Yeah I could see that happening, but I'm just not sold on Dino as a head coach. His previous head coaching doesn't give me much indication that he will do well at Wake. I know Army and Loyola (MD) aren't exactly basketball powers in their conferences, but Skip was able to get Loyola to the NCAA tournament in his only year there, while Dino had a terrible record there. I guess I was kind of afraid to put BC too low b/c they have seemed to come out and surprise people these past two years, but then again they did lose ACC POY Jared Dudley and that asshat Sean Marshall. Now thinking more about it, Miami should be higher considering all that returns. As for FSU, I have no confidence in Leonard Hamilton as a head coach. He could have coached the Bulls when they had Pippen and Jordan, and still probably not made the playoffs. I mean that guy had 2003's No. 1 ranked recruiting class and didn't go to one single NCAA tournament with those players. FSU seriously needs to fire him and get a better coach. They could easily go out and get a young coach out of one of the mid-major programs and bump their success up a great deal.

Yeah Hamilton had the best player in the ACC the last 2 years and still can't make the dance. He recruits great but his teams play like a bunch of dumbasses. Miami started playing better at the end of last year and they got Anthony King back for a 6th year. Remember they had like 5/6 people hurt all year. Not sure what their recruiting class looks like but I think Haith is doing a decent job so far. BC also lost Sean Williams and they basically have Ty Rice and a bunch of role players. Virginia Tech only has Deron Washington and AD Vassailo back because Dowdell, Collins, Sailes, and Gordon are gone.

Yeah when I start looking around at the ACC teams for next year, I begin to feel a lot better and thankful that the only position we have a ? at is PG. I know that the PG is the most important position, but we have 3 options next year, so we should be able to find at least one decent ballhandler out of the lot. Hearing Sid talk about our PGs for next year makes me happy actually. Lowe seems happy to have three guys that can change the look of the team. If we want to go athletic and run throw Degand in there. If we want to grind it out and go big, throw Johnson in there. Not sure about Gonzalez yet. Atsur was great for us last year (in fact his entire time at State), but he was really recruited to be a SG for us. Then the next season we've got Julius Mays coming in who is supposed to be good as well. Perhaps we'll end up having at least 2 guards that are awesome for us, like UVA did with Reynolds and Singletary. Then who could forget Lethal Weapon 3 at Georgia Tech. That team was incredible. Those three averaged over 20 points a game for the regular season.

The NCAA Executive Committee has approved a new seating configuration that will increase capacity to about 70,000 at the Men’s Final Four beginning in 2009, creating sections that will put thousands of students courtside for the national championship.

The NCAA will purchase temporary seating to be transported and installed at all Final Four sites. The system will be used at various regional dome sites as dress rehearsals for the following year’s Final Four.

The plan provides each of the four teams with student-body representation immediately adjoining the court at the end lines – through the use of a heavily discounted voucher system that is being developed – which officials say will enhance the atmosphere at the Final Four. The configuration also retains the current media sideline seating (BOOOO!!, THERE IS NO REASON WHY THAT MANY MEMBERS OF THE MEDIA HAVE TO BE TAKING UP PRIME SEATING ).

The host facility for the 2009 Final Four, Ford Field in Detroit, will be the first site to use the configuration. A similar model was used there in 2003 for a regular-season game between the University of Kentucky and Michigan State University that attracted an NCAA-record attendance of 78,129. NCAA and CBS Sports representatives attended the game to evaluate logistics and obtain fan reaction. Fans even in the farthest reaches were pleased with their ability to view the game either on the court or on giant flat-screen televisions placed strategically in the upper confines.

The 2010 Final Four will be at the newly constructed Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, while the 2011 event is at Reliant Stadium in Houston. Both sites will employ the new configuration. Future Final Four sites have not been announced, but the new seating configuration will be used at subsequent sites.

Ford Field, Lucas Oil Stadium and Reliant Stadium host regionals in 2008, 2009 and 2010, respectively.

Officials estimate the configuration could generate about $4 million per year in additional revenues while creating a more student-centered event and increasing membership inclusion.

The NCAA used a similar configuration for the first time in the 1982 championship game at the Louisiana Superdome between Georgetown University and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. That contest attracted 61,612 fans, a record that was eclipsed five years later when 64,959 people packed the Superdome for the 1987 final between Syracuse University and Indiana University, Bloomington.

The Division I Men’s Basketball Committee set the minimum seating capacity for the Final Four at 40,000 in 2003. The finals have been conducted at domed stadiums since 1997.

Houston defeated UCLA 71-69, snapping UCLA's 47 game winning streak. It was held in the Astrodome and 53,000 people showed up, even though no one had a good seat. They decided to put the court in the middle of the dome. This was the first game to be held in a dome, which is now commonplace for Final Fours. I wish they would show it sometime on ESPN Classic rather than the World Series of Poker from 1998 and some PBA bowling championship from 1992. Why doesn't ESPN what a great thing ESPN Classic could be if they just showed things that a lot of people would like to see? I'd love to see a "24 Hours of the Greatest College Basketball Games of All Time" marathon.

A few days ago they were showing NBA games with high scoring performances. It was the first time I saw Kobe drop 81 against the Raptors. Other than having Toronto's commentator's, it was pretty cool. They also showed MJ drop 69 (I think) against the cavs.

GT Center Dickey Academically Ineligible

Georgia Tech will play the first part of theseason without senior center Ra'Sean Dickey, who was ruledacademically ineligible for the fall semester.

Dickey will have to get his grades up if he hopes to rejoin theteam after the end of the semester in mid-December, coach PaulHewitt said Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets did get some good news as junior guard Lewis Clinch was ruled eligible to rejoin the team. He sat out most oflast season for violating the school's honor code.

The 6-foot-9 Dickey started 23 games last year. He was GeorgiaTech's fourth-leading scorer (8.1 points per game) andsecond-leading rebounder (5.3 per game), while tying for the teamlead in field goal percentage (59.6).

"Ra'Sean realizes he has fallen short on his academicresponsibilities and knows he has work to do in the fall in orderto play," Hewitt said

oh yeah, about your big XII question..

i'm a grad student at Colorado as of next monday. They sell student tickets here....it was $120 for 50-yd line football tickets for the season (six home games, i think) ..and another $20 for basketball season tix (~14 home games...)

I bought the basketball tix just for the home games we have against Kansas and Oklahoma. I don't know jack about big XII ball, but I sorta followed it last season, when they had a bunch of good teams. Is TAMU supposed to fall off the map this season?

If I remember correctly Tarver was initially ruled academically ineligible at the beginning of the Spring semester, I remember so b/c I watched the game over the MLK holiday up at my roommate's place in the mountains near Boone. Apparently his grandmother or some other person close to him died or was dying. They said that that caused the slippage in grades. He was reinstated by GT just a little bit later after they learned all the details. The story goes that the students behind the GT bench held up signs with the alphabet on them, without the letter F I think, and said a number of things, like said above, and someone said something to the effect of, "hey Tarver can you even read this" or "hey Tarver can you find the missing letter" and Hewitt whipped around and yelled at the students, "hey fuck you that's classless." That's the story I heard from people that were there. Some media asked Hewitt about the incident and he said that he shouldn't have lost his cool, yada, yada, yada. Then Gregg Doyell comes in that week and said that our students were classless and didn't have much room to talk, since Tarver was going to Georgia Tech, a supposed harder school, when Tarver was actually majoring in something incredibly easy. Just b/c someone goes to say Harvard, doesn't mean that they are majoring in something hard. Tarver would never have gotten into Georgia Tech if he wasn't a great athlete. Now there are many student-athletes though that could have gotten into their respective schools though, but Tarver isn't one of them.

Premature Preseason ACC 2007-2008 Hoops Rankings

This will be a transition year for most of the ACC. Pretty much everyone took a hit this offseason, with only four teams really looking like locks for the NCAA tournament. There is little doubt that North Carolina will be the favorite ... but remember that this was the case last year ... and UNC was nearly the #5 seed in the ACC tournament. NC State, Duke and Clemson have the best shot at giving the Heels trouble for the title

1-North Carolina: Sometimes subtraction isn't a bad thing. The Heels lose Brandan Wright and Reyshawn Terry, but the rotation should be tighter and everyone more understanding of their roles. If UNC is going to make its title run, they better do it now before Ty Lawson and Tyler Hansbrough bolt.

2-NC State: Brandon Costner is my pick for ACC Player of the Year. With JJ Hickson running alongside him in the paint, Costner is free to show his entire game [similar to how Wright helped Hansbrough last year in Chapel Hill]. This team is ready to break out and get back into the ACC's elite. At issue is finding Engin Atsur's replacement ... since he was so key in the success of the Pack last year.

3-Duke: With Kyle Singler and Taylor King coming in, expect Duke to go back to its gun-slinging ways. Last year's team wasn't normal Duke: they struggled to find their offense and were very inconsistent shooting. The big issue this year is ... well, what happens if they keep missing those threes? Josh McRoberts is gone and there really isn't anyone reliable in the paint to score or rebound.

4-Clemson: Can the Tigers get back that team that was scorching the early part of the season? Well, they have four returning starters and has one of the better frontcourts in the conference. They just need to get their minds right. This team has the talent ... they just need to tighten the bolts and clean the sawdust.

5-Virginia: Dave Leitao better thank God that Sean Singletary came back. The ACC player of the year candidate will be asked to do even more with JR Reynolds and Jason Cain gone.

6-Maryland: Gotta love those Terps! The head-scratchers are gone, with their understudies ready to take their place. The team will rely on James Gist and Greivis Vasquez to become leaders on and off the floor. However, this streaky team must find someone who can hit a shot.

7-Georgia Tech: Tech was ready to take its place back on the national stage. Then the NBA snagged freshmen Thad Young and Javaris Crittenden. Now Tech is a team full of big men and no one around to take the heat off them. One good note: the Jackets get UNC, Duke and NC State only once apiece this year.

8-Boston College: Losing ACC Player of the Year Jared Dudley and Sean Marshall will be tough. Especially for a team that relied on those two [plus Tyrese Rice] for most of their offense last year. Rice is back and may be asked to do everything for the Eagles this year.

9-Miami: Frank Haith did an admirable job fighting during a season that saw his Canes kicked around. There is some talent on this team and a huge chip on their shoulders. They could sneak into the NCAAs.

10-Florida State: With ACC's leading scorer Al Thornton, the Noles underachieved yet again. Now he's gone. Jason Rich and Isaiah Swann could form a decent backcourt, but FSU lacks any kind of inside presence.

11-Wake Forest: This may be the calm before the storm. The Deacs were awful for most of last season before winning four down the stretch. Kyle Visser is gone and the big recruiting class is a year away. This is the year the other guys get their chance to show what they've got.

12-Virginia Tech: Ugh. Only four scholarship players are coming back from a team that nearly won the ACC last year.

On the contrary I think that the ACC may see a Final Four team this year, and hopefully it's the team sporting the Red & White. Think about this, Sid won 3 straight games in three days (all against quality teams; all 3 were NCAA teams), and gave Carolina a scare on the fourth day. This all with playing two walk ons at some point in the tournament, and Atsur starting to feel pain in his hamstring, so much that he had to leave one game for a little while to get it stretched out and rubbed. Winning 3 straight games would get us into the elite eight. In the NCAA Tournament you play the games with some rest, whether that be a days rest in between games on the weekend, or a whole weeks rest in between sites. I have confidence in Sid and our players. I can't wait to see them play this season.

Even if the ACC does get a Final Four team this year, I think it's hard for any of the conferences to live up to the talent that was in college basketball in the 2006-2007 season. Durant, Oden, Law, Tucker, Conley, Wright (UNC), Wright (Kansas), Aaron Brooks (Oregon), Afflalo, the whole Florida starting five, etc. Last year was an insanely talent-rich basketball season, full of great players.

NC State Releases Men's Basketball Schedule

Raleigh, N.C. – The NC State men’s basketball team will face 10 teams that advanced to last years NCAA Tournament this upcoming season, as the ACC and NC State announced the Wolpack’s 2007-08 schedule on Thursday afternoon.

In addition to the 10 NCAA Tournament teams, the Pack’s schedule features three more teams that competed in the NIT, and NC State will have at least 23 games on TV.

“The schedule speaks for itself this season, it is a very tough, challenging one,” said head coach Sidney Lowe. “The ACC once again stacks up as one of the top conferences in the country. In addition, we have a stretch of five straight games in late November away from Raleigh, so that should provide another challenge for our team.”

For the first time since the ACC went through expansion, NC State will face the other three ACC teams from North Carolina both home and away. In addition to playing Duke, North Carolina and Wake Forest in a home-and-home series this season, the Pack will also play Clemson and Florida State twice. The Pack starts ACC league play January 12 at North Carolina.

NC State will be taking part in the second annual Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Florida, over the Thanksgiving weekend. The Pack will play three games in four days, starting with Rider, then facing either Penn State or South Carolina the next day. Other teams participating are, Villanova, Central Florida, George Mason, and Kansas State.

“We are excited to be playing down in Orlando over Thanksgiving,” said Lowe. “The tournament features some very good teams from other top conferences, and playing three games in four days will give us a good feel for postseason play.”

Other non-conference highlights include playing at Michigan State in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, as well as traveling to both East Carolina and Seton Hall. The Pack will also host Davidson and Cincinnati the weekend before Christmas in home non-conference action.

NC State will once again play two exhibition contests, this year both are against in-state schools. The first will be against Division II National Champion Barton College on November 1, then November 6 against UNC Pembroke.

Fans will have two opportunities to come out and see the Wolfpack before the two exhibition games. NC State will welcome fans back to Reynolds Coliseum on Friday, October 19 at 9:00 p.m. for Ballin’ at the Old Barn. The Wolfpack will then hold its annual Red/White Scrimmage on Saturday, October 27 at the RBC Center before the Virginia football game.

Gavin's talking about competing for the National Championship in Lowe's 2nd year as head coach isn't that far of a stretch. Remember Valvano was only in his 3rd year when he won it all. Lowe has the fans and players believing that we are on the verge of something special. We will soon take our place back in college basketball's elite, and stay there for years to come. GO STATE!!!

Lowe is NC State. To be an NC State fan is to be the definition of a fan. Not some horseshit walmart fans from UNC. If he leaves, its because the fan base has grown tired of him.(wont happen)

In response to Gavin's comments, over on IC the Hole fans are being their typical arrogant selves, but over on TDD (Duke's board) they are being a little more level headed and think we will be good, maybe not only 4 losses good, but top 4 in the ACC. Many think it will be hard for UNC to sweep the regular season with us. One poster posted this good comment:
