I also got chased by a dog for the first time on that run. Though he seemed content to chase me at the same speed I was running, so I figured if he didn't really want to start sprinting, then neither would I. He got bored after about a half mile. 9/8/2008 11:03:12 AM |

ran 6.2 miles in about 1:11 last week, that's slow, but it was a trail run at 8,500ft elevation
ran 3.6 last night in 32m, still not terribly fast, but I do better on a path at 5,280ft
this Friday/Saturday is the Colorado Relay. (170 mile, 10-person team, 24-hours straight)
I found out what legs I'm running: "Lung Buster" - Guanella Pass Campground to Guanella Pass - Moderate 2.19 miles 10,800ft to 11,700 ft. elevation (+880 ft.) http://www.coloradorelay.com/maps/ind-legs/08-legbook-L03.pdf
"Quad Work" - Vail Pass to E. Vail - Very Hard 8.7 miles 10,600ft to 8,800 ft. elevation (-1,848 ft.) http://www.coloradorelay.com/maps/ind-legs/08-legbook-L13.pdf
"Canyon View" - Bair Ranch Rest Area to Shosone Rest Area - Moderate 6.1 miles 6,100ft to 6,100 ft. elevation (-226 ft.; +182 ft.) http://www.coloradorelay.com/maps/ind-legs/08-legbook-L23.pdf
this... is... going... to.... suck.
i think when this is done i'm picking up swimming or biking.

So I have a few questions.
I used to run in high school for wrestling. I have never been a great runner, but I was always OK. Then I joined the Navy and we have to run 1.5 miles for our physical readiness test. When I was 18, I did it around 10:00, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. As I have gotten older, I have gotten really bad. Now I run it in like 13:00. I want to get better, and I want to lose a little bit of weight too.
I have been running on a treadmill I bought. I started last week and am running every other day. Each session, I have run for 45 minutes, the first at a 6.0 mph pace, the next 6.2 mph, and so on. I want to mythodically find out my breaking point and go from there. I imagine it will be about 7.0 mph, maybe a bit more that I can actually maintain for 45 minutes.
1. Is this a good technique? I imagine that since I am training for the ultimate goal of hitting around 10:00 again, I should do a few 15 minute runs on a pace that is much quicker.
2. Are there any supplements that can make me get tired slower and/or increase weight loss? I have started taking Hydroxycut, and it seems like it might be doing something.
3. What about those "5-hr energy drinks"? Yes/No/Maybe?
4. How well does treadmill running translate to road running?
Thanks a bunch! 12/22/2008 2:52:23 AM |

I like New Balance. Friend that I run with likes Adidas. Ive been trying to run a bit over break on a treadmill. I normally bike all over campus (eg like 10 miles a day, and some long stuff on weekends), but as its been cold (I hate cold) Ive been walking or taking the bus. Doing about 2miles about 2-3 times/week. I wanna actually run completely the KKC here in a bit. Any one else just training for it? 12/23/2008 10:51:20 AM |

What are your goals? You should probably do both, the best way to get better is mixing it up. But again, it depends on your goal.12/23/2008 11:50:24 AM |

I really like Asics, I use to run in Addias because they both have a wide toe box. But a lot of people's feet are different, so I would go , like baonest suggested and get fitted. You honestly don't want to run in shoes that don't feel right for your feet.
As far as running workouts to improve yourself, I would consider if you wanna work on speed or distance or possibly both.
I am definitely a distance runner and I always enjoy the sound of Lance Armstrong as he tells me after my workouts on my ipod how I achieved a personal best record so I generally do both. I switch up my workouts: some days I'll do shorter distance and work on speed and some days I take it easy and work on distance. But honestly, I think to prevent yourself from plateauing switching up your workouts is good no matter what your are achieving.
If you sign up for 5K races and half marathons and marathons and such, that'll push you to work out more too. Eating habits also make a difference. A good diet will give you plenty of energy to do what you want hope this helps 12/24/2008 11:48:22 AM |

I don't have a specific goal, but a "general" goal is to be able to run a 10k at a pretty fast pace. I'm not sure what pace specifically, but I'll keep pushing myself until I feel satisfied. I don't want to run marathons or anything.12/26/2008 2:10:02 PM |

I signed up for the City of Oaks marathon a few minutes ago. Figure if I'd give myself almost a year to train for this. Goal is to qualify for Boston. This will also be my first marathon....or any race over 10k.
Should be an interesting year 12/27/2008 5:30:13 PM |

What's a good training program for me to follow for this year's City of Oaks marathon?
These were my times about 5 years ago when I was running a LOT: 16:10 5k 9:25 3200m 4:30 1600m 1:55 800m 0:53 400m
I havent been on a strict running schedule since then though. Would prolly run about a 19 minute 5k right now, but I respond quickly to training and feel I could improve a lot in a short time.
My goal is to beat 3:10:00 in the City of Oaks this year. Pretty sure I just want to be building a nice base right now, with minimal speedwork, and start turning up the speed/hill work in the closing 4 months of my training leading up to the marathon....but I really have no idea. 12/29/2008 9:42:06 AM |

Quote : | "I'm somewhat new to running...I've been running something like 3 months. I generally run about 2 miles, and I'm trying to figure out whether I should start running faster, or for a longer distance." |
What is your time for the 2 miles you're at currently? When I started running, I would make my distance longer first and then work on getting faster at it. So when I got up to 3 miles, I would time myself and try to get faster each time I ran it. Then when I got pretty consistent with my 3 mile time, I would add some more distance to it.
I have been told to add about 10% a week as you're trying to add distance, but as someone else said, you need to look at your goals and add accordingly. It's also good to do some longer distance runs at a slower pace and short runs at a faster pace. You can also go to a track and do speed work, which consists of laps around the track (400m for one lap). There are a lot of training guides out there online you can use, look up Hal Higdon.12/29/2008 9:47:01 AM |

The city of oaks marathon is a hilly marathon to be qualifying for Boston. Good luck. You might try running myrtle beach or kiawah island if you can't get it the first time. Both are after Raleigh and about as flat as you can get.
I used a training program similar to hal higdon's intermediate program for my last marathon a few weeks ago. It's an 18 week program, so you don't have to start till the summer. You will want to build up your mileage to a consistent 25-30 miles per week over the next few months before starting the training though.

Yeah, I know there are plenty of "easier" marathons to qualify for Boston, but I figured the same thing, if I cant do it in Raleigh, I can hit up Myrtle. 12/29/2008 10:27:49 AM |

So, I was at the bookstore last night in Brier Creek looking for a book by Higdon, and started talking to a Moroccan guy who said he coached track over here, and claimed to have run with Hicham El Guerrouj back in the day. This guy knew his stuff.
I just thought it was cool that he (so he claimed) knew El Guerrouj. That is all.

that's true, and usually if you're doing a stair-step program like this, you'll want to come back down every 4th week. i.e. no more than 3 straight weeks of increasing mileage.
I also recommend Hal Higdon's marathon guide http://www.halhigdon.com/marathon/Mar00index.htm He has several levels, and they are straight forward and easy to follow, using basic distance running methods and techniques and nothing "fancy".
If you are a former runner but have not been active for a couple/few years, I would recommend to look through his programs, finding one that "feels right" to you, then choosing the program below that. i.e. if you think Advanced 1 sounds good, go down and do Intermediate 2. Or if Intermediate 1 sounds good, go down to Novice 2. Don't let the "novice" title scare you, either. For your first marathon, it's better to take it safe and don't get injured than shoot for a breakout race and qualifying time.12/31/2008 11:37:07 AM |

Yeah, I guess improving your V02max is useless. 12/31/2008 11:44:54 AM |
agentlion All American 13936 Posts user info edit post |
"sprinting a lot" is useless advice for someone who is training for a marathon. if you want to increase your V02-max, you won't be "sprinting" anyway - 400-800m repeats are not sprints.
Speed-work is important for someone who is, for example, trying to lower their marathon from 2:50 to 2:30. Speed-work is not required at all for someone who is trying their first marathon, or who is going to run 3:00+. At the most, maybe some fartleks or long tempo runs are useful, but no interval work is necessary 12/31/2008 11:55:15 AM |
