Yeah I thought that was retarded. It looked like most of the sections were built on the ground- large portions of them at least. Hell, it looked like they built the whole saucer section on the ground. I'd love to see how ridiculous that would look being launched.

I always assumed just the materials were fabricated on earth, but then assembled in orbit...

i never thought entire sections would be built on the ground and then sent into orbit.

on topic though I always pictured the Klingons as imperialistic japanese.

they are brown, kindy squinty eyes, and have the whole war-lord honor and battle deal going.

I think the romulans are more German as they are shady and shit.

From TNG forward, i always thought the different races represented different aspects of human psychologies, not different countries.

I don't know enough about TOS to say either way.

Did no one see Star Trek VI? The Klingons were the Soviets. Star Trek VI is an allegory for the end of the cold war. That movie is about as subtle as the universe exploding.

the whole making peace thing was definetly an allegory but the culture of the klingons seems mostly based on german barbarians and imperialist japanese

^In the next generation sure, but in the original series they were an allegorical representation of the warsaw pact nations (possibly China more than the soviet union.) There was an episode where the Klingons and Kirk were trying to convince this apparent pacifist race of people to take their side. The klingons were using force and occupying the place, the federation was trying to convince them to defend themselves and that their way was the right way. Sounds remarkably like cold war conflicts between members of the warsaw pact and nato doesn't it?

So in this episode the klingons represented the US in such conflicts like Vietnam???

Klingon vs Federation was always an allegory for US vs USSR.

Romulans were allegory for Romans having left Vulcan because they didn't want to give up their emotions and settling the twin worlds of Romulus and Remus. Their rank and file and government copies the Roman system under Augustus.

The rest of it is a bit of a wash.

Anyway, yea, prequels suck but ill probably go see this because I'm a trek faggot.

Judging by the cast list, I'd say a fair bit went into the cast.

The trailer is definitely bad ass though

Not really, Kirk was trying to fight but claimed he was doing it for their own good (the apparently primitive aliens.) Kind of like the cold-war US interviening on behalf of south vietnam and korea. The aliens were actually godlike in power and didn't let real violence actually break out. The point was that both Kirk/federation and the Klingons were basically doing the same thing but the aliens exposed the fact that Kirk and the Federation were deluded into thinking they were inherently better because they were "right." I don't think the Klingons made serious efforts to justify their take-over as being wholy benign, but they did play it off as though they were doing it for the good of the not-so-primitive aliens there and as a pre-emptive strategic defense against federation agression. Very much an allegory of the cold war actions of the Warsaw Pact nations and NATO.

The mistake in analyzing any allegory is trying to match up elements too rigidly. Think of the allegory of the cave- the people in the cave didn't represent specific people to whom Plato referred (though maybe he was making political jabs that are lost to us non-ancient-greeks.) The point of this particular episode was to have the viewer initially identify with kirk (as any fan would be expected to) and side with him. That would make the the ultimate revelation that he and the federation were wrong and, in the grand scheme of things, not so different from the klingons in this instance. Since the audience was American, it stands to reason that they were intended to draw connections between the behavior of the Federation and NATO in this case. Still, that doesn't mean that the Federation is supposed to have been a complete allegorical representation of the US or NATO just as the Klingons were not supposed to be complete and rigid representations of any particular Warsaw Pact nation or Axis power. The Klingons were at times Nazi Germany, the USSR, China, and generic evil empire #22.

^I've heard arguments that they're Ross Perot. Their name is similar to Arabic terms used for european traders. So... they could also be meant to represent the capitolist and materialist elements of western culture. Also, they could just be funny looking buggers whose costumes were made out of discarded MAD Magazine "Alfred E. Neuman" masks.

ORIGINALLY the Ferengi were going to be THE bad guys of TNG. Picard blew up one of their ships, they were supposed to be going after him and so on. For the first half of season one this happened a few times. But people couldn't take them seriously. SO the Borg came along and the Romulans were updated to be bad ass with HUGE ships.

The idea of a single race hell bent of kicking ass for revenge was used for the Kazan in Voyager though.........

If they were going to release promotional images of four characters, and three of them would be Kirk, Spock, and the villian, you would think that the fourth would be McCoy and not Uhura.

Those posters make the movie have all the appeal of a WB TV show aimed at pre-teens. I can almost hear the emo music.
