brief message. Once it was said, Thomas nodded his head, clenched Collins' hand and kept walking.

"They want me to take it in a positive manner," Thomas said of his sudden reduced role. "Don't sulk from it. Respond from it."

With four freshmen logging significant minutes, there clearly is less of a grace period this season compared with traditional Duke teams.

"Freshmen are going to be up and down," sophomore guard and tri-captain Greg Paulus said. "The thing you've got to keep doing is working and learning from your mistakes. He (Thomas) is going to be really helpful for us."

Especially if Thomas responds to every dip on the roller-coaster with the same enthusiasm as he did to his first one.

"There is no half stepping around on this level," Thomas said. "You have to be sharp, be in the best shape of your life and be a sponge to coaching. The level of physicality is 100 times stronger than high school. I think I did a good job of adjusting, but I still have lots of work to do.""

Well our offense goes as paulus goes and if paulus doesn't play well we're going to be in a tough situation and have to play perfect defense. VT was making too many crazy shots for that to happen yesturday. I'm confident Paulus will play well this season.
