Maybe some you can help me with this.

My friend wants to come to NC to do some deep sea fishing. We also don't want to spend a fortune doing it. I had gone out with a company in Atlantic Beach that was great, but I'm wondering if there are any companies on the Outer Banks that aren't only private charters.

^ Where on Bond Lake do you fish?

^^^ Yeah, that's kind of what I'm hoping we can do. I tried to do one out of Ocracoke last summer but the guy never found enough people to justify going out

^ haha, I've fished out there before.

Makes up charter is going to be your best bet. It's 1/6th the price of charter + tip. You could also try cruising a fishing board and try to hitch a ride as a ho.

If your dont mind not getting to keep your catch some crews will let u in go with them during tuna season if u just give them a little gas money (They normally dont do any charters during this time of season because of the huge cashflow they bring in from selling the tuna). It is still alot of fun, had a friend go out on a boat for a whole week of tuna fishing for free. The deal was he would go fishing with them and when they got back he would help one of the mates clean the boat (30 min or so). On friday the crew kept 1 of the smaller tuna and cut it up to split with the mates and they gave him a share just as if he was a regular member of the crew.

^ Really, Interesting the guy I always go deep see fishing with doesnt do any charters during that time of year...... when they do the charters do you get to keep your catch? It is really really expensive?

Otherwise I dont understand because they make a lot of $$$$$$$$$ selling the tuna.... more than the price of the charter.

Also, where from? I normally go out from oregon inlet

The OI fleet will run charters year round. Some Captains will go into commercial fishing or go south for the winter. This time of year they are extremely busy with charters, just check out some of the pictures on http://www.oregon-inlet.com.

During the winter months, when fishing for Bluefin, Captains will take the tuna and sell it commercially and give the charter party a free trip. There is some serious cash to be made in that.

Even Striper fishing is done from some of the larger boats in the winter.

Yea thats what I was talking about..... I only normally went during the winter.... I caught some huge rock in december a few years ago. I caught a 44lb rock and a 47lb rock on the same line (double hook rig).

I might go striper fishing on Tuesday w/ Tube Steak. Fishing has been real slow on the Chesapeake.

oregon inlet striper fishing for dummies:
1. drop it to the bottom
2. tighten drag and pull up striper(s)
3. repeat

other than the fact that they pull hard and it costs more, it's just like bottom fishing for spots on the pier, i like my fishing to require some skill, just my $0.02

^^Ain't that simple, maybe from the shore it is. I've run 40 miles to find fishing along the beach in a boat. You have to work marks, birds, slicks, temps and depths. The last trip I went on we launched out of VA, Fished all the way down to Duck and then caught them north of Virginia Beach all in the same trip.

The asians who were down on the potomac the other day were hauling in catfish hand over fist. Good size too, I just wouldn't ever eat a bottom feeding fish out of the Potomac even if the human race depended on it.

thats what I'm thinking, I might be able to fish some drift rigs beachside for some blues and maybe sneak around soundside and catch a trout or some drum

if I can convince my friend to take his mitch craft out, we'd slaughter the drum and flounder in the shallow waterways

anyone ever catch cobia or blues from the beach?

I have a couple surf rods, but never really caught anything except for some croakers and such

need a good idea for a surf rod rig for blues and cobia

should I just get larger hooks and use larger bait?

or could I cast a standard king rig with a boston mackerel or mullet on it and use it as a drift rig... or should I do that and use a balloon?

I'm such a whore. Made some phone calls and I'm catching a ride with a charter captain tomorrow on his off day, hopefully making some more calls and going with some randoms on Saturday and meeting the family for a charter on Sunday.

^Get a boat for cobia. That would be your best bet.

aint catching no cobia from the surf unless you were on pier, thats your best chance if you dont have a boat, if you got a boat, go and sit inside the hook in barden's inlet asap, thats where i got mine last year and thats where there will be 100's of boats parking bottom fishing, i got mine on a menhaden

i hope theres still the 10lb blues and puppy drum in the surf at ocracoke this weekend
