Looks like all outbound network accesses are now routed through kernel_task -- which means application-by-application network permissions (a la LittleSnitch) are now pretty much impossible

Supposedly, Leopard has built-in support for per-application firewalling. I vaguely remember reading about this. I bet some app to replicate LittleSNithc's functionality will come along soon enough

Fwiw, while I've not been entirely happy with Vista's performance with gaming, but I haven't had enough blue screens to warrant a complaint about blue screens ... and I notice these things.

Ok, and I have to state a disclaimer ... I'm still not happy with Vista, I've been warning people off of Vista until I can get a look at SP1 Final. I just have to run it so I can be knowledgeable about the OS like I am with XP and all the previous ones before it.

(says the guy who currently runs an XP box, a Vista box, and an Ubuntu box)

i don't know if you can do that, at least for the Dock folders/Stacks. It looks like Stacks folder images default to showing the icon of the first item in that stack, so it's dynamic. Hopefully, though, you can set a permanent icon.

im talkin about the main folder icon, you should be able to change any folder icon. as for the stacks, you're on your own

Just ordered my iMac today. Crabtree and Southpoint were all out of the one I wanted.

Is the disk included a full install disk or is it just an update?
For example - could I format and start fresh instead of an update?

Depends on when the computer shipped -- typically right after an OS release, you get the computer pre-installed with the previous system and a "drop-in" disk that is just the OS update.

So if you wanted to start fresh, you'd boot from the "drop-in" and install the OS, then use the Software Restore CD (which would install 10.4 and all the optional+iLife apps) and use the installer that just does the optional programs.

Part of it is probably just breaking of old habits -- I had my applications folder in the Dock so a right-click would give me an alphabetized start-menu-esque thing to access stuff from. Now it gives me the grid but it takes longer to load, and I can't drill down into folders.

And the stack thing going up to the right just seems bizarre... why not just go straight up?...

All the development goodies make up for it though (for now)

my gf picked up a iMac the day of leopard release and it had a 'drop-in' disc in the box. I did a clean install and after the install I putin the original 10.4 disc to run the optional apps install for iLife 08.

if you have a big enough HDD, why wouldn't you back up everything. Then you can rebuild the entire machine at once if something happens to your main drive.
..... my f'ing copy hasn't shown up from Amazon yet, though, so i haven't done anything with it.

I have big enough external drives but they were both close to capacity. I've spent the last two evenings going through and deleting stuff I don't need anymore and trying to consolidate as much as possible onto one drive so i can use the other for time machine. I'm looking into buying either a 1 TB or 2 TB Western Digital My Book Pro II from newegg. Probably get them in a few weeks. Once I do, you can bet your life that i'll have the entire machine backed up on time machine

hahahaha....pretty crazy when I did a screenshare from my macbook pro to my iMac and then through the screenshare I opened a screenshare from my iMac to my macbook pro. Its hard to navigate lol.
