So, who exactly was it that decided to succeed and what specific right were they succeeding over? I mean, you do realize there was a specific state's right in the mix here, right?

And the poor farmers didn't decided to wage the war, they went along to protect their home and fight for what was familiar.

This is similar to when a Marxist guerilla army fights. You think they give two shits about Marxism? No, they're protecting their home. Now the deciders, the descision-makers, they were Marxists.

Just as the deciders in the South were pro-state's rights...to hold slaves, among other things. Now, what other right caused the fire storm? there had to be something that started it all, no?

Was slavery on the way out? Well, it would have been eventually. The economic sanctions that would have occured against such an immoral, reprehensible act by all other nations would have crushed the South's economy.

And the first post made me laugh. Long live!

It makes sense when the consumer has the monopoly

In this case, monopolies did equal cheaper.

Think about the Boston Tea Party. The tea that was thrown overboard was actually cheaper and superior.

(Wrong time period? Same thing though, right?)

Britain had a substantial textile industry, and was actually experiencing a sizable cotton shortage at the time of the Civil War. Long-term India would likely have met their needs, but there was tremendous demand for Southern cotton. This is part of why Jefferson Davis was initially hopeful of foreign intervention, the prospect worried Lincoln, who sought the opportunity to issue the Emancipation Proclamation.

In fact, England did not want to act militarily, and France would not intervene without England.

the CSA successfully secedes

they join the entente

the US in turn joins the alliance

Germany wins WWI

Nazi Germany never forms

^It's funny you should ask...

If the South woulda won, we'da had it made.
I'd probably run for president of the Southern States.
The day Elvis passed away would be our national holiday.
If the South woulda won, we'da had it made!

I'd make my Surpreme Court down in Texas,
And we wouldn't have no killers gettin' off free.
If they were proven guilty, then they would swing quickly
Instead of writin' books and smilin' on TV!

We'd all learn Cajun cookin' in Louisiana,
And I'd put that Capitol back in Alabama.
We'd put Florida on the right track 'cause we'd take Miami back
And throw all them pushers in the slammer!

Oh, if the South woulda won, we'da had it made!
I'd probably run for president of the Southern States.
The day young Skynyrd died we'd show our Southern pride.
If the South woulda won, we'da had it made!

(A little Dixieland, boys...ah, yes...)

I'd have all the whiskey made in Tennessee
And all the horses raised in those Kentucky hills.
The National Treasury would be in Tupelo, Mississippi,
And I'd put Hank Williams' picture on one hundred dolla' bills!

I'd have all the cars made in the Carolinas,
And I'd ban all the ones made in China.
I'd have every girl-child sent to Georgia to learn to smile
And talk with that Southern accent that drives me wild!

I'd have all my fiddles made in Virginia
'Cause they sure can make 'em sound so fine.
I'm going up on Wolverton Mountain and see ole Clifton Clowers
And have a sip of his good ole Arkansas wine!

Hey, if the South woulda won, we'da had it made.
I'd probably run for president of the Southern States.
When Patsy Cline passed away, that would be our national holiday.
If the South woulda won, we'da had it made!

I said if the South woulda won, we'da had it made!

(Might even be better off...)

"i never said that the *north* went to war to fight for the slaves freedom. anyone who says that is wrong. The north went to war to keep the south from seceding.

i said the SOUTH pushed for SECESSION due to the singular most important issue, Slavery, the institution was being forced by abolitionists to be outlawed in the western states as they joined the union, thus outnumbering the slave states in Congress.

sure there were other issues, and the whole thing was packaged under states' rights to sell it to the common man who didnt have any interest in the slave economy. But make no mistake, it was slavery that drove the southern push for secession."

interesting analysis. i'd like to take it as gospel truth and being inserting it into my conversations about the civil war, but before I do, do you have any geocities pages you could link me to that back up this argument?

I've read that it would have abolished slavery by the 1880s, joined the Entente w/ Britain and France, causing the US to side w/ Germany, and thus tiliting the war to the Alliance, making Germany the power of Europe and the controller of Belgium and the border lands w/ France by treaty. even then, it would have been an international paraiah, like Rhodesia or South Africa, until probably the 70s or 80s, even w/o slavery, since there would have been no strong central gov. to step in and end Jim Crow.

Either that, or the US would have reconquered it later on since it was so hard for them to field a national army twice, what with so many states clamoring for control and state's rights. the army would have been disunited and underfunded, and thus overwhelmed by the US, probably around the time of the Spanish-American War.
