concealed carry? or just pistol purchase?

Anyone used Glaser safety slugs? Was thinking they'd be better in a rifle than a SP or JHP. It's really odd they sell them by a 6-pack even for rifle, when a 5-pack would be more expected, or a box of ten. They're made basically as shot in a jacket, supposed to be highly frangible, good for soft targets only and not penetrate through a person.

i have been reading about the HK P30 and would like to shoot it. does anyone on here own one or know of a local range that has one for rent yet? also what stores locally are likely to carry this gun?

By far my best gun for the price was a S&W 642 (J-frame hammerless). I slapped a set of crimson trace grips on there and I can carry it with practically anything. FWIW, anyone who is looking for good carry clothing with the J-frame (that doesn't make you look like a wannabe Blackwater operator) you should check out Columbia's GPS khakis. The've got a pocket on the right side where you can keep a speedloader and the pockets are deep and wide, perfect for a J-fram.

Also, some people are milling J-frames so that they can accept a moon-clip, avoiding the need for speed loaders. It is <$100 so I think I'm going to look into it.

I carry a sig pro 229 most of the time, unless I am at a bar or in DC.

There is a petition for airline pilots to have access to a pistol in the cockpit. When I was doing indoc. with United, we all had basic and advance tactical shooting classes in the hope that we will be able to arm aircraft. Probably won't happen but who knows.

There are currently airline pilots with guns... not very many of them but some of them.
And the ones that do have to go through all of the training that air marshals do.

HK's are awesome the only thing I have not been impressed with is replacement parts availability. HK has always been bad about stocking parts. All firearms need parts eventually I dont care who made it.

^^^ have you shot the regular MarkIII and the 22/45? Did they seem pretty different or pretty similar? i know the 22/45 is supposed to be modeled like a 1911.

Does anyone know eagle1's price for 1 yr membership? It would have to be better that pdhsc to persuade me since pdhsc is open 1 hr later than eagle1 on weekdays and weekends.

i mean like do you carry it around in public with the intent of whipping it out during the right circumstances? i'm just trying to wrap my head around why you would ever need it. i guess i've just got this image of a guy with a shoulder harness carrying a glock under his sport coat

which grip size did you try and where did they have one available?

i just purchased a 229 and it fits in my hand decently well and i don't have very large hands at all.

the hk p30 was the best fit wise, but unavailable in my caliber.

what do i need to keep the gun clean?

there are a multitude of products available to clean and lube my firearm. what is a recommended solvent and lube? hoppes no 9 solvent? remoil?

I guess it depends on what you mean by "the right circumstances." If you mean to save my life, then yes. If you mean to make someone piss their pants, then no.

A-Liquids:
1-all-purpose solvent (for general cleaning, Hoppes #9 is quite proven)
2-copper fouling remover (many solvents dont quite cut through copper fouling so its good to have a devoted one)
3-oil (both lubrication and preservation, remoil is fine)
4- gun scrubber (for serious cleaning/restoring, this stuff is pretty nasty use it outside)
5-Ammonia+Hot soapy water (for corrosive ammo if you use it)
6-Wood treatment (if you shoot firearms with wood stocks)


B- a good one-piece cleaning rod one for each caliber of firearm with:
1- Nylon bore brushes
2- regular Patch holder
3- If you clean from the muzzle end you'll need crown protectors (easist to just always clean from the breach end

C- cleaning patches (buy in bulk all sizes)
D- Toothpicks, Q-tips, wooden sticks for hard to reach spots.
E- Little buckets, big buckets and a nice box to hold it all together.
F- A stand, support to hold the gun, two hands are much better than one!

oh and one more thing: personal protection... disposable plastic gloves are essential, a mask for really toxis chemicals is good too... some people are really extreme and wear eye protection during cleaning too!

As you can see you don't need much, in my opinion people take gun cleaning way too overboard, you can actually do more harm then good by excessive cleaning! Just about any brand you pick will work... buy whats on sale!

At a bare minimum, this is my list:

-Cleaning rod, preferably one piece stainless steel, coated stainless steel, or composite.
-Caliber specific patch pusher
-Cleaner/copper solvent. My favorite is Hoppe's Benchrest copper solvent. It is like #9 but with copper solvent.
-Breakfree CLP for cleaning and lube.
-Old t-shirt for patches
-Q-tips

You can clean any pistol with the above.
If you need a brush to cut out some powder residue then you're probably not cleaning often enough.
Brass jags are nice to have for wetting down a bore, but a saturated patch will do the same.

You don't need much at all. I would say that people don't do damage by cleaning too much, they do damage by cleaning improperly.
You don't need to use a brass/bronze bore brush every time you clean. Using those every time will ruin a bore. Also using an aluminum rod can be bad because aluminum develops aluminum oxide over time (the same stuff sandpaper is made of).

That kit should work fine for pistols because you only need the part with the handle.
Brass isn't bad, just make sure you wipe it off after each pass like with all rods.

Most gun stores will have nice rods, I know PDHSC has the Pro-Shot rods.
Most places, including most Walmarts and K-marts have the Hoppe's Benchrest.

I'd skip the moly lube. It's much simpler to just use Breakfree CLP as a cleaner and a lube.
If you mix some cleaners with some oils then you could get a reaction that creats salts that can corrode or abrade.

New guns do come packed in a preservative grease or oil that sucks as a lube. More importantly you need to get any metal debris out of the gun before shooting.
To clean:
-field strip it (read owner's manual)
-run a solvent soaked patch through the bore of the barrel twice. set barrel aside.
-use an oil soaked patch to rub down all the internal surfaces of the slide, the frame rails, the outside of the barrel, the recoil guide rod, and the recoil spring. Q-tips come in handy to get into the slide and frame rails.
-wipe off excess lube
-run a dry patch through barrel, then another solvent soaked patch. Run another dry patch through the barrel. If the patch comes out clean then put more dry patches through til it's dry.
Put an oiled patch down the barrel and follow it with a dry patch. The idea is to leave a very light film of oil in the barrel.
-reassemble the gun
-lock the slide back, put a drop of oil on your finger, then use your finger to put the oil onto the outside of the barrel. Do the same with the front frame rails, rear slide rails, and the recoil rod. Let the slide go forward and put an itty bitty amount of oil on the hammer where it rubs against the slide.
-use a lightly oiled patch to wipe down the outside of the gun.
-take the mags apart and wipe them down (along with springs) with a lightly oiled patch to clean them. You don't need to oil mags, just leave a light layer of oil with the patch.

Your gun needs enough oil to work right and to avoid wear, but if you put on too much oil it can attract dirt, gum up the action, or even kill ammo primers.

I got a nice cleaning mat last year for Christmas...probably like 2' x 3' and some layered material that does a great job of absorbing all your oils and grease, etc...I think Remington makes it...good accessory for cleaning, depending on your setup, how much free space you have in your house, etc
