this is exactly what i was thinking while listening to the game last night...that exact game. We gave 20 pts to WCU, and you guys called it...

I can't believe we gave up 10 pts to App State. I didn't get to hear the whole game, but from what I heard, it sounded like the Mountaineers made some huge mistakes that cost them points too, and an ACC school isn't going to lay down like that...

I don't see how anyone can defend Stone now. Last season, alot was reported about how trestman ran practices like a pro team - 1st string QB got 80% of the snaps, backups got something like 10% each.

When Stone came in, the excuse (either from the coaching staff or the reporters, i don't recall) was that he didn't have a lot of experience taking snaps, since Jay was #1 for all the summer practices and half the season. Ok, he's had plenty of experience running the O in practice, has 7 starts under his belt, and only put up 36 yds against a D1-AA defense. I'd bet Chuck is tossing in his sleep all week...

that said, I think the best thing that could happen to Burke would be for him to keep the redshirt this season.

In App's defense I think they are 10 times more talented than Western was that year. I also think our DLine will be better than it was Rivers' senior year where we started 3 freshmen and a sophmore.

I didn't watch the game, so I can't say how we looked first hand (I listened on the radio). We sounded okay, but I'll reserve judgement on our D until we play a Div I-A school.

I'm more worried about the 44 or whatever passing yards we had vs. a I-AA school. Teams like FSU, BC, et.al. are going to eat us alive with shit like that

Jay could definetely pass better than Stone. Problem is... every third pass was to the other team.

Stone doesn't even try to throw.

When the ball is snapped he's a deer in headlights. He's like Homer or Peter Griffin, his mind just wanders and he can't remember who his #2 receiver is.... He KNOWS he's supposed to throw the ball but his instinct is just to tuck & run. Compare it to going to a bar with your girlfriend. You get wasted and you know you're not supposed to leave her at the table to go talk to other girls but you do it anyway.

Last night on 680, they were talking about a pass completion marcus had.

"Now there's something I've never seen from Marcus Stone. He went through his progression and threw to the #3 receiver. Last year he would have tucked and ran if his #1 receiver was covered"

^^i remember the play that he went through his progressions. But he still looked like a deer in headlights on that play. he was seriously jumping around in the pocket like he had no time. But he had one of the largest pockets on that play of the night

The problem is, that our offense would be much better off with someone who at least poses a passing threat than Stone.

People can bash Jay Davis all they want, but at least he wasn't afraid to throw the ball and could keep defenses at least remotely honest.

Since, you know, someone had to be in the secondary to catch the interception.

we didnt "collapse" in 02. we met 3 tough teams and lost. we got screwed in the gt game (that terrance holt pick was inbounds) then everyone was hurt for uva (jericho ta and somebody else i forgot) i thought jericho was still out of the maryland game and ta definatly threw that game away. but it was something about if maryland made the fg in the first place we wouldve won. something about maryland missing a field goal ended up making them win.

The two things that concerned me the most, with the obvious exception of our passing game, were:

-Andre Brown seems to either be unwilling or incompetent at pass blocking
-The entire defense seemed to over-pursue, with the ends losing contain on every other play. I'm not sure if that will fly against a team with a mobile quarterback or a talented misdirection game.

ASU uses a gameplan much like Wake Forest... it's lots of misdirection will punish overpursuing defenses.

As I said, I couldn't watch the game, but they were great prep for Wake Forest and we probably won't see another team with that type of offense aside from Wake

The reason we probably looked like we overpursued is becuase that's what they design it for...shouldn't be as huge of a problem vs. traditional offenses

I'm a big supporter of Chuck, but I got a bad feeling last night watching his press conference on the news. The portion they aired had him talking about how last year everyone wanted him to run the ball, and yesterday they asked him about the passing game. Despite being cliche, I'd much rather hear him say something to the effect of "We're a long way from where we want to be. We have a lot of work to do," etc. etc.

from what I have heard, when a coach is giving the play to Stone, Stone walks away half way threw th play call because he already knows what play is going to be called.

Stone's knowledge of the offense isnt the problem, its the execution.

And be fair, we are a running team now. We shouldnt alot of yards when throwing is secondary. From what I remember, I dont think we threw more than a handful of passes the entire game though.

not this chicken shit 44 yards on 2 yard ding passes....kinda like texas tech is a passing machine, but when they run they get somethign out of it

He said if I messed up, he would just buzz it. So, I just practiced a couple of times and started getting really good at it. I started cutting a few heads here and there, but it's nothing real serious."

Now, he said he cuts his teammates' hair at no charge whenever they want. And they seem to trust him.

"Yeah, yeah, I trust him," Lowery said with a smile. "No problems at all."

Amato even said he would let his quarterback cut his hair.

"Yeah, of course I'd let him," Amato said. "And sure, I'd cut his hair - with a knife.""

Again (Broken record here)... I couldn't see the game, but based on last year I'll say Stone sucks tremendously becuase of the Offensive Line. Mike Barry was terrible.

Did they look better Saturday?

In Stone's defense, he doesn't lose the game for us. I hate to bash the guy... he tries his damndest, I just wish he'd get a little confidence in himself... get a little time from the OLine, and be a halfway effective passer.

The physical tools are all there.

no, the o-line was just as bad as last year. the only 'running game' we had was when they'd run it around the side, very few yards up the middle.

however, even when stone did have time.. he was bad.

Last year the very first game that awful Jay Davis threw for 300+ yards and nearly led us to a victory over a top-10 team and defending ACC champs. IIRC he was the only QB to throw for more than even 200 yards on them. Only imagine if Andre Brown could see the field in that game that day. Stone would not have seen the field at all last year except in mop-up duty.

What I don't understand is people are backing Marcus after this performance and yet people would bash Jay no matter what.

I would much rather our QB throw downfield and throw a pick than him to run on 3rd and 10. I mean at least with the throw there is a CHANCE that we get a 1st down. When he runs on 3rd down it ASSURES us that we will be punting.

I am not going to look up the numbers but by % of passes, I would be willing to bet that Stone throws more INTs than Jay did.

ahahaha, what does this have to do with jay? Jay threw screens that got picked off and led to TDs. He also was notorious for throwing the ball short on 3rd down or TD situations. You do remember that we sucked balls in the red zone, right?

revisionist history at its finest. You don't have to suck Jay's dick, faggot, to prove that stone is bad.

to be honest jay would have looked much better if he had andre brown running the ball. just like people think stone is the man, while he completed an avg of 1 pass per first half last year

i mean come on, the guy tried out for the tampa bay bucs and iirc, gruden said a few nice things about him, he can't be THAT bad.

Remember that play against UNC where davis barely got the ball to the endzone in the final seconds and everyone was just sitting there waiting for it and knocked it down?

Remember that drive against wake when Baker broke a 40 yard run and Davis fucked it up by underthrowing his receiver (one on one) in the endzone and got picked?

Remember his 3 picks against VT?

Remember countless other plays where Davis didnt have the arm strength to make a play?

And then remember Stone coming in and throwing a pass against Wake from the 45 or 50 yard line that went into the endzone for a touchdown?

Then the next drive he catches Brian Clark down the sideline for another 25 plus yard gain?

My point is, that Stone posed a DEEP threat (not passing in general, just deep), which backed defenses up for Andre letting him find some open field. Andre would not have been as good with Davis because after the VT game, teams just stacked the box. They only backed up when Stone came in, just because they didnt want to give up the big play.

I'm not saying that Stone is a better quarterback than Davis, because I personally think they both suck asshole, but Stone was different from davis and his style fit this team better.

[Edited on September 4, 2006 at 12:19 PM. Reason : BTW....stone missed some receivers early in the game, but our line sucked dick in pass protection.]

Stone no longer poses a threat because Jay Davis is gone

Stone is a better player than Jay was, but Jay was a better quarterback

Right now we need a quarterback like presence in our offence

This years offensive scenario is worse than last seasons because Stone doesn't have another mediocre player to fall back on

He's just Stone, so defenses know what to expect by now

and when the defenses figure out how to stop Brown, Stone's going to turn into Jay 2.0

[Edited on September 4, 2006 at 12:23 PM. Reason : and i'll totally agree that o-line doesn't help anyone, except toney baker when we run a trap play]

dumbest quote ever

i would much rather have Stone running for yards and controlling the clock and turnover battle than Jay throwin a pick and having it ran back for a TD every time. I will stay with the offense like it is.

I looked at the video from some games last year and I have looked at the App State games, Marcus last year would stare down one reciever and if he wasnt open run it...in the app state games he was going through his routes and check offs as well as knowing if the coverage was tehre to throw it away. The problem it seems its that he has an overload of info when hes going through the play like he gets nervous because there are too many options to pass to and doesnt want to screw it up. He can throw it downfield and I wish we would start letting him throw some deep balls once we see single man coverage downfield but I dont know when that may happen.

All in all hes improving and hes only a Junior so we will have a nother year with him at the reigns, best thing to do is hope he continues to improve and works the butterflies out, that INT he threw wasnt his fault, the reciever was taking Lamarts place on that play and it was a curl route that the wide out never did his come back on. I think once he gets used to playing again on teh field and learns to calm down in the pocket we will be good to go...we wont be peyton when it comes to a passing attack by any means, more like a Steelers run oriented offense with some small yardage passes and trickery.

with all that said I have TOTAL faith in Marc Trestman as I look at what he has done in the NFL with those QB's(gannon) and wha tI know he is capable of, so go Marcus and GO STATE!

agreed,

hopefully stone breaks out against Akron so this doesnt become the scenario, but I'm expecting the worst.

OH, and the play that pissed me off the most was late in the game on a 3rd and about 4 yards where Bowens was out wide against a defender playing 10 yards back from him in zone coverage. In this situation, Stone has to change the play at the line and have bowens catch a screen pass. This shows that Stone is still not reading defenses, even if he does understand the offense. Now we ran the ball on that play, but I would have loved to see him make that heads up play call at the line.
