Quote : | "Cowher a long shot for State, but appears to top wish list
By Sammy Batten Staff writer ADVERTISEMENT
N.C. State’s search to replace Chuck Amato as its head football coach should start with a telephone call to Bill Cowher of the Pittsburgh Steelers, says one of the university’s most influential boosters.
The Wolfpack’s football operations center at Carter-Finley Stadium is named for Rose Hill businessman Wendell Murphy. Murphy also currently serves as chairman of the school’s Board of Trustees.
Cowher is a former N.C. State linebacker and in February a trust managed by his sports agency purchased a $2.5 million home in Raleigh.
Murphy believes luring Cowher to Raleigh to coach the Wolfpack is a long shot, but it’s worth a phone call to find out if he’s interested.
“I know absolutely nothing about what the possibility of that is,’’ Murphy said Monday. “If you asked, my intuition tells me that’s a slim possibility.
“But we’d be foolish not to try to find out (Cowher’s interest). This should be a nationwide search to find the best possible coach. Not to contact him (Cowher) would be foolish.’’
N.C. State decided not to retain Amato on Sunday after seven years and a 49-37 record. The Wolfpack had slumped to 3-9 this season and ended the year with seven straight losses. The final two were against intrastate rivals North Carolina and East Carolina.
Steve Williams, a recruiting analyst for the N.C. State fan Web site PackPride.com, said Cowher also seemed to be the favorite choice among posters on their message boards.
“I think what everybody wants is Bill Cowher,’’ Williams said. “But at the same time, State fans are realistic enough to know that’s probably a long shot. It could happen, but the odds are against it.
“After Cowher, I think the guy most people are excited about is Paul Johnson up at Navy. He’s a guy who has been real successful at Georgia Southern and Navy. I think the fans like the fact he’s been able to turn programs around.’’
N.C. State athletic director Lee Fowler is now faced with conducting his second major coaching search this year. Men’s basketball coach Herb Sendek left in April to take over the program at Arizona State. It took Fowler five weeks before he landed former Wolfpack guard Sidney Lowe for the job. Hope for quick search
Fowler spent part of Monday meeting with members of the football team. A program source said Fowler told the team he hoped to have a head coach hired before the Christmas break (Dec. 20).
Murphy doesn’t think the search for a football coach will last as long as it did for basketball.
“I believe it will go swiftly,’’ Murphy said. “But I don’t worry about how quick. What’s important is that we get it right. It’s far more important for us to get it right.’’
How quickly the Wolfpack hires a new coach could have an impact on its recruiting class.
Amato’s staff has received 17 oral commitments for 2007, but some of those might re-open their recruitment depending on how fast a coach is found and who the school hires.
“If they can wrap up this thing before Christmas, and give themselves the whole month of January to bring kids in on visits, they should be OK,’’ Williams said. “They would probably hold on to most of their class. I think that would be their main focus, just to hold onto the kids they have.’’ Staff writer Sammy Batten can be reached at battens@fayobserver.com or 486-3534." |

how bout this?
Quote : | "Q: Speculation is always fun, but is there any "hard evidence" that Cowher has been or will be offered the job?
A: No. The way these things usually work (at all schools), the only way Cowher, N.C. State athletic director Lee Fowler, Board of Trustees chairman Wendell Murphy or anyone else of influence will confirm that the job has been offered to Cowher is if he agrees to accept it. (Remember, to this moment, nobody from NCSU has ever confirmed publicly that the school's basketball job was offered to Rick Barnes, although everyone knows that was the case.) Eventually, other informed NCSU folks will provide updates on the Wolfpack's football search. For now, though, it will be up to Cowher to address the situation publicly, as soon as he's made up his mind.
Q: When do you expect Cowher to decide whether he's a "candidate" or a "consultant"?
A: Very soon. Maybe even tomorrow at his regularly scheduled Steelers press conference. Of course, if he says anything that soon, it probably will be bad news for N.C. State. If he really were interested in the Wolfpack job, obviously, it would take a little bit longer to strike a deal. If the answer is no, the sooner the better for the Pack.
Q: Hasn't Cowher already turned down the Wolfpack once before?
A: Yes. When N.C. State fired Mike O'Cain after the 1999 season, Cowher was the first person to be offered the job by then-AD Les Robinson. Cowher declined (citing bad timing), as did former Georgia coach Jim Donnan and others, before Amato was hired. But Cowher also told many at NCSU at the time that he would always listen in the future, whenever the job came open again, and that you never know when the timing might be right.
Q: If you had to guess, do you think the timing is right for Cowher this time?
A: No. But that's all it is right now, a guess. The same NCSU sources who repeatedly provided this blog with incredibly accurate, insightful, detailed information during the Wolfpack's basketball search are not at all optimistic that Cowher will say "yes" this time. Again, though, even they admit they merely are speculating at this point." |

Charlie Weis did, but that's two different scenarios (Head coach vs. Assistant).
He also didn't announce it until right before the Super Bowl, IIRC.
The only thing that makes me think he maybe would come out with it (If it were to happen, which I doubt) would be that Pitts season is practically over already. I still don't think he'd make it public until the season is completely over, but they realistically aren't going to the playoffs 11/29/2006 9:32:50 AM |

Interesting commentary on Cowher's status:
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/dailycourier/news/s_481797.html
Some quotes:
Quote : | "John, N.C. State fans already had one prayer answered when Lorenzo Charles caught that Dereck Whittenburg air ball in the 1983 NCAA men's basketball title game and dunked it along with heavily favored Phi Slamma Jamma. They ain't getting another one answered, at least not in the form of Bill Cowher returning to his alma mater as the head football coach." |
Quote : | "And let's take a look at it from N.C. State's standpoint: even if Cowher would want to coach the Wolfpack he couldn't start there until January at the earliest. That would give him all of one month to put together a recruiting class. And if I'm an athletic director I have to wonder if Cowher is going to be willing to do all of the grunt work that is required in recruiting, especially at a place like N.C. State." |
Paints a more realistic picture, IMO.11/29/2006 11:09:56 AM |

And state sports (barring the occasional decent season) have been sporadic and generally poor since the 83 championship with no conference champs in bball since 87 (i think) and certainly marginal football success (mostly sheridan)
I think we are due for another miracle after 24 years of shit.

The 'realistic' picture is, it's a longshot.
However, these guys don't realize that sometimes it isn't about money. If Cowher wants out of the NFL and wants to stay busy, he'll be our coach or a commentator.
These guys are basing all of this on the fact that Cowher will take a pay cut. They don't realize we've asked him before and his response was 'the timing isn't right'. Maybe it is now... he's reached the pinnacle in the NFL.
They're talking heads and nothing more.
As far as recruiting... I don't think Cowher would require much recruiting here. He would watch hundreds of tapes and say "Okay, I want you, you, you, you, and you"
It wouldn't be that hard 11/29/2006 11:16:17 AM |

I don't think it would be as hard to recruit to NCSU now as it was before Amato.
Say what you will about Chuck, but he did put us on the map. We aren't a noname program anymore. 11/29/2006 11:16:39 AM |

^^^I don't think recruiting is really that big of an issue. I mean it's bill motherfucking cowher, who wouldn't jump at a chance to play for him with facilities in the top 10% of the nation? If Cowher signs w/ us I can guarantee we get every single recruit that Amato had, plus maybe a few surprises.
The biggest road block in my mind is simply if Cowher needs a break. I believe it is obvious he wants a break from the NFL, but does he want a break from football altogether?

Cowher will have no trouble recruiting. Hopefully the guys we are keeping on staff will be able to secure our current commitments and then when Cowher is named, a few on the fence will solidify with the Pack. Cowher having trouble recruiting is a joke. 11/29/2006 11:21:22 AM |

Cowher won't publicly turn us down, IMO. He wouldn't want to embarass the University.... and that info wouldn't come out until we made an announcement on the new coach.
Last time, we found out later he said 'thanks but not now' when we hired Chuck. He was the one that recommended Chuck and he helped us every step of the way while looking at candidates.
We'll find out what ole Bill says when we get our coach, IMO. If he's said no, he's behind the scenes working with us now.
In other news, chances are still slim... but my hopes are up a little from a few days ago. It seriously sounds like he's giving it some though according to people who have a reputation for knowing whats going on in the program.
Granted, the chances are probably still slim.. don't get me wrong... but from what I understand he's listening to us and hasn't given us a no yet (Publicly or privately)11/29/2006 11:35:32 AM |

Yeah, the interim situation, if that's the case, should be handled very quickly and be very very public about who we intend to hire for 2008. If Cowher says yes to coming then, we should be screaming it out. I think that's a big issue to make a commitment like that a year in advance. What if something happens and we end up getting screwed in the end and we're stuck with an interim-to-permanent coach?

Charlie Weiss coached all the way into the Super Bowl while transfering over to his job with Notre Dame, it didn't seem like much of an issue. Pitt isn't even going to make the playoffs. Granted Weiss was just an OC and not a head coach, if Cowher did want to come and decided to he would have no trouble getting shit on track even with a late start. Also, our team is young so if this recruiting class isn't great,we still have plenty of young talent. We shouldn't lose what we have, can probably pick up a few more, and then he could be rolling next year.
But this doesn't matter, because he isn't going to coach here next year. If anything, he takes a few years off, or stays at Pitt, those are my guesses. 11/29/2006 12:39:17 PM |
