It depends on the philosophy of the instructor. Aside from syllabus weights, there are social and psychological consequences with performance.
If it's a hard science with strict adherence to the letter of the syllabus, then negotiating adjustment of weighting in exchange for missing an exam might be a good bet.
If it's a humanity where psychological manipulation of the professor is a daily struggle, presenting the impression that you are there to worship their magnitude is the best option, so going with Vegas could be damning in that case. 9/14/2006 11:23:31 AM |

it's not that i think he "should" in the sense that he should feel obligated or that i have any right to expect his compliance with a pleasure trip. i was just suprised by the tenacity with which he denied my requests, especially since i've been in college for a while and have had a lot more assholish professors grant me those kinds of favors. i don't have any resentment or hard feelings toward him at all, it's his call and he'll do what he feels is right. but none of you can deny that in my situation that you wouldn't at least TRY to get him to allow a make-up, or some other arrangement. that's all i'm doing.9/14/2006 11:56:16 AM |

I doubt bringing in any higher ups (including Mom and Dad- c'mon??!!) are going to change the prof's mind.
Furthermore, the fact that "other professors" didn't have a problem with it isn't your prof's problem. That's like whining "mom, all the OTHER kids get to go to the party. Ed's Mom is letting HIM go!!!"
Just swallow the zero and hope for the best. OR ask him would he be willing to use your score from one of the other exams this semester as a replacement? I don't know- I don't think you have a good case here.

try to see it from his perspective for a minute. you're asking him to do extra work so you can go and have fun. this situation is your parents' fault. airline tickets may not be "transferrable" or "refundable" but they often can and will give you the equivalent of "store credit" if you have to make changes to your reservation. take a copy of the syllabus and a good puppy-dog face to the ticket counter at RDU and see if someone working for the airline will cut you a break.9/14/2006 3:51:37 PM |

it's not god power, it's personality.
first, i know nobody would ever book a trip for me without asking me when it was convenient for me to go.
