I used to go to 10 games a year or so when I lived in NY. I've seen them win plenty of times.

If the O's fire Perlozzo, they will lose Mazzone and it will be a huge mistake. Mazzone is ten times more valuable as a pitching coach than Perlozzo is as a manager. Jesus Christ I'm so tired of this shit. The O's have got to be the most fickle organization in sports.

why don't they fire someone who's dismissal would make a difference.. it's obvious that the manager isn't the big issue..

so long Angelos!

I can't stand Perlozzo's calls lately though...he knows that Baez is struggling and he still continues to throw him in there in major pressure situations. He has blown, literally, about six appearances in a row where the O's were in the lead and he comes in and dicks around and we lose.

Perlozzo....get your ish together!

i rather them trade Huff instead of Markakis.. Markakis can at least get on base.. and we don't need 3 first basemen..

Nice win tonight! 9-1 over the Royals

So, Jaret Wright is expected to be off the DL later this week. Our replacement starters have been pitching well. Will he earn his spot back or will Guthrie and Burres continue to start?

bullpen seems to be horrid for the O's this season. Many games i've seen them leading into the 7th inning and on and end up losing.

MASN takes Time Warner to arbitration

http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/story/596097.html

Quote :
"The regional sports network that broadcasts the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals has filed for arbitration in an attempt to force Time Warner Cable to carry the network in the Triangle.

MASN, which is controlled by the Orioles, has the TV rights to Major League Baseball in Eastern North Carolina and is carried in the Raleigh-Durham market by DirecTV and Dish Network but not Time Warner, despite more than two years of negotiations.

When the Federal Communications Commission approved the partitioning of bankrupt cable system Adelphia by Time Warner and Comcast, it gave regional sports networks the right to take cable providers to arbitration if they refused to carry the networks.

That provision was designed to find a solution in the Washington market, where Nationals games were unavailable on local cable during the team's first two seasons because Comcast refused to carry MASN. A settlement was reached in that dispute in August.

According to the request filed with the American Arbitration Association by MASN, negotiations with Time Warner broke down over MASN's demand to be carried on basic or expanded cable (like ESPN or Fox Sports Net South) while Time Warner was only willing to negotiate over space on its digital system (like ESPNews or Fox Soccer Channel).

MASN also argues in the request that Time Warner is protecting its own News 14. The news channel now carries Charlotte Bobcats games after the demise of the Bobcats' own C-SET network -- which had been carried by Time Warner on a digital tier.

In correspondence between lawyers for Time Warner and MASN included in the filing, a Time Warner lawyer argues that "TWC is unconvinced that MASN's programming will be sufficiently popular in North Carolina to justify adding it to an analog tier."

Additionally, Time Warner asserts that MASN is not "regional" to North Carolina and therefore ineligible for arbitration under the FCC provisions. Time Warner's corporate media relations staff in New York did not respond to a request for comment. "

I say TWC does have a point in MASN not being too popular in NC, thus warranting a digital tier allocation. As long as they put it on the free digital tier and not on those sports/premium tiers. I could care less what they do in terms of digital or analog, just give us the channel!

Perlozzo out as skipper; MacPhail hired as COO

Quote :
"Sam Perlozzo's brief tenure as Orioles manager ended Monday.

The team has called a 1 p.m. news conference where it will announce that Perlozzo has been fired. Orioles executives Mike Flanagan and Jim Duquette informed Perlozzo of the decision Monday, ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney reports.

Bullpen coach Dave Trembley, who has served as a minor league manager in the organization, will be the interim manager when the Orioles begin a six-game trip in San Diego on Tuesday.

Sources told Olney that Baltimore is trying to arrange a meeting with former Florida Marlins manager Joe Girardi to discuss the job.

Meanwhile, the same sources said Andy MacPhail has reached an agreement to be the Orioles' chief operating officer.

MacPhail and Girardi overlapped in Chicago during MacPhail's tenure as Cubs president and CEO of the Chicago Cubs, which began in 1994 and ended in 2006. Girardi, who managed the Florida Marlins in 2006, was the Cubs' catcher for two stints totaling six seasons, the last from 2000-02.

MacPhail won two World Series championships as general manager of the Minnesota Twins in 1987 and 1991.

Orioles shaking things up?

If you're looking to assign blame in Baltimore, don't forget the "improved" 'pen. And, Rob Neyer wants to know, how could the O's be this bad -- twice now -- under pitching coach Leo Mazzone? Blog Insider

Joe Girardi would fit the Orioles, in many different respects, not the least of which is that he is the kind of high-profile, no-nonsense type that appeals to owner Peter Angelos, Buster Olney writes. Blog Insider

Perlozzo was victimized by an underachieving bullpen and a punchless offense that ranks last in the AL in home runs. Baltimore was 27-27 and second in the AL East on May 31 before losing 13 of 15, including the final eight games of a 1-8 homestand that ended Sunday.

After Sunday's 6-4 loss to Arizona on Sunday, there was talk in the clubhouse of Perlozzo's imminent dismissal. Several players publicly defended him, including Kevin Millar, who called for a players-only meeting in San Diego on Tuesday.

"Sam Perlozzo doesn't throw the ball and doesn't catch the ball. We know that for sure, right? He doesn't hit the ball," Millar said. "He doesn't play. We play. And we've got to find a way to play better."

Baltimore is 122-164 under Perlozzo and finished fourth in the AL East last season. Perlozzo was the Orioles' bench coach from 2001 until replacing Mazzilli as manager.

Girardi is currently a baseball analyst for Fox and for Yankees broadcasts on the YES network. He began his playing career with the Cubs in 1989 and won World Series rings with the Yankees in 1996, 1998 and 1999.

Last offseason, Girardi indicated he was in no rush to return to managing when he turned down an offer to be the Washington Nationals' new manager, a job that went to Mets coach Manny Acta.

With one of baseball's skimpiest payrolls (approximately $14 million), Girardi managed the Marlins into wild-card contention for most of 2006 -- Florida missed the playoffs with a 78-84 record -- and was named NL Manager of the Year. He was unceremoniously fired days at the conclusion of the season by owner Jeffrey Loria. The two had been at odds since having a vocal argument that August.

Baltimore is seeking to end a franchise-record run of nine straight losing seasons. Since Davey Johnson took the Orioles to the playoffs in 1997, Ray Miller, Mike Hargrove, Mazzilli and Perlozzo have failed to produce so much as a .500 record.

Buster Olney is a senior writer for ESPN The Magazine. The Associated Press contributed to this report."

I would think that Mazzone is gone after this year, but if he isn't Girardi/Mazzone would be a hell of a coaching staff.

I disagree. I think that everything begins with your starting pitching. We have the makings of a great starting staff with Bedard, Loewen, and Guthrie. Benson will be our #4 starter next year and Trachsel at #5. I think you move DC to the pen and groom him as a closer (it's too hard to be an effective starter with only two pitches, but you can be an effective closer). That means Ray, Burres, and Bradford get most of the innings in short relief.

Now, if we could just fix that offense...

I was at the game on Friday night against the Dbacks. Bedard was dominant through 6 innings striking out 9. Then the bullpen blew it in the 8th.

In other news, Girardi is still negotiating and things are looking good.

"They have agreed to agree, but there is no agreement".
