I've thought about the ending of Stranger than Fiction in this way also. However, I think I like that it does not take the more tragic route. I like the message that the author can't kill off Harold because we need more genuinely good people in the world.

Of course I am late to the party but after watching this film I must agree with how great this movie is. It's not often that I watch foreign films but this one gave me some inspiration to try out other great foreign films out there.

City of God is a good recommendation, yes. If you really liked the Spanish in Pan's Labyrinth, check out a few of Pedro Almodovar's films (Volver, All About My Mother), they're great.

Others:
The Exterminating Angel (or any most Bunuel film, to be fair)
Ikiru (likewise, most any Kurosawa film, though Seven Samurai is my second favorite)
The Last Emperor
Band of Outsiders
(if you end up liking French new wave, look at more Godard)
Shame (or any number of Bergman films, The Seventh Seal and Persona are both great)
Raise the Red Lantern (any Zhang Yimou film with the exception of Hero, it's not as good as his earlier films: though I warn you, one of the companies hired to make DVDs for his earlier movies transfered every fucking scratch on the film ... My now out-of-print copy of To Live is perfect, though. The ERA releases are a lot better than the Razor ones. I need to petition Criterion to take up making DVDs for his films.)
Fitzcarraldo (and other Herzog films, too, Aguirre is awesome)
Wings of Desire
Army of Shadows
The Battle of Algiers
La Dolce Vita (though really, Fellini freaks me out more than he makes any sense)
The Three Colors Trilogy (I liked Red best)
Deepa Mehta's Fire/Earth/Water Trilogy (I liked Water best)

There are more, these are just the ones that popped into my head first. Happy hunting in foreign film land.

talk to her (by almodovar) is one of my all-time favorites, so i'd recommend that over volver (slightly) and certainly over "all about my mother"

Was a good movie but in a strange way. It's one of those movies you just keep watching to see what happens. It's very twisted and unique which makes it stand out over other films but I don't know if I would place it as one of my favorite movies.

"Requiem For a Dream" cannot be compared or remotely, in any way be compared similiar but for some reason we, some friends and I, compared the movie to it. It's one of those flicks you watch and afterwards think, man that was twisted, different, and I don't know if I like it or love it. However "Requiem For a Dream " is a better film IMO.

'Cause one of them is twisted and weird in a "OMG DRUGS!" way, and the other is weird in a "OH FUCK, MAGICAL UNIVERSE!" way

they're like so totally the same, spooks

So I finally caught this movie on HBO (I wanted to see it in the theater, but that didn't happen).

It was different than I expected, but I enjoyed it a lot. The ending was very bittersweet, and I was surprised at how cruel the Captain was. But, I like it. I will definitely watch it again.

Eyes-in-the-Hands guy was creeeeeeeeeeeeepy.

saw it on hbo as well. don't normally like movies w/subtitles b/c i'm lazy but it was probably the easiest to watch subtitled movie i can remember. it was good. lol and i thought it was funny how the eyes in his hands dude still insisted upon holding his hands in front of his face to see.

Also late to the party on this one. Very good movie.

SPOILERS

I'm surprised some people thought it was all in her head, how'd you explain the mother's sudden recovery and death later on? The ending is very bittersweet, especially since it doesn't even mention how things turn out for her brother. Did she make him a prince, even though her mom died?

And yeah Mercedes was the shit. The slit mouth followed by telling the captain his son would never know he existed was some hardcore pwnage.

END SPOILERS

Because you can tailor you imagination to fit with things that are going on in reality.
