According to this article the PS3 is the reason for the delay. The 360 version was going to be finished on time, but since the PS3 is so hard to develop for and they are contractually obligated to release both versions at the same time, they had to delay both.
Just another reason to hate on the PS3. Fuckin Sony. 8/3/2007 9:51:47 AM |

That article was written by an analyst named Michael Pachter. He has no connection to Take 2, Rockstar, Sony, or Microsoft. He's just a guy who makes predictions based on really nothing but his own opinion. If you'd actually followed the development of GTAIV, you'd know that to a man, everyone who's actually played the game or watched a live demo has noted how poorly it ran. Keep in mind, it's been shown running almost exclusively on the 360. There is absolutely nothing to back up what this guy his saying.

How the hell does showing the game running like ass on the 360, lend any credence to the theory that they've had trouble developing it on the PS3? All it tells us is that the game runs like ass on the 360, nothing more. 8/3/2007 10:13:29 AM |

Let's get this out of the way now because it's the least fair criticism I have to make. If you can find me someone, anywhere, saying that Rockstar does not have a working demo of the PS3 version, then fine. But right now, all we now is that the 360 definitely had serious performance issues running the game, and those issues were at least partially responsible from the delay of the game.
I hope I don't have to point out how huge of a logical fallacy it is to infer that because the PS3 is hard to develop for, that it is the root cause of the development problems for this one specific case. You ever consider that it might be because they are struggling to get everything running off a 9GB disc on a console with no hard drive to pre-cache data? Nah, I'm sure that can't be it...... 8/3/2007 10:37:55 AM |

^^ Who the hell said they haven't gotten a ps3 demo to work yet? They just have not been showing any PS3 demos to anyone. Seriously, use your brain. You go (went) to college right?
That said, the guys at Rockstar said the PS3 game was about 2-3 weeks behind the 360 version:
Quote : | "The demo which was shown is from the Xbox 360 version of the game. The PlayStation 3 version is still “a week or two behind,” according to Rockstar. The build shown is 5 weeks old, and the frame rate has improved considerably since the last demo." |
http://gamers-creed.com/?p=121.
That is a little less than 6 months or however long its actually going to be delayed.
This game is huge, and thankfully Take Two is going to make this thing the best it can be, inspite of the huge delay.

^^ Good point man. If you really want to argue something, argue how much better this game would be utilizing a the massive space of a blu ray disc and not having to constrain it to a dvd, not to mention the issues incurred by not being able to utilize hard drive space (maybe they will tweak it for the PS3, but I doubt it). 8/3/2007 10:43:05 AM |

So if the trouble is with the 360 version, why are they not showing the Ps3 version at all?
Where is your evidence that there are any less problems on the ps3? Or even that they have a running version? 8/4/2007 5:19:16 PM |

If there were a problem, I would see it being with the Xbox.
The PS3 GPUs can push more vertices than the Xbox (smoother lines), but it can't have as many textures going at the same time (and textures is what most people perceive as graphical quality anyway).
On the other hand, the PS3's CPUs are FAR more suited to running many computer AIs (civilians, cars, etc.) as well as calculating weather effects than the Xbox's, which is a much harder problem to overcome than having to use a few lower-res textures or less vertices.

^^That's exactly my point. There is no evidence on the PS3 version. It may be running perfectly, it may not be running at all (although, that's not very likely given comments directly from Rockstar), or anything inbetween. All we do know is that the 360 version was definitely witnessed as running poorly. Which is why it was kind of silly for El Nachó to post some guys opinion that the PS3 is the reason for the delay as if it were absolute fact. 8/4/2007 5:28:01 PM |

If it was running any better than the 360 version, do you not think that would be the version they showed? 8/4/2007 5:37:50 PM |
Shrike All American 9594 Posts user info edit post |
And if the 360 version was on track for an October release (two months away), don't you think they would have been able to show us a demo without horrendous graphical problems? See, we can do this all day long. We don't know any of the reasons for the delays other than what the people developing the game have told us.
Quote : | ""With Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar is setting a new standard for next generation video games," said Strauss Zelnick, Chairman of Take-Two in a press release. Certain elements of development proved to be more time-intensive than expected, especially given the commitment for a simultaneous release on two very different platforms. We all recognize that perfecting the game is vital and I can assure everyone it will be worth the wait. We owe it to the game's millions of fans, to our dedicated development team, and to our shareholders to make sure that Grand Theft Auto IV is a groundbreaking gaming experience that takes maximum advantage of next generation technology."" |
Anything beyond that are just guesses and assumptions.

I never said they were on track for October release.
But I don't think it's the 360 that's holding them back, if I had to guess I'd say they have to do a lot of things for both systems, but the 360 version is better and more presentable right now, because it's the one they presented. 8/4/2007 5:49:31 PM |

How can you guys sit here and debate what a game runs like that isnt even out.
You want to see some frame rate drops?
Load up motorstorm demo or heavenly sword. Or NCAA 08 on the 360 and wait for the play calling menu to load up.
My fucking girlfriend even asked why it was happening. You can be all the graphics are great!!1 but that shit is annoying. Its why when it happens on a PC you get the damn hint, and get a better video card or drop the resolution.

I don't think you can say "huge disappointment" until you see the in-game play.
You have to realize, the system is drawing a LOT of polygons there for the massive city and cars and people, not to mention running the AI for all those people.
I predict it'll be very impressive once its released.
It looks like they didn't use motion capture though for the animations, so the movements look kind of awkward in the cutscenes.
I wonder though if it will play better on the Xbox of PS3. I haven't bought a system yet, and I'd buy whichever one this runs best one. 12/6/2007 3:55:34 PM |

GTA was never impressive in the graphics because it was such an in-depth game that requires a lot of power to run (if it had cutting edge graphics). Its not like they don't have the artists to make it next-gen graphics but we just don't have a console/discs capable of running such shenanigans.

^^That's fine but you can't have shitty graphics and shitty FPS. The game in that video doesn't look nearly good enough to be that choppy.

you're comparing those graphics to games that can pull it off because they don't have 10000000 things going on at once.
Compare that to GTA 3 and you'll see 'next gen' in that genre.
You aren't going to get a GTA with GT 5 graphics on this generation of consoles.

I care that the graphics look dated, and its still a slideshow.
There is nothing going on in most of that video. It's all pre-cooked cutscenes with a handful of models on the screen and no AI. Anything less than 30 FPS should be considered a bug. 12/6/2007 4:42:32 PM |

People don't play GTA games because they have better graphics than Call of Duty 4 or Gears or Halo 3 or whatever
they play them because you can mindlessly shoot anyone, and generally do all types of stupid ass shit that if you ever did in real life you'd probably either end up dead or in jail
does it matter that the objects you pick up in Beautiful Katamari are shitty little polygons with no shading? No because they have to do that for scale when your shit gets to be a million kilometers wide...GTA has so much depth as far as huge detailed maps, and in GTA4 all the vertical mapping, cutting edge graphics arent the key
bear in mind though...they will definitely be better graphics than San Andreas, considering this is the 360 and SA came out on PS2 and regular XBOX 12/6/2007 4:54:46 PM |

gta graphics have never looked current gen, and its an artistic reason for that. the game is so huge that is it probably impossible to have current gen graphics drawn in the game, but due to what seems to be a sacrifice of visual quality you get in return a game that is chock full of everything from slappin hoes to stealing a plane from a military base - when was the last time you ever heard a black guy doing all of the stuff that cj did?! 12/6/2007 6:56:52 PM |
