In Japan, firearms are totally banned, yet their suicide rate is considerably higher than ours.

What makes you think firearms are 'quick' and painless? There have been people to survive shooting themselves in the head. Gunfire is not a way Id want to go.

Here's a better question.

If someone wants to make the choice not to live, why stop them?

maybe they aren't seeing the big picture. a lot of times these people have a very narrow view, and don't understand what else is out there. of course you can't stop someone that is fully intent on doing it, but you certainly can help them see things in a different light.

The Rainy Day

The day is cold, and dark, and dreary ;
It rains, and the wind is never weary ;
The vine still clings to the mouldering wall,
But at every gust the dead leaves fall,
And the day is dark and dreary.

My life is cold, and dark, and dreary ;
It rains, and the wind is never weary ;
My thoughts still cling to the mouldering Past,
But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,
And the days are dark and dreary.

Be still, sad heart ! and cease repining ;
Behind the clouds is the sun still shining ;
Thy fate is the common fate of all,
Into each life some rain must fall,
Some days must be dark and dreary.

- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

^^ agreed, but I was meaning more from a legal/political standpoint.

Certainly, if i had a friend that i thought was going to commit suicide, i'd do everything I could to stop them.

RIP Stiletto - he took me to the firing range for the first time and I didn't even know him except for those few hours a month or two ago.

How about we not debate the morality of suicide or gun control. I think very few people here actually could identify with the mentality of such a situation where one is so depressed they want to end their life. Lets not bash anyone for being so called "selfish."

its not exactly like that. and i really dont think its anything like that for parents who lose a child. i know when you lose a parent there are some loose ends that have to be tied up as far as credit goes like running ads in the paper asking anyone who is owed money by the deceased to come forward. but i think thats only if there is an estate involved. hell it might be the same, but im pretty sure if you charge up a bunch of shit and die, your folks arent gonna be responsible unless you own something and leave it to them and the credit card company tries to make you sell it to pay them.

There's plenty from people talking to his room mate and parents. Trust me, it's not a joke. I'm actually rather glad it hasn't been all over the media.

Please, for the last time, stop debating his choices and those of his friends. There were people calling all afternoon. His body was found around 4 pm in Wilmington, and he must've started driving soon after posting that thing in his LJ. Either way, I called his phone and his apartment to no avail. You're all being pretty big douchebags to argue over the specific cause of a dead boy's corpse.

I remember him through dance! Rest in PEACE Frank Chen. You will be deeply missed

This is so sad...I think this makes us realize a couple of things: that we dont fully appreciate something, or someone until it's / they're gone. and we dont realize the fragility of our own lives, and those people close to us.. or not close to us. so make sure you cherish each day of a person's life.

This is terrible. I know this is tww, and the majority of the users are disrespectful jerks, but this is someone's loss of life. Whether he did it himself or not shouldn't matter, he was still a human being and most of you people are proving what complete asses you are. I shouldn't be surprised, I saw how alot of y'all reacted to jackleg's Dad passing away, and that was repulsive; but even more of you are being disgusting about this. And alot of y'all are being hypocrites. Saying "you should have known, you should have tried to stop it", but where were you when your friend tried to? Where were you when your friend thought about it? Where were you when your friend did it?
(No, that don't apply to all of you, but I know it applies to some of you.)

At the end of the day committing suicide is still a selfish act.

He seemed like a decent guy but that whole "do not say bad things about the dead" thing isn't reserved for those who commit suicide.

It may or may not be a selfish act. People shouldn't judge either way. We are not in any position to judge anyone on their own acts.

As far as WRAL, the media never reports on suicides because statistically that can lead to more suicides as people get the idea into their heads, or so I'm told in a psych class. In any case...

That's the most absurd thing I've ever read. People who commit suicide aren't doing it out of resentment or to prove a point to anyone, they do it because they really feel like it's the best thing for everyone, they think that they're a burden on people's lives and that suicide is a way to make other people happy. It's not the best way, obviously, but they think it's the only way.

some people have thought about it though, some people have talked to people who have thought about it. You don't have to commit suicide to know what the person is going through right before.

i think all the self-congratulating in this thread is so awesome

hold on,

i want to try it

IM THE ONLY DECENT HUMAN BEING ON THIS EARTH BESIDES THE DEAD KID, YOU ARE ALL SO DISRESPECTFUL AND I AM THE OPPOSITE OF THAT

GOD LOOK AT YOURSELVES

LATER ON I WILL MAKE A FOLLOW UP POST TO REEXPERIENCE THE OVERWHELMING SELF SATISFACTION I JUST GOT FROM TELLING EVERYONE HOW AWFUL THEY ARE FOR DISCUSSING THIS RATHER THAN OFFERING CONDOLENCES

LOOK AT MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

p.s. on the real? suicide, while a terrible tragedy, is extremely selfish and i can't respect anyone who does it.

(BUT I DONT HAVE TO CAUSE HE DEAD, PLUS I DIDNT KNOW HIM).

Jesus, this is aweful. I done said a prayer for him.

And by the way, I have made several semi-attempts and reached out before each one to trusted friends. One told me that it was selfish, and that's actually what's kept me alive, that and my faith in God. For what it's worth.

RIP, dude. Wish you could have waited till you got some help for yourself.

When I was much younger, I attempted suicide more than once, all by overdose (btw, the main method used by women). First time, I was pretty bad off, but made it through.
The second time? First example of what has proven to be a freakishly high tolerance to medication of just about any sort.

Looking back, my state of mind, complete and utter lack of clear, rational though, and single-faceted emotional state scares the shit out of me. I still sometimes have nightmares pertaining to those days.

So even more than the obvious tragedy here, I'm pitying him because of the state you have to be in to kill yourself.

I'm bipolar, and I am very lucky. Just by preventive maintenance and paying close attention, I'm able to get along without medication more than 90% of the time. I do not like taking meds. In the course of a depressive episode, I'll typically find myself eyeing death more and more, and it's at that point that I decide it's time for a short course of wellbutrin (works well for me, and the concern for overcorrection into mania is much less than with most anti-depressants).

So it's a given that I feel sorry for his family and friends for having to go through this, but I also pity him quite a bit for ever having been so badly off. Noting that it's not fun is an understatement

I wish he'd been able to take whatever help was offered to him, and realize it was worth taking.

There was a time when I thought I'd have him forever. He's the only reason that my life is where it is today. I owe him a lot. He was one of the best friends I ever had and I only wish I could have loved him enough. I wish I had stayed longer and tried harder. And maybe it was selfish of him. But he deserves to have one selfish moment. He was one of the most selfless people I ever had the pleasure of knowing. He's irreplaceable in many of our lives. I hope that he has finally found peace.
